I know this one is a killer.
I arch my back, and use my hands and feet (really more toe action) when crawling on stage. Be light, kinda like walking light, and this takes practice.
Another trick used often, when i know i am doing a long song and doing a stage show for a regular, i wear boots that are above my knees. They work wonders, are sexy and take the brunt of your weight. Insert some small padding in the knee area. Any leather shoe shop can do this for cheap. And know one knows you have small pads inserted inside!
Other than that My kness got tough, starting out it sucks.
I never took supplements, because i never thought about it. But boots for floor work are heaven, and lerning to be lighter on your knees and let your hands and feet/toes help you.
It worked for me, but took a little time with no boots.

I am wearing knee protectors for most of my acts these days as I too execute moves that leave my knees vulnerable - it has made a huge difference to remaining injury free and being able to make the moves look more dramatic as they are done confidently now. Maybe you could buy smaller more feminine looking ones that could match your gear and take it off at the end?

Has anyone taken glucosamine and chrondoitin supplements? Can this help? My knee pain is in the muscles and joint (as opposed to bruising or skin problems). I started taking osteo bi flex and I think it is helping, but I don't know if my knees are just toughening up, getting used to it, getting stronger.

Advice from a non-dancer: don't crawl during your routine, try some other sexy movement to compensate and make the guys want to watch and enjoy. Yes, those supplements apparently work, I've heard.

Boots are a godsend when you are feeling sore they protect your knees and best of all you can wear socks in them so your feet recover too

Anais, yes, the supplements work. I wasn't taking Osteo Bi Flex tho. I was taking another glucosamine and chondrotin supplement. It is a miracle. A couple months after I started dancing my knees started to hurt. Usually that first set on stage was difficult. Before I knew it, private dances were agony for me because after doing one I could put no weight on one of my knees. I would have to limp back to the dressing room and sit for awhile before I could go resume work. My knees were so bad that I could not squat down in the grocery store with out being near tears and holding on to the shelf for dear life to try to get back up. That is when I realized that I had to do something. I have small children and have to be able to keep up with them. I had to fix it or quit dancing. I went to a chiropractor and didin't see any relief. Then a friend that does ballet told me about this stuff and gave me the rest of her bottle to prove it to me. The stuff is amazing and I went and got my own bottle. That was 4 years ago. I don't have any trouble now. Anyway, after my rambling, the bottom line is that I would recomend a glucosamine and chondrotin supplement to anyone having pain. It won't hurt to try it and see. I have faith that it will help you! I should get paid for this!

Question about the supplements? Does anyone know of a brand that doesn't contain "sulfate". All of the glucosamine I've seen is glucosamine sulfate, and I can't take anything with the sulfate. If anyone knows of a brand without it, and where you find it, would be much appreciated.

The one I used doesn't have glucosamine sulfate, but it does have chondrotin sulfate. Sorry that I couldn't be of help.

Glucosamine has not been endorsed by the AMJ. That means that none of their claims are scientificly substantiated. While it may help relieve pain I haven't heard any doctor recommend it for bruising.
If your situation is that bad and boots with padding won't work, then I'd suggest you revise your routine. Continually injuring your knees is simply courting more problems down the line.

i do a lot of floor work. mostly because im lazy. been dancing so long ive found acrobatics are just a waste of energy. take glucosamine. lots of it it works amazing. i take 3 in morning and 3 in evening there are no dangers and it takes about three weeks for it to build up before you notice results. it makes a huge difference. also when i was a feature my partner and i ALWAYS wore thigh high boots so that we could wear knee pads under them.

    USE ARNICA!!!
It's the BEST pain relief you can get your hands on. If you use it in combination with glucosamine sulphate then you're sorted. Your knees will love you and serve you well for a long time to come!
