    Default Does anyone get migraines?

I think I've gotten my first migraine. I've done some searching on the Internet and came to this conclusion.

It started Monday morning when I woke up. I felt horrible, so I checked up on SW, then went back to sleep hoping I'd feel better. I don't. I've had this headache (it's more than a headache) for 4 days now and I can't do anything. I'm miserable. All I've been doing is sleeping, watching TV, and getting on the computer when I can handle that. Right now it's painful, but I can still function (barely). When I stand up, bend down, sneeze, walk up the stairs, blow my nose, walk (basically any small physical movement) I am paralyzed! My brain is pulsating and I feel like something up there is going to burst. I literally can't move and have to stand there waiting for it to subside, hoping I don't pass out. This has been happening since Monday, all throughout the day. I can't sleep well. I am very sensitive to light and sound. My neck aches, my whole body aches. It's hard to think straight and sometimes I have to stop talking mid-sentence because it hurts to talk.

I read that migraines are genetic, and I know my mom and sister has had them. They threw up though. That's why I didn't think it was that at first, I haven't been puking. I have a very strong stomach though and have puked twice in the last 10 years. Although, I did feel a bit nauseous today. I found that you can have migraines without puking. I also read that they can last 4 days. This is the scary part, a couple peoples story I read said that they have lasted for months. One is a 25 year old female, she got her first one last April and it hasn't stopped. I don't want that to be me! I'm so scared. I can't work like this and I have to go to work this weekend to make ends meet. I don't have ins. and can't afford to see a Dr. right now. I'm not looking for pity, just advice. Please help!

I used to get migraines a lot. My biggest recommendation is to find the quietest room in your apartment/house and make it as dark as you can and just sleep.

As for meds, try Tylenol with codeine or ask a pharmacist for other over the counter remedies.

Oh yes i get migraines. I usually get them a few days before my period, or right after my period goes away. I have been to the doctor for them a couple years back. He said "oh it's called a cluster headache." (bad too.) But i forgot to tell him i was getting them only before the period or right after. Then for my Pap i told my doctor. He said very common amoung some women, drop in hormones, yada yada.

But there are all kinds of migraines, (symptoms) wth me, light bothers my eyes. I need dark, quiet, i feel like i may vomit at times, and try to sleep it off.

When i feel it starting to hit, (it's usually on one side of my head so i know it's a migraine,) i grab two Advil quickly, and lay down for a while. Sometimes i don't need to lay down, just move slowly, and it will go away.

I can't take Migraine Meds. Because they contain fairly high levels of caffeine, and with my Tachycardia, my heart races VERY fast.

Advil does well for my migraines. I think the key is to catch it as soon as you feel it coming on.

Also certain foods bring on a migraine as our bodies change.

    Good luck,
    Pamela

Advil does well for my migraines. I think the key is to catch it as soon as you feel it coming on.

Me too, I had headaches for years, and had the same stuff, light would just cut through my eyes right into my brain it felt like and thought I would vomit etc etc...

Amazingly since I started doing more exercise especially neck and shoulder exercises that helped a lot. Also since I have been on meds for depression I have not had any headaches at all. Interesting huh?

Be careful with advil. I also have a rare form of arthritis which is through out my whole system, not just in one joint or whatever. Before I went to a Doc for it I was taking so much Advil that I almost gave myself an ulcer, just what you need to go along with arthritis and headaches huh?

Here is a short term help that I did that might help at least a tiny bit. Cures nothing but helps with the pain for short periods of time. take a towel and wet it thoroughly then wring out the water. Now put it in your microwave for about 30-45 seconds. BE CAREFUL it is HOT. Now take it and as hot as you can handle it and stand it lay it across your eyes and forehead and sit down and try to relax.

Like I said it cures nothing but it helped a bit with the pain. I used to heat and reheat it and do it over and over for as long as I could stand.

    Good luck Kobi,

Anybody ever go through this with headaches?

