    Default Mexican highlights/makeup

I want my Mexican girlfriend to get her hair highlighted, change her makeup and nails, but we dont have any examples or ideas for her of mexican women or women with dark hair. She has long straight black hair, with a soft curl in it. She also wants a change. Can you girls help her achieve stripper style? I was thinking she could get it taken up a few shades of brown, then highlight that with golden highlights.

Selma Hayek is a Mexican beauty. Pics of her should be easy to find. But I wouldn't recommend trying to mimc other women's looks.

For hair, make a highlighting appt for your gf at one of the better salons in town and ask for suggestions. Not SuperCuts! It will be a little more pricey, but they will have ideas on what kind of highlights would look good with her particular face, hair and skin. It's best not to try to go too light, as that will cause more damage to her hair, and won't look right. Furthermore, it sounds like she has beautiful hair, so don't change it too much!

As for makeup, some salons will do a makeover and tips session, but you can get makeovers and alot of ideas at department store makeup counters for free. Make a few trips to different stores and different branded counters - they'll give lots of ideas and will of course want to sell their products, but you don't have to buy any! They don't charge for the makeover in the stores. Just go ask. Your gf will love having the ladies fuss over her, so remind her to pay special attention to what colors they use on her eyes, lips and cheeks. She can buy a few basic items at the counters, and ask for samples. Then go to the drugstores with the samples and purchased items to look for similar and coordinating colors. Also, when getting the makeovers, have her pay attention to the way the makeup is applied - sometimes that can make all the difference.

With these tips you'll have your gf experimenting in the bathroom for hours!

I'm a bit leery of lightening hair and then adding highlights because for me 1) I look tacky when I lighten my naturally dark hair 2) the maintenance on lightened and highlighted hair gets to be a real pain in the ass as well as pricey. I recently dyed my dark brown hair to natural black. Looks super striking and dramatic (I love it!) My recommendation is keep the dark hair but add dramatic hightlights around the face. I wouldn't go for a full head of highlights right away. I'd start with partial highlights then add more as desired. But that's just me. Like Bridgette said, don't go to SuperCuts or the equivelent; spend the money in a higher end salon where the stylists have extensive training in the latest cut and color methods.

Makeup...take her to a M.A.C. counter, spend the $60 for a makeover and tell them you (she) wants a dramatic nightclub look (maybe toned down a tad for the day) or if you purchase $40 in products from MAC they'll give her a free eye demonstration. imo, the eyes are the trickiest anyhow. Also, I think it's not so much the product but the application. Good makeup brushes are essential for a fab face.

Lightening the hair is usually a bad bad thing. I agree with everyone else, go to a good salon, but find a couple pictures to bring with you. A good stylist will be able to look at the pictures your gf likes and apply them to her face and look in a way that looks right on her. Maybe some chunky honey colored streaks around her face?

Try a salon that has conditioning toners. They don't ruin your hair. They add volume, shine and if you want, shear color. I am half Spanish with dark brown hair. I have partial high and low lights and I experiment every five weeks or so w/ a toner. Sometimes I use a light brown, some times auburn. It is not bright and garish, just a shear wash of color that fades gradually.

Highlights add a gorgeous hue to dark hair. I think subtle autumn reds would look rich throughout. I had those and they did look very pretty. If she is naturally beautiful, it does not take too much to enhance it. Many makeup counters give free consultations.
