    Default Instead Cup?

    hey everyone...
    i was just curious...
i'm dancing for the first night with my Aunt Flow...ugh...
and before i started dancing i used the instead cup (http://www.softcup.com ... in case you don't know what i mean...)
    when i had my period...
i don't like the idea of chopping off the tampon strings...
but i guess i'll try it for tonight...
so im curious does anyone else use these while you're working? let me know... thanks ;)

    Heidi!

No! Don't do it! They leak-specially of you aren't used to putting them in, or you contract your muscles a lot. You are a dancer, so muscles are the name of the game. And when you leak, it's a lot. Bite the bullet and tuck the string.

I've used these while dancing and have been fine, no leaks. But I usually have a reasonably light flow.

Why don't you want to cut the string? It's not going to get lost in you, trust me.

I don't understand how cutting the string works, how do you get it out?

If you cut it you still leave a little bit of string so you can pull it out,I have tucked it in many a time to find it hanging out, just cut the string.

Heidi- you may be better off using a tampon and cut/tuck the string. I used Instead a few year ago, all the time, even during regular day activities. I stopped using them after I noticed two things; change in smell AND it can fall out if you run! (What if it fell out during a dance?)
Also, less mess to change a little whitey...

Ok, if you're a topless dancer, you can tuck the string between your lips and be ok. If you're dancing nude, you can either cut it off or tuck it all the way in. I am usually a tucker. Here's how it works (Oh boy, I feel sorry for the guys that read this thread): if using a tampon with an applicator, cut off the string and put the tampon back in the applicator to insert. If using a tampon without an applicator, flare it out like you're supposed to, then clip the string (or wrap it up in the center before you insert it).

By the way, I have heard that some of the synthetic fibers in tampons can be a health risk so I recommend using 100% cotton tampons that you can usually find in the health food store. Tampax used to make Tampax Naturals but I don't think they're still on the market.

My sister, who's a bit of a nature gal, uses sea sponges which are reuseable. She swears by them.

The only problem i had with the cup is taking it out, easy enough, but messy. As for the tampon, i always cut the string. And lube my fingers up with K-Y for easy insert of my fingers, squat and take it out. You can't lose it inside you. The tampon only goes so far up.

However, make sure you take the old one out before inserting the next one, without a string it's easy to forget. A few ladies have done this, only to have a freind help them remove both.

I like tampax gentle glide. I only wear it for a few hours, then replace. I works fine for me.

:o God, where have I been? I've never heard of the instead cup. Maybe I should try it when I'm not dancing. Although the cup looks so big in the picture! It kinda intimidated me! :-/ I've also forgotten that I already had one in since I also cut the string. Having your boyfriend pull out 2 at the end of the night when you exhausted is no Party!!

i opted to tuck the string...
    thanks for the advice...
i do still use the cup for non-stripping activities...
i like it because i can keep it in longer...
you can have sex with it in... and less risk of TSS...
collettecall, i have heard of the sea sponge wonders in the book CUNT and in my women's studies classes...
did you ever try it? just curious... i'll try anything once...

    although i still use tampons...
i was SO intimidated by them at first...
i found them at target and decided to give it a go...
they look big but are very flexy... and if they are in right are just as comfy as tampons...

You can have sex with it in??? I'd love to be able to have time-of-the-month sex without making a mess!!
How does it work and what keeps it from going way up there--where your fingers can't reach? I know the vagina is not that deep, but sometimes I have trouble getting out tampons after the string has been cut. Seems like cup would go much deeper than a tampon. ???

I hate the cup but I only hate it cause I can't really use it. It was just too damn precarious to put in and take out. Because I do the constant method of birth control with just a few periods a year I don't really need it. I follow the constant method b/c my periods were too heavy to deal with regularly and the cup is not ideal for those with heavy constant flows like me.
However, it is great for people who have the patience and will power to deal with them. They are easy to use and all, just not for me. The cup is inserted sideway while squeezing it together gently and you push until you reach your cervix and slide it over your cervix similar to the way you use a cervical cap. If you've never used a cervical cap this sounds like spanish to you. The instructions are easy to follow and it only takes a minute. Its one of the best damn things for period sex with squeamish guys too.

I tried the cup for the first time with my last period. I found it ackward, but I'm sure I felt the same way about tampons the first several times I used them (I just don't remember). The cups are really big though and somewhat intimidating.
As for tampons...I recommend OB without the applicator. The string is already wrapped up. Put the tampon in... the string stays where it is...when you're ready for it to come out, use a fingernail to catch the string and pull.

yeah i use the o.b. applicator-less tampons too...
i alternate between them and the instead cup...
once you get the hang of the cup it's ok...
it does seem huge... but i would imagine it's not much different from using a diaphram... i dunno i never used one...
they are good for period sex... but are NOT contraceptives!!!

I can't get the Instead cup in right. My cervix is slanted. Does that matter? I am a string cutter and I also have a preference for OB, Playtex, or Kotex. Tampax and generic similarities expand lengthwise and can end up poking out. Yikes.

    Default Ick!

I gave the cup several tries, not just in one period, but over the course of 3-4 of them, and hated it! I had a hard time getting it in, a horrible time getting it out, since it collects the blood rather than absorb it, the blood spills all over your fingers when you are digging it out, and it smells in that first instant of removal, the guy I was seeing at the time could feel it in me when we had sex (he didn't know I was using it until afterwards he mentioned he felt something and I told him what it was- eep!) I hated it! I'll take the tried and true tampon any day! As for sex, my fiance now has no problem with some slippery fun, and what a dear- HE'S the one who washes the sheets afterwards!
Another thing about the cup, I never felt at ease with it in, just knowing that thing was in there made me feel creepy.

OMG!! They can really fall out? I would actually quit if something like that happened on stage... but I actually just cut the string, but you imagine?!
