    Default "Weak in the Knees"

I was working the other night and I was into my first set and I squatted down and all of a sudden my left knee didn't feel "normal." The pain wasn't excruciating, just slightly painful. This has happened to me before and usually I would just rest and stop doing squats and lunges for a while.

Here is my question: I do have medical insurance, however I have to work to pay my premium and co-payments. The first time this happened to me was a few months after I first started dancing, at 22. So, I don't think it's an age thing. It has happened maybe three times since and it has been 12 years.

I had a trainer tell me that cycling and/or walking are the safest forms of cardio during this time.

I do have to work. Are there any suggestions on how I can work and keep minimal pressure on my knee? I am in a bikini bar, so I am stage dancing more than lapping.

    Thanks. Suggestions really appreciated.

    Cheers,

Whew Corey all i really know is our knee's do take a beating. I think one important move to do before getting on stage is to stretch out your legs alot first.

Then remember the moves that take their toll on your knee's. Also the shoes we wear, if they are pretty darn high, it's going to put even more strain on your knee's.

I would slow it down on the squats with your dancing shoes some, or not do them at all for awhile, untill you can find out if your knee cap or the knee itself is ok.

Mine used to pop, then hurt. I would do many variations of leg stretches before going on stage.

Also gave them a rest, stopped doing a straight squat, but instead would put a little more pressure on the other leg, and go down with...say maybe the one that hurts stretched out some.

maybe an Xray in the future would help to see if anything is going on. But i do know squats are very hard on our knee's. And if you do many a night in high shoes, your knee's are working hard.

    Good luck,
    Pamela

    Hey Pamela and Anabolic,

Thanks for the info. I danced for a long shift today. Yesterday I rested and rode the imcumbent bike and got a lot of sleep.

I didn't fee anything today, but I will contuue to take it easy.

I am getting a bunch of dental work this week, so X-rays may have to wait for a little while.

    Cheers,

I have knee problems too and have found that taking gluchosamine and chrondoitin help. It takes awhile to notice the improvement though.

Corey, when you are doing your squats do not flex your knees less than 90 degrees. Always do warm ups before you start a workout. Do not do any high impact exercises. That means if any of your moves in you routine are high impact- change them. Always use proper posture and body alignment in daily life.
There is some controversy about the effectiveness of glucosamine but as my friend says,"It couldn't hurt."

I've got a friend who blew her knee out several years ago playing softball, and it has degenerated into rheumatoid arthritis. She is now in her mid forties so she is pretty young to be dealing with this problem. She takes glucosamine and it helps.

they also make MSM in a lotion with aloe vera, it also softens skin(i crawl alot onstage, so this is nice for me),makes hair and nails stronger..

    Hey

I haven't read this post for a couple of weeks. Thank for all of the advice. My knees have just sort of figured out what they needed so they are doing fine.

I think I have helped the situation a bit; I have been power walking instead of running and getting my workouts outside more instead of in the gym, (five minute drive from the beach, 15 minute bus ride ), and I have been more conscientious about my moves during my routine at work. I have also been wearing boots more often and this helps me a lot; more support.

    Cheers,

Take glucosamine supplements! I have had knee and hip trouble since my first year of dancing, and I've been at it 8 years. I started taking glucosamine 3-4 years ago and it really makes a difference! My knees don't crack and pop or make that grindy sound like they do if I don't take the supplements. I notice them getting worse if I forget or skip a few days. I have been taking a glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM combo in the last year or so and I think it is better - the combo is supposed to help with absorption in your body. Get 500mg tabs and take 3 per day with food (or with your other supps) for one month to build up, then drop to 2 tabs per day to maintain.

Also use the bike for cardio, and avoid getting in positions on stage that put you straight on your knees. I do alot of stage also, and do get down on my knees, but have learned to do it in a way that puts my weight more on my upper body and/or puts my knees at an angle instead of straight on the floor. If you're on all fours, spread your knees a bit more and lean forward a bit so you put less weight on your knees. When you're getting into and out of that, learn to roll in and out. You can start standing, bend straight down and put your hands on the floor, put some of your weight on your hands, and sort of slide down onto your knees. Or start out by getting on the floor frontally, then roll over using your hands for support. If you crawl, practice doing it with your toes straight out and with your weight more on the your hands, then sort of roll your knees so your feet go up in the air when you move - it's hard to describe but it looks sexy and keeps your weight from sitting directly on your knees. Practice at home, and you'll be coming up with all sorts of ways to do good stage stuff without killing your knees!

I would swear by glucosamine/chondrotin supplements. I have told my story several times on here so I won't repeat it again. If you want to read it please look back at my prior posts. They will help with trouble you are having now and will make your joints stronger to help prevent future problems. I have been dancing for 4 years and have no problems since I started taking the supplements about 4 months into my dancing career. They are truly amazing! And I don't even get paid to say that!

Yes I agree w/bridgette, when I first started dancing and went on stage I did alot of floor work/ crawling on knees and my knees always bothered me and this was when I was like24 ,I havent gone on stage much in the past 3 years or if I do they dont allow floor work and there is no pole and my knees havent hurt me in years.

There's been a lot of good advice here, but is there anything else I can take? I already take glucosamine/chondrotin supplements and I'm still in pain. I took 3months off dancing, becuase my knees hurt so bad. When they started feeling better I went back. So I did the same pole/floor work I used too. The first couple of time it wasn't bad but by the end of the night I was in the dressing room with ice packs of my knees. I've cut down a lot on floor work, but my knees still hurt. Even right now as I'm typing they are bothering me. Is there any stronger supplement you can recomend?

    Hey Trixie,

I don't know about any other supplements save for the ones mentioned in this post, which I will try.

Since my trouble started, wearing boots instead of heels has helped me a bit. I know that a lot of dancers can't give up their 6 or 8inch heels, but I feel a lot less pressure wearing boots of different heights. Yesterday I wore 31/2 in. all day, today 41/2 and 51/2 inches. I was dancing 1/2 or slightly longer stage sets and my knees are only slightly achy but not alarmingly so.

I will try those supplements that you and some of the other dancers are using.

    Cheers,
