    Default Belly Dancing

In preparation for my new career as an Exotic Dancer , I am considering taking up Belly Dancing (in addition to my current regimen of Pilates and weight training). Question: would the slow style of this type of dance be beneficial to stage shows, lap dances, etc...? Or should I concentrate on a more "athletic" type of dance?

There was a site where Shakira talked about belly dancing. She took them for her videos, and great abs!
Do a google search, lots of good advice on belly dancing.
    Pamela.
Stage shows you have to adjust your body to the music being played. I love slow soft sexual, songs, so i move mainly with my hips and pole.
Damn, maybe i need the belly dancing too! Great idea!
PS i watch Shakira moves alot. I love how she can go slow and fast to the music playing. Shes a great motivator to me for belly moves.
A tip, always have something swinging on your hips, that what attracts eyes to your belly. Fringes or a long flowing belt type thing. LOng dangling bely piercing etc.

Belly dancing is good for learning to use your arms and move your hips and torso. Just remember that when you put the shoes on, everything changes.

I adapt a lot of bellydancing moves to my stage show (I've also taken ballet, modern, African, jazz... whatever was around to learn). I get complemented all the time on the way I dance and knowing the bellydancing moves when I first started dancing more than made up for my not knowing and pole tricks. In fact the hip and stomach isolations you learn can be adapted to some seductive floor work.

But yes, everything changes when you put on those heels. I'm lucky I had a dance studio type floor to practice on with the shoes before I ever auditioned.

Thanks for the advice Ladies!! I love Shakira! It was her MTV performance at one of the award shoes that's actually what got me thinking about taking up belly dancing in my quest to become a Stripper Extraordinaire Lena, once I find a good pair of shoes (I've been researching the websites recommended here), I will definately practice with heels once I get the moves down. Pamela, any suggestions on where to find excellent body jewelry and/or body art?

Wow! i seem to be in the belly button capital here. And body art as well. Any good tattoo shope will have any permenant or temporary tattoo's or belly button piercings that clip on, and no one knows. I used to wear them. Check out your local head and tattoo shopes!

    Hi Amethyst...
I just began Bellydancing and Tango. I think both of these to be ultra sensual. I was also inspired by Shakira's moves. I am finding bellydancing very difficult but do-able. I can tell it will have to be a long-term thing to get the results that i want. I am hoping to e in shape to audition in April. I recently ordered my shoes and am breathlessly awaiting their arrival....everyday! I plan on practicing everything that I learn in those shoes. Good luck with it all.

    Hi Nola,

Are you using a tape/dvd or are you actually in class for belly dancing? I was considering a tape by the Bidasha sisters. I thought of taking tango and salsa as well, but I think I better take it one at a time. I like to think I have excellent rhythmn (sp) but I was watching a preview of an instructional tape and was like "Damn - how do they do that???"

Good luck at your audition!! I'm auditioning in April as well (sooner if I can swing it).

About finding belly rings and fake tattoos, surprisingly enough your friendly neighborhood Sally Beauty Supply sells navel rings and fake tattoos. The thing is that the navel rings at Sally's don't cost more than $12. Compared to the $20 to $40+ that they typically cost everywhere else. They even have the extravagant ones that dangle and have moving parts. They also sell packs of replacement balls two to four in a pack for $5.50 in an assortment of sizes and colors. U know how u always have to go buy a new ring if u lose a ball and hope that the ball is the same size as the one u lost. Hope it helps.

    Hola' Ariel-

I'll probably start at PT's, although I have a tie for my first choice which is PT's vs Allstars. I was recently asked to come on stage at Allstars. The DJ was sweet, not pushy at all. He kept calling me Janet Jackson (right-I have about a year of abwork before mine look like hers, lol!) which was way cool considering I wasn't wearing anything spectacularly sexy (jeans, boots, shirt). I think PT's might be more my speed, as far as the clientel.

