Default Epil-Stop... anyone ever had this problem?

I've often used this hair remover (much like Nair) called Epil-Stop. It's not only supposed to remove hair, but also retard hair regrowth the longer you use it. I've never had a problem using it on the hair "down there"... never had even the slightest bit of irritation. Well, today i opened a new bottle of the stuff, and within a minute of putting it on, i felt like my skin was on fire! I jumped in the tub and immediately rinsed it off, but the pain got so bad I actually started to cry (and I'm not a big crier!). It burned the skin off in some places. I haven't even been able to put aloe on it because I tried that and it stung like hell (so badly that I almost threw up and burst into tears again). The only thing that I found to put on the burned parts (which is pretty much just the two "bikini lines" since i hadn't gotten a chance to put it anywhere else before it started burning) was Neosprorin, but the only thing that really controls the pain is ice. I can't even sit comfortably, and i can't wear any clothes on my lower half.

I can't imagine that this is some sort of allergic reaction since I've used this stuff many times before and nothing at all has ever happened even after leaving it on for like 20 minutes to a half hour... even as recently as about a week ago. The only thing I can think of is that there's something really wrong with this new bottle of the stuff, but there was nothing that I could see was wrong with the safety seal, and it's no where near close to the expiration date.

Has this ever happened to anyone else, and does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with it or have an estimate on how long it will take to heal? I can't even walk without a lot of pain, and those two strips of skin look like raw meat... red, swollen and small patches of missing skin (oh my God, it looks like I have some hideous disease!).

Sounds like an allergic reaction to me. The thing about allergies is, they can develop at any time. You may have used this same product dozens of times in the past, but any allergy can show up suddenly, even if the product did not bother you at first. Take some benedryll and wait for the effects to wear off, then never use that stuff again.

Yes it does sound allergic. Thats not just normal irritation going on there. I can't use any of those damn products, i have to shave. And i would like to say Alanna, an allergic reaction is pretty rare the first time we are exposed to anything, food, products even bee stings. It's the times after that we have an allergic reaction. Some poeple right off the bat are allergic to certain things, but not normally. Our antibodies start to break down and we develope a reaction to a product we have been using for awhile, our bodies release Histamine. Strange, but true.
Sounds like a warning sign to stop, and read ingredients in other products to stay away from what is contained in that bottle.
    Good luck. Pamela

    ouch-
[cry]Sometimes the formulations in products are changed - I remember one time a friend used a dandruff shampoo for years, and didn't know they changed the formulation and had an allergic reaction.

Hi Alanna-I had that problem with Epil-stop right from the git-go. OMG it was horrible, I only had it on for a couple of minutes and it started burning like hell, even after I washed it off, it continue to burn so bad, I was in tears. Horrible redness. Worse, it never removed one hair.

I was curious if it was just the fact that I have sensitive skin that caused that reaction, so I used a friend as a guinea pig-figuring guys skin usually isn't as sensitive, and the exact same thing happened with him (although he didn't cry like I did *g*)

I'm not sure if they changed the forumation (maybe you had the old one, and I had the newer one, and then when you bought a new bottle, got the new forumation) that saved you the immediate reaction or if it was something else, but I definitely went through what you described.

YES! Tia_q, that's exactly what happened to me when i used the stuff from the new bottle! i never had a problem before with it, but this time, it burned from the first minute it was on. the first 48 hours, i had to keep ice on it 24/7 or it was just to painful to tolerate. in some places, the skin burned right off! those spots are still really red and tender, but the rest seems to be heeling ok. and, yup, every single hair is still there. i'm normally not skin sensative, so this is the first time i've ever gotten a reaction from anything. and it sure was a hell of a lot worse then i'd describe as "irritation" like they warn in the package insert... i mean, DAMN, it burned some of my skin right off! i finally got to a point where i can wear sweatpants, but it's probably going to be awhile longer before i can deal with working again. i'm never going to touch that stuff again... it's like sulfuric acid.

Have you called the company to complain? I would. Hopefully they will refund your money and consider adding a new warning about developing allergic reactons even if you've used the product before.

Ouch! Just wanted to say I hope it feels better soon, what a nightmare!

I tried one of those hair removal cream for face as a change from waxing on my upper lip area and the same thing happened. So I had an inflamed red moustache for a while! [nono]

you know, i still have some slight scarring from that incident and it's been months since it happened. i wonder if the scarring will every totally go away. luckily, it's not noticable in a club at all. it's not even really that noticable in house lighting, but you can tell if i point it out.

i wonder if they took it off the market. i noticed the last few times i've been to the drug store it was nowhere to be seen and i don't remember seeing a commercial for it in quite some time.

and after all that, every single damn hair grows back faithfully. [grr]

they do advertise the stuff to use for the "bikini line" area, which is where i put it. it does say not to get it IN any mucus membrane areas like the mouth or vagina, but since i don't grow hair in my vagina, it's kind of a mute point. as an example, you could use it on your upper lip area if you have a mustache problem, but to keep it from getting IN your mouth.

in any case, the place that was burned was nowhere near my vagina... it was the bikini line area, quite a number of inches away from any mucus membrane area (actually it's closer to the hip bone then it is to my vagina). i hope i don't need to draw a diagram.

