    Default Kitchen Beaty Treatments

Hey Ya'll!!!!! Pamela's suggestion about oiling dry hair with olive oil made me think of this. By the way, My icky dry hair is silky smooth now...Thanx Pamela!!!!! Does any one have any beauty treatments you use at home with ingredients from your kitchen? I used to use oatmeal as a facial scrub. It pulled out all the nasty stuff and left my skin soft and clean. I heard something about mayo on your hair for moisturizing as well. Some thing about the vinegar in it is supposed to make it shine. I would think youd smell like a sandwich though, even after shampooing!!!!!!

Important to note that some will have contact allergies to common food items as well - do your patch test. I once whipped up an egg-based face mask and ended up with itchy red blotches all over my face - it wasn't pretty! Although I can eat an egg, it irritates my skin like crazy.

I like to scrub my face and body with granulated sugar. I've noticed recently that 'sugar scrubs' seem to be popular in the drugstore beauty aisle. I learned the trick from a Heloise column when I was a mere pre-teen.

    Ooh, my favourite subject!

Ok, Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the best moisturizer, make up remover, and even stubborn eye makeup remover. Jojoba oil is good for oily skin, as it imitates our skin's sebum and normalizes oil production. Plain yogurt makes a good mask. It's also good to wash your face in the am with milk (lactic acid). I make my own scrubs with brown sugar, kosher salt, cornmeal and sometimas poppies. I add either olive oil or grapeseed oil, and any essential oil for scent. Honey has a great anti inflammatory properties and is a humectant, so it's also a very nice moisturizing mask. There's a website - either tatanova.com, or womannova.com - that has tons of all natural ancient beauty recipes.

Hey Michele I totally forgot all about that beer shampoo! I used to use that all the time. I was young and thought the idea of beer shampoo was soo cool! I know, I'm a nerd [wave]. I also love love the sugar scrubs. I like to buy mine at TJ Max. They have some of the best sugar scrubs you could get in a pricey store for 3-5 bucks. I've also heard numerous times about the mayo in the hair but I could never bring myself to do that. Eww.

Tomato mask gives skin a very refined texture. Strawberries do as well. Cooked and mashed carrot (vit. A) is a lovely alternative to Retin A. Egg white is firming and tightening, while egg yolk, especially with avocado and olive oil is incredible for hair. Lemon brightens nails, plus, when diluted is an effective astrigent for skin. Banana is also firming. A mix of sea salt, epsom salt, baking soda and lavender oil in a pretty glass jar with seashell for a scooper - and I have nice bath salts. Chamomile rinse brightens blond hair while Rosemary is great for dark. Cucumbers and teabags really do work for puffy eyes. And oh yea, I used to use vinegar and cold water as a final rinse for my hair. Made it very shiny. Coconut, carrot, sweet almond, and avocado oils are also great for hair. Here's another face mask: farmer's cheese, plain yogurt, egg yolk (if you're not allergic, naturally). Buffered vit. C powder is my fave. thing right now. Running an ice cube over your face boosts circulation and tightens. Papaya (papain) and pineapple (bromelain) have enzymes that are wonderful for skin. Coffee grounds rubbed on certain areas are said to reduce cellulite (well, considering caffeine is usually one of the active ingredients in firming creams).

In short, I should've gone ahead and rented that tiny studio apartment where bathroom and kitchen were really one and the same, lol!

Forgot to add aspirin mask for declogging pores and smoothing skin, and buttermilk powder (or just powdered milk) for making paste with water and washing face. Vitamin E or Primrose oils are good for undereyes. I read about Camellia and Rice Bran oils, but haven't tried them yet.

By the way, I've been using everything I've listed for years (+ sunscreen), and get tons of compliments on my skin and hair. I never even wear foundation, and need very minimal concealer.

    Hi,

One important reminder when we use kitchen products, they can irritate or even give a very serious allergic reaction.

The best and closest we can come to getting brighter softer skin on our bodies and face is whole vitamin D milk.

Goats milk is great! Cleopatra took baths in milk. She was known for her beautiful skin!

Cold milk soaked cotton balls does wonders for puffy eyes. Milk on the skin for 15 minutes is a very close shot to the vitamin A products bought over the counter!

Milk slightly bleaches the skin too!

Remember these (alot mentioned) make us feel great, but do no permanant job to our skin. As they can not penetrate.

A cucumber does have properties to help de-puff eyes. But so does ice. Chemical or not.

Yogurt also does the same as milk. It's a great skin softner and help the top layer slough off faster. But must be used alot.

Our hair is different, it's dead. So we don't have to worry about reactions. But the skin is a touchy subject.

Just be careful with what you chose, and try a small patch test on the face first.

As egg whites will tighten the skin, and leave you with skin that stretched over time! really.

Ice cubes, can break small capillaries on our faces, leaving us with small red streaks in spots.

Home products are great! but we must read about them first, they can be very strong on our skin, and we may react.

Honey was another good skin softner. I break out in hives after i use it. You need a patch test first.

The one most loved is cold whole milk! It does many wonders! and i have yet to hear of a reaction. But it can happen. And does.

PS anything cold will de-puff. Anything hot will help loosen dead skin. Sooo many uses for anythig in our kitchens, but some foods really dont belong on our skin, they work in our bodies better.

Carrots are staining, and do nothig on top of our skin. It's not the same vitamin a we need for cell turn over. Eat too many carrots, you turn orange!!!

    Good luck,
    Pamea

Pamela, if I wanted to take a milk bath, how much milk should I use? A gallon? Finally, a way to use up milk before it spoils!

And to add to the lemon comment, lemons work well for bleaching ashy elbows.