I have the headache for a long time, hours maybe days. Then I will feel myself starting to yawn a lot, and the more I yawn it is like I can feel it going away. Not that the yawning made it go away but is somehow connected?

Or how about this. You have a splitting headache and for years have done EVERYTHING to try and get rid of them. Then some idiot who never gets headaches is trying to help and says, "Did you take an ASPIRIN?"

You want to f*cking scream at them, right! "No, I am so freaking dumb it never occured to me to take a freaking aspirin!" You have the urge to just push them off a cliff, know what I mean?

Thanks for the advice xmarx! I only take an advil when needed, probably once every 3 months. Sometimes i can crawl in bed and sleep it off in an hour. My trick is knowing it's coming!

Yea Ibruprofen as acetametaphine have (can) some serious side affects if taken in large amounts at once, or taken on a regular basis. By regular i mean tylenol daily and advil.

Asprin is good! And good for ya! But not as strong. Now i am taking an asprin a day with calcium in it! It's new!

PS lets see if this keeps the headache away.

Also xmarx...what i was told about a yawn. It's actually a small amount of oxygen that you are getting to your brain. OK, some doc. told me this. But could not explain why they are "catchy."

I believe this, i will yawn when i a tired, hell my brain does want to sleep. And upon waking up too, i feel i need to get a few deep breaths. The yawns go away!

Just what i was told. And what hapens to me at times. Also i can think about a yawn, and yawn! I can hear someone yawn and yawn! Seeing them really does it.

My mom and I both get very bad migraines and like you said Kobi her's will last months at a time, mine only for a couple days if that. My dad also gets them, his were so bad that the DR gave him a shot that he's supposed to inject himself with in the temple if it's bad enough. My DR put both me and my mom on Frova and we both haven't had a migraine since.

As far as I know Ibuprofen doesn't have any acetaminophen in it. I have bad liver problems and I can't take anything with acetaminophen in, most pain relievers will make me sick if I take them. Aspirin and Ibuprofen are the only thing I can take if I absolutely have to.

Your right Shayden Tylenol has acetametaphine, and Advil has Ibuprofen, which is also a slight antiinflammatory. NSAID drug.

I've been getting migraines since I was 3 years old - not fun. Seems like they are most often triggered by low blood sugar, I can often feel them coming and ward them off by getting sugar in my system pronto, followed by a more substantial snack to avoid the next blood sugar drop. Once one has hit, only lots of codeine does the trick - if I'm lucky.

Kobe, I am worried about the neck/body ache symptoms. I have never experienced that from a migraine, and I don't think it's typical. That combined with the fact that you have never suffered from migraines before is suspicious. Is there anyway you can manage to see a doctor? I'm concerned because your symptoms seem similar to those of meningitis, which can be fatal. If you are experiencing stiffness in your neck as well, I would get to a doctor asap. I don't mean to scare you but there have been meningitis outbreaks recently, and living/working in Vegas, with so many travellers going through the city, you never know.
I hope you are feeling better soon!

I highly agree with Ara, get a checkup. You should get a CT. They will look at your brain. Also Not to scare you again, but something coming on all of a sudden for the first time, and being so sick feeling all over, can be many serious symptoms. Also aneurysm has the symptoms.

Please remember too migraines can start at any age.

    Get better,

Thanks for the advice everybody. I took some Advil Migraine today. It seems to have helped my head a little bit, but now I am even more nauseous and my stomach hurts. I knew Ibuprofen always does that to me, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway.

My neck and body might be sore from lack of activity. I've been on the couch or in this chair for 5 days now.

I'm going to try to see the Dr. that Francesca mentioned and see what he has to say.

Pamela, I forgot to mention that I just ended my period 2 days before it started.

    Again, thank you guys!

