I don't take Zoloft but I do take another antidepressant medication and the side effects faded away with time, they usually do in most medications. Just trying to help

I have a very sordid past (long story) I was on a lot of medications. I've taken Zoloft and I didn't like it, made me very dizzy. I took Prozac and that made me sick to my stomach. I took Effexor and it made me have violent mood swings. The one I took that I actually liked was Celexa. But it's different for everyone. Plus side effects take a couple weeks to subside, when you body gets used to it.

Paxil is similiar, I have taken that. i suspect the side affects are weight gain, lethargy, mood swings and stomach pain. It takes 3 months for these side affects to go away. But they will.

During my divorce 3 years ago I had a lot of stress and became depressed. Zoloft was prescribed for me, and it was a wonder drug. I did not have any side effects. It certainly did not make me "happy" all of a sudden or "feel better" if I took it, but it allowed me to gradually get back to being myself again. I could still make major decisions, etc., while taking the drug. I took zoloft for about four months and did not notice a difference when I stopped taking it.

I had a VERY positive experience.

A few years ago I had a bout with depression. I took a combo of Wellbutrin and Zoloft. Wellbutrin can help you quit smoking. On that I completely lost all interest in cigarettes. Don't even try to drink alcohol because your tolerance will go way down. And sex? Forget it. I could masturbate until the cows came home and nothing would ever happen. (HAHA TMI I know, but do be aware it WILL affect you sexually) After several weeks of the medication I started having panic attacks. That's when I quit.

Another time I took Celexa. This one actually helped while the other drugs did nothing(nothing positive anyway). It takes weeks, maybe even months for any antidepressant to start working, so don't expect a total turnaround in attitude right away. On Celexa I really did start feeling better. I became happy and social like my old self again. Now I'm not on anything but if I ever felt like I needed something I would not want any other medication other than Celexa.

Thanx girls for replying. I am going to see if I could take the herbal approach first. If any of you have tried this approach, please let me know how that went as well. Once again thanx guys!

Antidepressants sure have their place in the world. Many many people are on some sort of prescribed antidepressant and will never speak of it. To do so means weakness. That is wrong. First, with my first panic attack, the ER doctor, told me to "get a grip." Yea, ok. I thought i was losing my friggin mind.

I then went to work and asked lots of doctors about these drugs. One they all agreed on! They are VERY powerful.

I am all for taking medications! I have learned to adjust. Thats the tough period, and the majority of people can't get past the side effects. Usually a couple weeks.

Anyway, here is a good site. Also a toll free number. And any side effects anyone has, these companies (different ones) like to send you a fill out sheet, as to why you had to stop taking the med. This is one way they keep serious side effects known. Even after the testing on patients period is over, and the drugs are approved.

SSRI's are pretty hit or miss. Some people feel like the depression is lifted, other people feel flat and dull, and some people see no difference. Some people have no side effects, some people have all the side effects, most people just have some weight gain and maybe one other side effect. The only way to know is to take it. There is very very very little physical risk associated with SSRI's, so just take it for a couple months, see what you think and go from there. Your doctor should schedule a follow up in that time frame anyways.

Herbal remedies do the same things as the drugs, but they aren't regulated the way drugs are. I'm all about alternative medicine and herbal remedies, but I think when it comes to something like this you need something that has been tested, refined, and approved by the medical community.

I have been taking Zoloft for 8 years now (wow, that's a long time). It's hard to describe how it feels, it doesn't really alter my mood, just takes the edge off somehow. I've been labelled manic-depressive, but I hate lables, basically I just feel things to excess, if I'm sad, happy, angry, my emotions are too strong for the situation - does that make sense? Anyways, the Zoloft brings it into perspective, into the "normal" realm. I have tried going off them, I've tried other meds, but I will probably be on this one forever, and I'm okay with that.
Hard to remember the side effects, cause I don't really have any now, but I do remember having to play around with what time of day I took them, because I had more energy, and I had trouble sleeping at first. Definitely no weight gain, if anything I think I lost a little. Did notice it took longer to orgasm, it still seems to take a while, but I get there The drinking is a funny one, sometimes it just hits ya really hard - I still drink fairly regularly, but every once in awhile I find I get sloshed after only a couple drinks, hard to predict the tolerance. I can generally tell when this will happen though, if it feels like the first drink is going right to my head, I won't have any more.
Honestly, the Zoloft really was the best thing that has happened to me, I never knew how bad things were for me until I started to feel normal, and now I wouldn't give that up for the world.

I took zoloft for a good while. It did help me. It didn't really make me happy all of a sudden, it just sort of lifted the cloud some. The side effects did lessen with time. If I needed it, I think I would take it again, despite the side effects.

I tried the herbal route and it did not work for me like zoloft. It helped a little but not enough. I decided to try the herbal route when I saw a magazine article in the July 2003 Alternative Medicine magazine at the grocery store about how to conquer anxiety. I read the article a few more times after starting the herbal route and realized that the lady who wrote the article didn't have an actual chemical imbalance in her brain like I do. My situation is more similar to Aras. When I went off of my medication my family could definately tell. My brain works way to fast and my thoughts get too extreme. Zoloft helped me feel like a calm and normal person with out having to take sleeping pills or drink a lot of alchohol.

My doctor gave me a few weeks of free samples for Effexor. That is what I have been on recently. I didn't feel tired when I started taking it. I am going back to zoloft next week to see which one I like better.

A great way to counteract the sexual side affects of antidepressants is ginko biloba.

Hey girls thanx again. The thing is I never thought I would have to take pills like these. I mean yeah I've smoked a little weed, but other than that I really don't like taking pills. I also don't want to be on anything for years. I'm not knocking others that are, I just don't want to be like that. As you can see this is a little scary for me. :-/ Well I'm gonna try to do things the natural way and if that doesn't work I'll give the zoloft a try.
Once again girls thank you all very much. You all have been very helpful, you guys have helped to take the edge off me a little. REDZ

Redz: A lot of emotional/mental problems can be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. You get a chemical imbalance in your stomach and you take something for the heartburn. You get a chemical imbalance in your brain and you should take something for it as well. No difference in the two.

hey REDZ-- i take zoloft! i got in a depressive slump around last Feb., and i started taking zoloft. it took about three weeks to kick in. i started with 50 mg's and now i take 100 mg every day. i am happy with the effects. ara is right- it "takes the edge off". like ara, i felt emotions to the extreme.
after taking zoloft for awhile i just feel like myself again- i dont get stressed out over stupid shit, and i am a much happier and pleasant person. about a month ago i stopped taking it for a couple weeks, and i noticed a definite drop in my mood. as for side effects- i lost about 3 pounds. when i drink, it hits me REALLY hard and i get out of control, so i stay away from alcohol. i dont think it is addictive, but i'm not positive. i dont want to be on this forever, but i am going to keep taking it for a few more months.
my doctor said i have a chemical imbalance- i have lower levels of serotonin than the norm. serotonin is the brain chemical that makes you feel happy and relaxed. serotonin's effect is similar to carbohydrates-- after a carb heavy meal you feel content and relaxed. that is a good comparison to how i feel most of the time now. i can still feel emotion, of course, but i am much more...for lack of a better word....happy.
