    Default Hair Care Scare

Ok, so here's the thing. My hair is falling out. lol. I know it sounds terrible, but I have been perming it for years and just started to dye it and now it has taken a toll. What I plan to do is leave it braided until my natural new growth has grown long enough to have a fro...at which point I'll just twist it now and again to make it look curly. BUT is an afro good for business? All the other girls I work with have long hair--whether it's a weave, wig or processed. I don't want to have my hair braided forever :-/...but at the same time I feel like I won't get any money if I don't. Any suggestions? ???

Well first dancers have all types of hair! Thats good news. Second, if your hair is damaged to the point of falling out, i would not braid or twist it. You are putting much more strain on the hair shaft.

Instead why not buy a great relaxing cream, or molding gel made for damaged hair. There are alot of products that will look great on your hair after you wash it and it is still damp, put some on, you can lightly scrunch with your fingers, and have a sexy wet flatter look!

So many products today will leave you with hair that is wet, (the wet look) tamed down some, or tamed down alot! depends. An afro will do fine with these products. After you use a molding gel to tame the hair, spray on a sheen product.

Twisting and braiding will further help in the way of damage. What the hair needs is to rest at this point, and as it grows in, go for a slight trim now and again.

I would use a product for a sexy wet look, or molding gel! That would be hot to see, and take care of your hair.

PS Loreal has all products made for damaged hair. Afro hair is still the same as ours, it just does not lay naturally straight. NO heat, NO hairspray. Water and conditioner followed with a nice gel or molding, sculpting hold.

The damage will grow out in tme.

HI i would suggest that you stop putting relaxers in your hair maybe you would want to wait till you have some new growth before you think about braiding it ...i suggest you research .....go on google and research "nappy hair they have alot of sites where you can info from ...i dont see where there would be a problem with you working with an afro men love variety

skoolgal- When I transitioned about 2 years ago I learned two important things always condition your hair every day and never never never use products that contain alcohol.
I wore my hair in braids and found that while transitioning, they can be more harm than good. It's kinda like wearing heavy earrings all the time. Personally, I think afros are sexy worn by women, but if you don't feel comfortable at work like that maybe a wig or fall could be the answer.
I learned alot from this site www.naturallycurly.com

If you're worried about your income, there's a girl I work with who had very short hair and just started wearing wigs. She looks GREAT with long, black hair. Instead of short, blond hair. You could just wear a wig. What nationality are you, anyway?

I agree with the others that braiding your hair will probably just damage it more. Just moisturize it and take care of it as well as you can. As for your shampoo and conditioner, I think you should use the more expensive ones that are only sold at salon's and such, most really are superior. Paul Mitchell is my fave and his Instant Moisture line is great if your hair is too dry. I started using it a year ago and it has COMPLETELY transformed my hair!!

Since your hair falling out, it's best to just cut it all off. I mean that may seem like alot, but no point in holding on to damaged hair. Don't worry, I'm growing out a relaxer as well. Eventhough omittin relaxers from your haircare routine is for the best, if not done correctly, you could actually have more damage. Listen, I dont know how damaged you hair is, but it may be in your best interest to just cut it off. Go to the salon, get all the damaged ends clipped and then get a super rich deep conditioning treatment. Get this as well as protein treatments for like 2mos. Then your hair should be strong enough to subdue some microbraids. Those are very versitile. I hope that helps...Any more hair questions..PM me alright love...

Yes I would agree with cinnomon. I 've had this problem before and I had to cut the damaged part out. Gotta have the new healthy growth to grow out.

And I've washed and taken care of my hair ever since then. My natural hair is about shoulder length. I've always wore microbraids to work and didnt want to bother with it. I always put moisteiur in my hair to keep it from drying up and that way it'll make it healthy. I also would wash my hair with braids on.

And u said u put relaxer and dye in your hair? That's definelty not good because I had a friend who did the same. It damaged her hair so bad that she actually had to cut her shoulder length hair into about 2 or 3 inches long. I never ever dye my hair and afraid it would damage my hair however I must admit that I do use relaxer to straight out my hair after I take the braids out and have them redone.

