Although I haven't quit yet myself I do have some good ideas to help you out.

    Chew on pencils or pens
    Chew on straws
Do the hand to mouth action without a cigarette
    Chew gum
If you have fake nails, suck on them
Do anything that will keep you busy

Munch on carrot or celery sticks. You could eat those for hours and not gain a lb.
hahaha I made a big bowl today of carrot sticks, radish slices, orange and apple slices too.

And you know what helped me quit when I was pregnant? Not chewing on a straw but sucking on one. Like a long tooter. or an empty pen. The inhale action was a great pacifier.

    Hi Nina

I would love to see you join Sapphire and successfully stop smoking. You are so young that it would soon be like you never smoked at all if you quit now. Don't wait until it stains your beautiful teeth, makes your skin yellow and leathery, makes you smell, and most of all gives you heart disease, high blood pressure and the possiblility of cancer or emphasyma.
I agree! It might make it easier for you both to know that someone is going through the same thing. You guys could really help each other out, along with anyone else who might want to quit smoking with you.
Good luck ladies! You have our support. [clap]

Sapphire, I think it would be good advice to stay out of the dressing room as much as possible. You don't need to surround yourself with that evil temptation. [flaming]

Congradulations Sapphire!! I quit ciggaretts also not too long ago. Today it has been six weeks!! Like you I quit cold turkey. I really think this is the best, no the only succsesful way to quit. My boyfriend quit with me which made it so much more motivational. I feel so much better, prettier, healthier now that I quit. I don't feel like a slave anymore. It is funny just like you and Kobi I had an ephiphany! I was taking I walk smoking on a ciggarete and decided I have been smoking almost seven years! This just isn't cool anymore. This is my last ciggarette and stomped on it before it was even down to the butt. GET SUGARLESS GUM. It helped me so much. After a week I did not even need the gum anymore. If you get through the first week you are pretty much home free! Good luck you will feel great soon! You will be wondering why you even started in the first place!

Noone ever said it would be easy. Like Lilac said, try some sugarless gum. I suggested the carrot sticks for when you want to satisfy the hand to mouth craving. It won't satisfy a nicotine craving. Each day you don't smoke makes the next day easier. I know you can do it Nina!

I think being apart of this site really helps because it's so hard to get away from the computer and this site. It's 9 am and I was awake around 7 today, I've wouldve probably already smoked 5 ciggerettes, but thanks to reading all these posts I can't get away from the computer so I've smoked none....lol.....i'm still munching on carrot sticks...i made my husband go get some more. Thanks for the support Kobi, youve been 100% helpful.

Stay with it Nina, you can do it!

Know what I did when I quit? I kept an ashtrap full of ashes but with not butts. (Or I would have tried to smoke the damn dirty things!) Every time I thought I wanted a cigarette I would stick my nose right down into the filthy ashtray and ask myself, "Is THAT what you want to smell like and what you want in your lungs?"

It helped me, that and about 500 rolls of butter rum life savers!

Sapphire, I haven't read all the post, but so far no one has suggested the patch. My mother smoked from the time she was 8 years old :o and never had a desire to quit. She said she enjoyed smoking. When she had a heart attack, the Dr.'s told her if she continued to smoke it would increase her risk of another dramatically. She used the patch and although she still got cravings, they helped her to stop smoking. She didn't even finish the full supply. I think they were in a 3-4 week type. The first package being the strongest and then lowering each week. She didn't use the final week of patches. It's been over 3 years now and every time she smells nicotine it disgust her and she starts apologizing for smoking around me when I was growing up. I know it will be difficult for you to go to work and try quiting. It's like being on a diet and sitting in front of a buffet. But give it a try, if you truly have the desire to quit, the patch will help. Oh, but don't smoke any while your on the patch. You could get an overdose of nicotine and get sick.

Thanks Breanna but I really don't think the patch would be helpful to me because I don't think my addiction is physical I truly believe it's PSYCHOLOGICAL! It's doing something with my hands, It's the sucking and blowing (ooooh that sounded nasty! maybe I should just give my boyfriend more blowjobs! j/k) It's having something in my mouth.

But I've been successful not smoking at home or the car or even out and about. I have cheated at work. Tonight my goal is to not smoke at all at work.