Shan, i did want to write or call them to complain, but damned if i can find a stinking address or phone number for those people. all it says for an address is "New York, NY"... not very helpful.

i just noticed on the box it says "Won't Irritate Skin"... that is so not funny. i'd like to get ahold of the CEO of that company and coat him from head to toe in that "non-irritating" hair remover formula he's peddling. [evil]

i'm really curious if it was taken off the market. kind of reminds me when the Today contraception sponge was taken off the market... it just disappeared from the shelves and i never heard one word about why that was.

This person says they are obtaining a lawyer for a large group of people to join in one lawsuit, because thousands have all been burned by epil-stop

    http://www.infomercialscams.com/epilstop.htm

    http://search.yahoo.com/search?va=ep...=20&fl=0&x=wrb

I just did a search in the search engines for "epil-stop"+"lawsuit" . I never use any hair remover as my skin is highly sensitive to even perfumes. Just thought I would check into this though. That is terrible that so many people are literally getting their skin burned and scarred from this product.

Dancers and Models can lose work if their skin is burned. I would look into that lawsuit if I were a Dancer or Model and a public product burned my skin off.

Miss a week or two of work because of epil-stop and how much income lost is that?

Don't miss a week of work, get a worse infection from the skin burns, get scarring and how much more income is lost?

When a potential client sees burned skin, that could also result in loss income.

    Just something to think about.

I have the reaction Alanna described with any and every hair remover cream- even if I use on my legs! I've tried every new product that comes out too. I've had many burns :-/ I'm just super sensitive I guess... so I'm stuck being a slave to the blade

Anyway, I'd say if a person never had a reaction such as this- it is because of some other irritant they have used- new bath or laundry soap, shampoo etc. Its so hard to tell what it actually could be without removing or changing each products for like 2 weeks and trying the hair remover again until you find the offending product.

Something important to note is if you are taking acne meds or some antibiotics that many of these will make your skin fragile. If you use Accutane DO NOT WAX or use products like Nair and so on- it will rip your skin to shreds. It is my understanding that such products should be avoided for a year even after Accutane is finished

What I have heard and experienced is that some areas can be more sensitive then others. I know that for the most part I did not have a problem with it except in the inside of my elbow (and that was only a mild irritation).

I have not tried it down there but have used it on my back, arms, boobs and stomach. With my arms and back the hairs have regrown shorter then before, the hairs on my boobs are almost non-existant any more, and the hairs are more sparse then they used to be.

As far as using the product goes, you are only suppose to leave it on each area for like five minutes and NEVER longer then ten.

I don't know if there is a guarantee that each bottle will affect you the same way so it would be wise, no matter what hair removal you are using besides shaving or waxing, to do a test patch before using it all over.

Alanna I am sorry to hear about your problem. I want to let you (and others who might read this) know that it does not seem that you had an allergic reaction. the injury you described was a chemical burn.

When use any chemichal for any reason in my work place I read the MSDS (materiel safety data sheets) to find out what dangers there are, and how to properly handle contamination.

In the home, we must read the warnings on the bottle closely, as well. Though I have to say that manufacturers almost never just say what their product is/does. In actuality epil stop and all other delapitory products are acids, which literally dissolve the hair at the base and seep into the follicle. Naturally every time you use a delapitory product it also sets it's acid to work on your skin. Wet skin is most susceptible.

I am sitting here with an actual bottle of epil stop in my hand and the warning label has several warnings against using it on wet skin, or wetting skin to remove the product. Yet, should an inappropriate area become contaminated, it reccomends rinsing with cool water!

    Isn't that interesting?! :o

Good luck on the lawsuits! I hope you win!

Yikes!!! That sounds like a chemical burn!! Sometimes during the bottling process, they use too much of one thing and it causes chemical burns. I had that happen one time with Nair...except I had 2nd degree chemical burns up and down both legs and in the bikini area. I thought I was going to die...

I think it's just better to shave or wax...using chemicals on your body is just too unreliable...

OUCH...I know how you are feeling...hope you're doing better!

Ok girls, my biggest recommendation is to stop wasting all your money on temporary hair removal. Instead, get it all removed by electrolysis.