I think an afro is hot! I work with a beautiful girl who wears an afro and she banks! If I had that type of hair I'd totally wear afro.

Talk about the story of my life! I have the afro hair from hell and I was ALWAYS braiding to avoid confronting it!

Well now it au naturale and my gorgeous boyfriend (aww bless!) bought me tubs of Hair Mayonnaise by Organic Root Stimulator to help me tame it. It's one heck of a deep conditoner I would definitely recommend it!! Use it as it advises and I'm sure your hair will love you for it! I am also using temple balm by the same company coz I had the trouble with some hair coming out due to tight braids.

I REALLY want a massive afro (think Erykah Badu) coz I know the other girls won't have one hence making me stand out in the crowd ($$Ker-ching$$!!).

you will find a lot of info- not stuff that a company tells you will work, but what real life women of color have tried, experimented with and passed on, complete with their progress photos. You need to go to people who understand black hair, what works for white and asian won't nessecarily work for black. My hair is in braids and it does NOt dmage the hair, as long as it is done properly. My natural hair at the moment is just past my shoulders, and I have not used a relaxer for probably 6 years ( I just press it when it's not braided). My hair was out of braids for the better part of this past year, and did 2 trims- prior to the first trim, my hair was to my bra strap, because it was in braids, and was not being manipulated on a daily basis.

The site is FULL of women with relaxed hair and are transitioning to natural (and the products and process they use to make it easier), or are just looking for better ways to take care of their relaxed hair.

Nice sites. Good advice. I always say hair is hair, and what her hair seems to need more than anything is lots of moisture at this time. She has extrememly damaged hair, and any stress on the shaft of hair that bad "probably" would only help the slit ends to run up the shaft. I think with hair like hers, it's best to keep in the natural state, but after washing add an humectant to seal in moisture, and a molding gel to make the hair lie down more.

Short of cutting all the hair off, it probably needs to start with a good trim and then the more she leaves it alone the better the hair that is damaged will be able to hang on until she gets a good length. PS remember we were giving advice to someone who has extremely damaged hair already.

    Good luck,
    Pamela

i've been au natural for about eight years....love it....tried a texturizer a few months ago....hated it....

this past weekend i was able to get all of the texturizer cut out of my hair and i couldn't be happier...now the only chemical i have in my hair is color (and if i didn't have the gray...i wouldn't even do that)....i went back to my natural hair color (which is close to black) and i've gotten more complements on it than with any of the other colors i've tried....my hair is a short 'fro and i love it...try olive oil as a hot oil treatment for awhile (before washing AND deep conditioning) 'cause it will help you get your hair back healthy.

i had bad breakage and a receding hairline before going natural....had it cut short at first....then had all the relaxer cut out a couple of weeks later....my hairline has grown back and my hair is in much better shape....even with the color in it...

can't speak on how a 'fro would affect your income...i'm not a dancer....but be prepared for a mixed reaction from people....some (if not most) black folks can be very unkind to a sister who decides to go natural....but you may inspire others to do the same...who knows...people who knew me back when my hair was longer wish i would grow it back out and 're-fry' it but the people that never saw my hair long or straight like it....

    good luck

Like I said girl, just restart it all over! That is damn near the only thing you can do. Go to a stylist..someone who knows about african american haircare ( and not some kitchen beautician) and have a consultation. It will be alot more easier for them to assess your condition since we dont even know what your hair looks like. In that consultation, they should tell you what conditions and shampoos to start using. It actually wouldnt' hurt you to start visiting a hairstylist so that they can take care of your hair.

STOP GOING TO YA COUSIN AND NEM' lol...sorry I had to let that one out! I mean it just urks me when people do this and they wonder why their hair falls out. Now, I'm not saying that this was the case with you, but hopefully a hairstylist isnt' putting you through this turmoil. I hope you really follow this advice. Also pick up a Sophisticates Black Hair Magazine ( my fave) or a Natural Styles type hair book. They both will have ideas on how to style your hair and Q &A sections.