Yes lemons bleach fingernails too! 1 gallon of milk poured in a warm bath tub half filled. But you should soak for at leat 15 minutes. This is not a quick fix. We have lotions that do great jobs today. It's just a natural approach. I take milk baths with very little water. It feels good. Sour milk will not hurt the skin, just stinks.

Careful around the vagina, i have never had a problem, but milk contains alot of sugar, believe it or not.

I have been using milk on my skin for years. Could be why i am very white besides being scandanavian. Lol

Cash, come on over any time!

For anyone interested there's a website www.makeyourowncosmetics.com, that has a lot of recipes and info.

I only posted what has seriously worked for me. I know someone else may be allergic, or not see the same results, as overall lifestyle, genetics, etc play a part (so get that sleep, water and fresh air!). The most you can do for your skin is to exfoliate, moisturize, and protect from the sun and pollution. And it does make a difference. You can do it in many different ways, but if you know how it all works, you'll know how to simplify it. All the stuff we buy from cosmetic counters and drugstores - what are we paying for, really? Packaging, adverisement, and a lot of useless ingredients, while the ingredients that could make a difference are used in miniscule amounts or are totally ineffective. Well, I read the ingredients, as well as books on what means what, so I just cut to the chase and make my own stuff, using most only performance ingredients. Like, buy some rosewater, a bottle of glycerin, a bottle of hyaluronic acid (both are wonderful humectants), add some aloe vera if you wish (which is a nice mattifier for oily skin, btw), or jojoba or olive oil, and you have a great moisturizer. Honey is also a natural preservative, fyi.

Personally, I got into all, or nearly all natural skin care because stuff I was buying from stores was either making zero difference or giving me reactions. Besides, I'm a hippy at heart and wish I lived someplace alone, in the woods, collecting herbs, like a witchdoctor, or something, lol.

But, I respect other people's opinions, so... To each his own. Just had to share. Sometime I'll post my pic.

I just read some of you use sugar to exfoliate!

How do you make up an exfoliating mixture with sugar? Can you use it on your face or is it strictly for body?

I also really need to firm up my skin for a new club opening (I'm travelling to do this so I want to make sure I look delicious!) are there any quick fixes??

Sugar is a good exfoliate. Use it with a light hand or your skin may become blotchy for a few hours, and sore.

I used to use it. I mixed it with safflower oil. I used it with the oil warm , and when in a hurry just mixed a small amount of sugar in my hand with the oil poured over it.

Then lightly i would smear it all over my face in an upward direction. Stay away from the eye skin. Too delicate.

then i would rinse with cld water. A scrub feels very good, but some people seem to over do it, thinking more scrubbing off of dead skin is better. But it will only leave you with skin that is irritated and blotchy looking until it heals.

    Good luck,
    Pamela

    Hi Malibu,

I use a mix of brown sugar, kosher (or medium coarse sea salt) and cornmeal on my body. I put it in a jar and make a paste with either grapeseed oil (the lightest oil) in the summer, or extra virgin olive oil in the winter. It makes a perfect scrub. You can even skip salt, and/or sugar. Cornmeal will do the job. Rinse the whole thing (the remains of the oil will seal the moisture nicely), and use a shimmery lotion or body oil. You'll be sooo soft and glow!

On the face I prefer cornmeal (it's perfectly sized, rounded and not scratchy) mixed with creamy cleanser (I love A-D-E Earth Science cleanser from Health Food Store, or Neutrogena creamy one). For some reason I didn't like sugar on the face (and white sugar felt too rough, as edges of the granules are uneven).

BTW, even if your skin is oily, avoid too foamy cleansers, as foam means detergents, and while it strips oil from your face it forces skin to produce more oil. Or, at least use one free of sulfates.

About firming up, not sure. You mean cellulite? Herbal body wraps and mud wraps (mud masks for the face promise to draw impurities and tighten, too) supposed to give temporary tightening effect, and if you combine it with exersize and a low fat diet, free of processed foods and sugar, and drink lots of water, there will be a difference!

    Blu.

I just use white granulated sugar. I pour a bunch (about a cup or more for full body) into a plastic container to take into the shower. Mixing it with olive oil is nice but I don't always do that. Sometimes I just lather up with cleanser, pour some sugar into my hand and start from the top and work my way down. I use it on my face and neck as well. I use just my hands to scrub with, I found using a washcloth with the sugar to be too harsh. There's no need to scrub scrub scrub like crazy. A light touch works wonders.

I figured since it's sugar maybe there are also some alpha hydroxy acid exfoliation going on as well.

How do I make an aspirin mask? I have a big bottle of excedrin I got at costco and I'm bored. I would like to try one now. Maybe I'll just wing it.

    Hi, Pamela

I'm not Sapphire, but I use aspirin mask for declogging pores (although ever since starting to wash with vit C powder and moisturizing with olive oil I haven't seen any cloggs, or noticeable pores for that matter). It contains salycilic acid (aka Beta Hydroxy) that does the job, exfoliating within the pore. It's also good if you have ingrown hair. I take a few tablets, dissolve it in my hand with warm water, make a not too runny paste and smear it over clean, damp face. Leave it for 5 minutes, and then gently rub it off and wash. It's also nice and scrubby. I get a bottle of aspirin from Walmart for 97 cents. It's also got the best formulation as there're only a few other ingredients. Bayer's aspirin, I hear, is good, too. I have a bottle of Beta Hydroxy solution and it's really no better.

    HTH.

yes, I had read towards the top of this thread about an aspirin mask. Goody, I'm glad to hear I should dissolve them with water in my hand because I felt like some drug addict crushing them up in the kitchen last night!

    Yes phillydncr,
it's under "horrible dry skin" thread. I LOVE vaseline! It does do wonders. But those prone to breakouts need to exfoiiate after rinsing.

I put it on my lashes alone. My elbows, feet with socks. Now that winter is coming it's in demand!