Oh yeah, and cigarettes are smelling gross to me too now.

And Lilac you're right! I also feel so much healthier, and prettier and I swear my teeth are shinier.

My biggest recommendation is to find anything to suck on that isn't a cigarette. Lollipops could help or just draw your empty hand to your mouth, take a puff of H2O, then remove your empty hand from your face. Good luck all who have gotten the desire to quit. I wish I could get that point.

I have a friend that only smokes at work because she wants to be doing something with her hands. I feel the same way at work, however I'm a non smoker and find myself twirling my hair all the time. Actually the men point it out, but I only do it at work. Maybe you could order a drink that keeps you interested in it instead of a cigarette. Like a Cosmopolitan. Fun glass, great color, tasteful and not to strong to get you drunk if you have a few. Sorry if I sound like a dork with my suggestions. Those are just a few of the things I do when I feel the need to do something with my hands.

Dee Dee! Good for you girl! Thats the spirit. Wouldn't it be cool if we could get lets say Ten people to quit smoking because of this thread? Lets keep trying! I am proud of you Dee Dee, if you need encouragement I am here so let me know! You can do it.

Ravin, I am pulling for you too, just tell yourself you want to quit and live a long healthy life more than you want that next cigarette. It seems hard I know but in the end it is all about what you want more. You can do it!

Granted, I've only been smoke free for a little over a week, but Nina, you have to truely want to quit. It gets to the point where it's a value judgement. What do you want more? I stopped one day and haven't picked up another one. It's hardest in the club. At first the smell of it is overwhelmingly disgusting, and you look around and say, 'wow, did I really do this?', but then it becomes normal again, and begins to smell good. That's when the healthy munchies come in handy. This forum is full of posts concerning disease and beauty, but what works for me when these arguments don't is knowing that I now run up the four flights of stairs to my apartment without becoming winded. I love it.

I used the patch and it worked amazingly. I didnt use it for the full term either. I was able to counteract that HABIT of 'hand to mouth' because it didnt have the enforcer of a nicotine craving BEHIND it. That addiction is sneaky - so maybe one can consider this?

Remove the need for the nicotine and the habit part is much easier to tackle.

Then as soon as I hit the 4 week mark of no smoking, I added up all the cash of one pack a day at 8 dollars a pack and took that cash and bought myself a beautiful cashmere and virgin wool long winter coat. Alfred Sung, its beautiful, then I stepped back looking at it and said thats a decent trade now isnt it? Heh heh, so I rewarded myself then apllauded myself for rewarding myself LOL, but damn straight I would much rather have the damn cash than the damn stinkin habit - and thats where it enforced my choice (behind the obvious of course i.e. smell, health etc)

    GOOD LUCK!

as of today its been 7 weeks and 2 days.....I AM a non smoker.

Breanna you don't sound like a dork. All the suggestions are great suggestions. Azuredee, you're right it IS hardest in the club. I cheated again. I'm basically smoke free until I go to work. I'm still fighting off cravings at work but I succumb (SP?) to a few. It would probably be a good idea to talk to my doc at this point, huh?

I had a shit day today and cheated. I felt so bad, but then I realized (again) that I really didn't want this, I understood that I had smoked, determined my reasons behind it, realized I was just screwing myself and that nobody else cared whether I smoked or not and I put out the cigarette. Sapphire, whatever you do, don't do the whole diet-like guilt trip. I actually had a doctor tell me a few months ago that it may just not be my time to quit (she knew I strip). She said 'cut back as much as you can and be happy with what you DO accomplish'. FYI - there's enough nicotine in one hit of a cancer stick to quell the craving. If you do cheat, stop at one drag. Regardless...congrats on the progress!

I think Azur makes a good point here. If you slide and have one hit, it does not mean you need to go buy a carton and give up. Of course it would be better to never have the first drag but if you fall off the horse.... well you know that one.

It is too important to give up folks.

In your profession especially. Second hand smoke is a very real thing. Being in a bar each night for a non-smoker is about like smoking a half pack each day even if you never light one yourself. Think about that.

I care, please stay the course.

Kobi that is an awesome point...here is a thought from my business coach. Set small obtainable goals that escalate to your ultimate end goal. Treat yourself to little rewards along the way for hitting your goals, works in business should work in your personal life as well.