After work today (boring office job) I'm going to both and I plan on sitting with a few girls (paying them for their time of course) and learn more about each club. I also want to check out Sugar's and Wild Zebra again.

Man, and I thought I was the only one inspired by Shakira. I remember when she first came on the scene belly dancing. My mom was like "that Brittany Spears has got a run for her money in that girl" and she was right. Shakira makes it look so easy and sexy! Damn I wish I had some hips like her!

Bellydance is awesome for ab toning and can strengthen other muscles....some styles do actually use higher heeled shoes (4 inch+) in some turkish styles. Egyptian cabaret type styles occasionally do this too, but they just sort of stand and do a booty shake shimmy in the five inchers Have fun with it, it's a sensual dance, a celebration of woman, a celebration of birth and a hell of a lot of fun. It also ups the confidence factor for most who I've danced with (belly dance classes). I now use a sword in my b dance.....who knows, may take that on stage as a dancer/stripper in the future

Belly dancing is great lapdances and vip dances. Not to much for the stage though unless you are very used to the shoes by now. Good luck!

On the shoes....what height heel and type did everyone start at? Maybe I posted this in the wrong spot....but I'm using five inchers now, no platform (the pf's are being shipped). They work great and haven't killed my feet so far.

    tiana-
i prefer platforms with a chunky heel, they are much easier to balance on. I just bought some from snaz75.com, they have the best selection and prices.

    Hi Tiana [wave]

I bought my first shoes (6 inch stiletto, 2 inch platform) off of Ebay. The store is Attractive Wear and I'm very happy with them. Belly dancing isn't the easiest thing to do in these high heels, but it does look pretty sexy. I'm still practicing tho!!

    Go for it Amethyst
It's a hell of a lot of fun....still can't bring my sword on stage tho I'm workin on it.
Some of the crazy turkish and egyptian belly-dancers used spiked five to six inch regular heels back in the day.....I am so envious since they were also somehow incredibly graceful

    Hi everyone [wiggle] !!

It is so cool to see so many strippers into bellydancing!! I have been a professional bellydancer for years and years and I joined this site to get tips and ideas for my act!!

Tiana, a sword act would be so cool!! Men love their phallic symbols!! Sexy!!

Bellydancing is hard in high heels since the dance orginated from flat footed movements. I went to Egypt in 2000 and they did dance in very high heels- it was amazing!! I can in two inch high heels at best!!

Also besides dancing is traditional bellydance costumes, many came out wearing long form fitting, skin showing gowns and other outfits inspired by the west that I could see a stripper dancing in!!( One came out in a bike short/ bra ensemble with little veils hanging off of it) I guess Bellydancing there is the equivalent to go-go here in a way since women show very little skin at any time there!!

Many belly dancers dance in high heels.

I have been a bellydancer for years and I have to admit that it can help a lot with regard to performing, and costuming, balance, body toning etc. I want to start stripping so I am sure that it will help.

I have been bellydancing and a stripper for over 5 years. They started as unrelated interests, and have kind of remained that way, although there are parallels...

For the lady discussing a sword act, there are some weapons laws that may affect your ability to perform with a sword in public, check the local laws

Bellydancing is NOT hard in high heels with practice. I dance in heels, professionally for middle eastern and latin ballroom dances...and of course for stripping. Its kind of one of my local talents, not all bellydancers can really move well in 4 inch heels...I do not recommend that you user higher heels than that. They must be well-built, with straps all around....

Many bellydancers in the middle east do dress very provacativelly, and there are fashion parallels with exotic dance. Let's just say..I have two elegant long strip club evening gowns that double as bellydance dresses....

I do recommend any strippers interested in bellydance to take local classes...better than videos...I was also given a cheap harem girl costume and have implemented it really well into a stage show. It helps that some of the owners of my reg ??? club are of Middle Eastern background, so they LOVE it when I do a bellydance in a harem costume to authentic music..its my little gimmick..does anyone else do this....?
