    Default I'm sorry, I don't smoke

I quit smoking cigarettes last night. I think my addiction is primarily psychological, not physical. I was able to quit cold turkey for pregnancy. Why am I finding it difficult to quit otherwise? Arghhhhhhh, I'm going to eat everything in the pantry!

Good for you! I think cold turkey is the best way. I quit the day before my 21st birthday. It was weird, I wasn't even planning on quitting. I was having a drunken pool party for my B-day, looked at the cigarette I was smoking and said "This is my last cigarette." I think it was an epiphany. At a party six months later, I was drunk and had a cigarette and it made me really sick. That was my last cigarette. Now I hate the habit. I think it is disgusting, selfish, and unattractive. I hate being around cigarette smoke. When I quit I had just started working out, so that was a good habit that took my mind off smoking. Cardio was also a lot easier! The hardest part was not lighting up as soon as I got in the car or after a meal. I also missed the action of doing something with my hands. Good luck girl! I know you can do it.

I swear I had an epiphany too last night. It was my last cig and I just decided it was REALLY my last cig. They're so expensive too. I bet I used to spend a grand a year on cigarettes.

I just don't want to get all wrinkly and leathery and have some deep man voice. [puke]

Not smoking in the car will be the toughest part *biting nails*

not smoking in the car was the worst part for me too, so boring...no a/c at the time and nothing to do so i'd light up. idle hands are the devils workshop for me ...chewing on straws helped.

I'll probably start smacking gum like a cow.

This is getting ridiculous. I've eaten 2 dinner rolls with butter, leftover chicken tortilla bake, a bowl of strawberry oatmeal and 2 bowls of cheerios. And I've only been up for 3 hours :-/

Wow Saph! First kudos on quitting! It's been so long since I quit smoking I can't remember having the muchies anymore. Gum chewing probably isn't such a bad idea, so long as you don't smack it like a cow! LOL
    Go girl!

Hmm, I have a question. I don't smoke but ALL the girls I work with do... In the dressing room. They stink my regular clothes up really bad. I don't say anything because they all do it. What do you newly smoke-free girls do about your street clothes getting smelly?

Unfortunately, we have to live with this problem! [puke] When I used to smoke I didn't see it as a selfish act, but being on the other side I now see how unaware I was about affecting the other people around me. I don't have a permanent locker at work so I take a bag and have it locked up by the housemom. In my bag I put dryer sheets. I also have a bag that I use for clean costumes only. I put dryer sheets in this as well. After I wear the costume for the night it does not go into the "clean bag". I can't avoid going home smelling like an ashtray. Yuck! My hair is the worst.

It's probably hard because you're exposed to the temptation all the time. It's hard enough trying to avoid the second hand smoke from the clubs. Find a different way to cope with nervousness.

You took the best decision. Nicotin is really bad for you, your body, your face.
It'll wrinkle your face prematurely, causes cancer (not only lungs but also elswhere in the body).
And it's a deadly mix with the Pill!!
you got it : I HATE it!!

OK I've found that I'm not having a hard time in the car. The hard part is at work. I cheated last night and smoked a cig at work but I haven't had any at all today and I'm not going to beat myself up over last night.

Besides, I've discovered a new habit...shrimp cocktail from the local taco shop...yummy.......

Also, brushing and flossing and drinking a big glass of water helps sidetrack me from the urge.

Love the dryer sheet idea; that's great! Thank you all! (smell my fresh smoke free breath)

    I wonder how Lillac's doing?

    Sapphire,

This is the best thread of the whole day!!!!!!!

I love to see anyone quit smoking. The tobacco companies make a fortune off of otherwise intelligent people killing themself for no reason by using their product.

They think we are dumb and we are too weak to quit. Nicotine is a nasty b*tch of a mistress and you can kick that witch to the curb like any other bad habit.

PLEASE do it and stay the course. Do it for me, do it for the queen of Sheba, do it for your parents, do it for old glory and most of all do it for your loved ones and your family and yourself most of all.

Sorry to rant but I really care about this subject. I quit about 25 years ago and it breaks my heart that young people still start this horrid habit today after all we know about the dangers.

Not to mention it is VERY unattractive to see a beautiful young woman smoke.

Any time you need a pep talk I am here and willing to listen or whatever. Do it kiddo! This monkey dance is for you!

To help keep clothes fresh smelling at work, right before you put on the outfit (not too soon) spray Febreeze Allergen on them. The Allergen product is much better for removing odours. Just do a mist above the garment. It will smell nice for sometime at work.

For the hair, i had a spray water bottle with a tad of vinegar and a great smelling (just a hint) of hair conditioner in it. I only used it about 3 times a night, again with a nice mist sprayed above my head, and then underneath, then fluff or shake or hair with your hands running through the strands. Too much will make your hair damp. A slight mist will do wonders. At least both these tricks worked for me.

The febreeze allergen is newer, but i hear it works better than the regular. It has never harmed anyones clothing that i know of. And not any fabric i have either. But keep the spray far enough away, just incase it make it wet. It does contain alcohol.

    Good luck,
    Pamela

Thanks everbody! Actually, the day's going pretty good. I really haven't had any problems during the day. Even not smoking in the car wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Basically I've totally quit, during the day. Work is another matter alltogether but I'm still not too disappointed with myself. OK, yes I had 2 half cigarettes last night but I was able to fight off a couple of cravings by 1) eating candy 2) drinking water and leaving the dressing room. Right now I"m kinda cheating by wearing my teeth bleaching trays during the day. Hey, can't smoke while I'm bleaching my teeth!

I'm toying with the idea of depositing $5 every other day into my savings account.

Thanks for the support. I've gotten some strong support from friends at work too and it really helps [clap]

I wish I could just quit, I find it one of the hardest things to do. Maybe it's because my husband does it too, dunno. I have asthma too, that makes me pretty retarted to be smoking, but if I stop smoking completely then I'll start eating more and thats the last thing I need. Man, it's so hard, I want one right now. EEK.

Eating more in exchange for quitting smoking? The choice should be obvious. And why does eating more have to be so bad. Munch on carrot or celery sticks. You could eat those for hours and not gain a lb. Low sodium pretzels, turkey jerky or even beef jerky, popcorn, smoothies, string cheese, and yogurt are all good snacks. It doesn't have to be Ding-Dongs and Ho-Hos. When I quit smoking I went to the gym to occupy my time and keep my mind off it. I ate more because I was burning more calories. Quitting smoking doesn't make you hungry, it just makes you want to do something with your hands and mouth. Naturally, eating comes to mind. Turn a bad habit into a good one and start some healthy snacking. It will raise your metabolism too. I have faith that you girls are strong enough to do this if you want it bad enough.

Thanks for the good advice Kobi. I'm going to attempt to do what you posted. It's just I do gain weight so easily so I get scared, but thanks no one has ever given advice to me on how to quit. Then again I don't ask much. Anyway, very helpful Kobi, thanks.

    Hi Nina

I would love to see you join Sapphire and successfully stop smoking. You are so young that it would soon be like you never smoked at all if you quit now. Don't wait until it stains your beautiful teeth, makes your skin yellow and leathery, makes you smell, and most of all gives you heart disease, high blood pressure and the possiblility of cancer or emphasyma.

I too have a history of lung problems, asthma, and pneumonia and the last thing I ever need is smoking so thank God I quit a long time ago.

You can do it Nina, I would love to hear that you quit too. (Sorry to be such a pest but I truly care that you live a good long life)