Migraines run in my family (both sides) and I get them a few times every month. My mom, dad, sister, and aunt have all been put on Imitrax (sp?) and love it. However, my biggest complaint when I get migraines is the nausea (makes it impossible to even take an asprine). The pills that really work for me are Promethazine 25 mg. They're actually anti-emetics but they work so well for my headaches. I pop one, it makes my stomach feel better, then it knocks me out for about 4 hours, I usually then wake up feeling better and hungry. The sleep really helps but since they make me so drowsy I'll only take one if I really need it.

There are other options for those with severe nausea - I know that Imitrex is available in an injectable as well as the tablets, as well some pain meds are available in a rectal suppository form. I know it sounds gross, but they really do work. I was prescribed Voltaren suppositories after my surgery, and while I was totally squeamish about the whole process, I soon got over it because they worked so well, and the relief lasts for a good 7-8 hours. I may try one of those next time I get a headache.

I get three different kinds of headaches, the first will subside if I take Advil, etc... and find a dark quiet place for an hour or so. The second type will go away very quickly after a good strong cup of coffee. The third just has to run its course.

Ahhh... i have been getting migraines for years now... my mother and my grandmother both get them so they are hereditary... i have tried EVERTHING... medications will work for awhile and then stop working :( it sucks...
i am highly allergic to codeine so that doesn't really help me too much... i take imitrex injections... they help if i catch it at the onset of the migraine... does anyone else get migraine "auras" when you have like visual disturbances and tingliness and can feel them coming on?

Thanks everyone for your advice and concern. My migraine is totally gone now. I'm so happy! It started escaping after I took that Advil Migraine. It was totally gone by Saturday.

This is rather amusing, because I was actually going to start a post on migrains today until I saw this one. I have suffered from migrains since I can remember. I usually end up taking three Excederine Migrain tablets...get a hot rag...go into a dark room....turn on a fan to listen to the noise..put the rag on my eyes..and massage the temple of the side of my head that is in pain (almost always the right). I have just recently tried lavender drops..If works o.k. but if it is a really bad one, I just find the smell nausiating.

Kobi, glad you are feeling better and that it wasn't anything more serious.

Heidi, I have experienced the "migraine aura", was kind of freaky the first time it happened because I didn't know what it was. I actually wish that I would get them before all my migraines because then I would be able to catch them before they get bad. I'm also really bad about remembering to carry meds with me just in case though, so often I'm screwed when I feel one coming on

Jillian - peppermint oil helps too - you can apply it directly to the area that is painful and it warms the area as well. There is an aromatherapy chain here that markets a headache relief product and it is basically peppermint and lavender oils & vitamin E. Pure peppermint oil might be too strong for your skin, you can dilute it using jojoba oil or even olive oil.

Yikes.. Migraines! I know them all too well. They were so severe a while back that I needed medication for them. All I can really do when I get one of those dreaded headaches, is go into my bedroom, ALL the lights out, curtains closed, totally pitch dark. It doesn't make the migraine go away, but it eases the pain a bit for me. Luckily I haven't had one in quite some time, but when I do get them, I can't have ANY noise what-so-ever around me. The hubby can whisper, and it sounds like shouting to my ears. I don't wish them on anyone.

I've always heard about how painful migraines were, but I never knew what they felt like. From reading the posts that you ladies have made today, I've come to the conclusion that these "headaches" I've been having the past few days are actually migraines.

They were so painful that I had this "headache" for 2 days straight! I even felt the pain and pressure while I slept, it just never left me. I tried taking different over the counters but to no avail. nothing has worked for me.

I find myself dizzy, or light headed at times. Sometime the headache will go away for a while, only to come back with a strong, sharp instant pain. I know that I need to go to the doctor, but I have no insurance. Hopefully I can get my hands on some Excedrin and see how that helps me.

I get migraines all the time..the only thing that works as far as over the counter stuff is Exedrin Migraine...since you have been having it for so long...you need to put a heating pad on the back of your neck sit in a dark room and loosen up the muscles in your neck...after you are loosened up...crack your neck and back and the migraine will subside...if you can get to a chiropractor get and adjustment...my mom's nurse told me to do that when I had a migraine for a week and it worked...
