    Default White spots from tanning???

Does anybody ever develop dime-sized white spots from tanning beds or the sun? I do. I don't even remember when they started. I've seen these on other people too. I used to get them on my shoulders, upper arms, and back. This summer they have lightened up a bit and are only on my stomach. From what I hear it is caused by bacteria on the skin?(Yuck!) Any thoughts? One guy told me once that dandruff shampoo would get rid of it. I still haven't figured out if he was being serious or pulling my chain, you never knew with him. I bought some cheap stuff anyway and tried it. I also stopped laying out and tanning at the same time so I don't know if it went away because of the shampoo or no UV exposure. I thought with all the knowledgeable ladies and gents here, someone might be able to help me.

Yes, Selsun Blue shampoo will help clear up your spots. It is caused by a fungul infection that comes off of tanning beds. I usually just do the standing kind of tanning combined with self tanner to minimize the risk of getting this fungus.

If you use self tanner that is brown comming out of the bottle, it will act like makeup and cover your spots while you are at work for a more flawless skin appearence.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Paris, I will try the shampoo.

Self tanner on my body makes me break out in a rash that really itches! If I sweat the rash gets worse and shows up under my breasts, on the backs of my knees, and in the crease of my elbows. Very unattractive! I started using the self tanner when I wouldn't be sweating, but I still get what looks like mosquito bites all over my body. I gave up on the stuff, but still use it on my face.

I also got sun spots when I was tanning last year. What it could also be caused from is if you use a tingle and take a contraceptive. I used to get them on my chest when I was on the Nuvaring and using Matahri tingle.

    dear kobi,

my old roomate had these white spots, which especially stood out from tanning, on her shoulders and upper back. Her doctor told her to use selson blue, like paris said. she would cake it on the spots like a thick lotion for an hour or so before her evening shower.

from what i recall, the dermatologist told her it was something to do with the oils in her hair. It made sense, seeing the affected areas. and i must add: she was a very squeeky clean one, that washed and blow dryed her hair daily.

The selson blue worked for her. no more spots and she resumed her tanning nice and evenly.

selson blue does work but if you keep getting white spots wash your hair in it to because it does partly come from your hair..

Thank you everybody for the advice. I just have one question. So why is it happening on my stomach? ??? This summer is the first time it has appeared there. It has previously only shown up on my shoulders and upper arms, so the idea that it comes from the hair makes sense, except that it is showing up on my stomach now.

I do also use a contraceptive and tingle...

Anyway, I'll get off of my butt and get to Walmart to get some Selson Blue!

My dermatoligist (sp?) said it's not from any oils in your hair, it's from you put that lotion on your body and then lay in a box that heats up. Of course your going to get some kind of bacteria growing on your body. Because I never used the Selsun Blue trick, my derm gave me a soap of some sort to use and that's what did it for me!

Kobi you could stop using a tingle and just try a bronzer/accelarator for a while and see if that stops the spots. I use Sex Pot bronzer now instead of the Matahri tingle and the sun spots haven't come back.

BTW, does anyone turn over in the bed at all? Because I just lay there on my back the whole time and once I was in there for 20 mins or so and it's hot in there and I was sweating. Well I got out and I noticed I had spots from where I was laying on my back and butt. Does that happen to anyone else?

Nizoral should work too, if you go to your doc he can give you the pill form which works much better.

I do turn over in the bed to make my tan more even, so that makes sense that it would come from the bed and get on my stomach.

Yes, I know. I'm awful to myself, but I don't know what to do?! I am very pale naturally, and I don't like it. Everybody knows that tan skin covers up flaws and makes you look more toned. In Kansas I could get away with pale skin in the winter, but in Vegas? No way. I do protect my face with towels and daily SPF. I guess a lot of people have their evils. For some it is smoking, for me it is tanning.
why dont you try airbrush tanning?
Self-tanning lotion on my body makes me break out in a rash. I have no idea why. I have always had super-sensitive skin and get rashes easily, especially from jewelry, which I am allergic to. I have never gotten airbrushed before. Has anybody here tried it?

    Thanks for everybodies excellent advice!

I hate going to the tanning salon. A few years ago a friend of mine got a real bad fungus infection on her back. And my husband gets his herpes to come back when he uses it too!!
    I stick to sunless!!
There are sooo many brands I'm sue you could find one that is gentle for your skin. Hypoallergenic!!
The most expensive brand are not always the better ones!!

    dear kobi,

scratch the smarttan.com and check out www.lotionbarn.com. go to skin care and then white spots from tanning. there is a whole discussion with related links and looks like its very informative. apparently there is not one explanation. each individual is unique.

Get a gallon size jug of distilled white vinegar and keep it next to your tub.Saturate the loofah with the vinegar then add the normal amount of body wash.Work in a circular motion. They should dissappear in two weeks. If you continue to tan, keep up this procedure. The white spots will stay gone.

    Hey girls!!!
I work at a tanning salon as my day job, and it sounds like ya'll are talking about two things. Kobi, it sounds like you have a fungal skin infection often sometimes called tinea veriscolor. Dont worry, its not infectious, but you should definitly see a dermotologist for it. I've had some customers and a girlfriend that got it, and the dandruff shampoo did not clear it up. Although the doctor has pills and creams to get rid of the fungus, sometimes it requires multiple treatments and several months to rid of the discoloration even if the fungus is killed.
This is NOT from the tanning salon, again the fungus can not be transmitted from people, it usually occurs from specific enviroments and waters, like pools or beaches.

Shayden, I know exactly what youre talking about , girl. We call those "pressure spots" where your body touches the bed too hard when you lay there, it gives white spots. The best way to get rid of these spots is to alternate the lay down beds with a stand up bed!!!!! Happy Tanning!!!!

    Kobi-
I am a former tanning salon owner and I have seen those lovely white spots on myself self as well as many clients. If the spots are located on each shoulder close to the shoulder blade and on the lower back in close to the tailbone then this is due to the lack of blood circulation in these areas because a majority of your body wait is distributed in these areas. I recommend doing the what we used to call the "tanning bed dance" by adjusting your position after every 5 to 10 min in your session. If the spot are small and you have more than one in an area it could be an allergy to the chemical in the cleaner that is used on the bed. I recommend that you ask for an extra towel when you go in to tan and get it wet in the bathroom then wipe down the bed to remove any residue from the cleaner. I know there are many people that do have a reaction to those bed cleaners. The other option is to try and use a stand up unit or rotate between the bed and the stand-up to eliminate this issue.
I am very pale too so if I tan I will only use a tamming unit that has VHR tanning lamps which are lamps that minimize the "burning". Plus these beds are quicker, about 10 to 15 min. max. My favorite tanning unit is the Dr Mueller "Orbit", a 12 min. beautiful golden color is produced on people with the fair skin. Also, don't forget to use lotion!! Don't use the cheap stuff...I like Supre products, they give great results and feel ooh so good on your skin.

I don't tan too much anymore (I am getting old and I am on birth control therefore my skin tends to get blotchy brown spots) so lately I have been using the Mystic Tan system at my local salon. It is the self tanning system that gives good, even color and I have sensitive skin and I haven't had any allergic reactions.

I hope this helps! Good Luck!

I had spots like this on my hand. It looked like ring worm but my doctor told me is wasn't. I thought it was from the tanning bed too so I quit going for a while and it slowly cleared up as I lost my tan.

I have never had any other problems but my tanning bed place is really clean. Maybe you should start going somewhere else?

It sounds like fungus to me. that stuff is tricky.
I always shower immediately after tanning and try to never get to hot and sweaty in there so maybe that is why I have never had a problem.

See a dermatologist and good luck.
