I'm on the depo shot. I love it but I know that other girls on it don't. Of course, side effects fade the longer you're on it and I've been on it for about 2 years. My hair hasn't fallen out, I haven't gained weight, and I have absoultely no period A friend of mine said his wife was on the one that's the little T shaped thing that the doctor inserts into your vagina but he said she gained weight, the sticks they insert into your skin is also supposed to be good and my sister's on the pill and her skin's cleared up. But, the only one that stops your period (as far as I know) is the shot.

P.S.: if the pill depressed you, there's a good chance the shot will too? Have you tried antidepressants? You need birth control absolutely though! Good for you you're finally going to again!

Since the very popular patch (Ortho Evra) is out for dancers for visibility reasons , your options are as follows
    1. The Pill - there are many excellent low dose options now available, but you simply have to try them for yourself to see if one causes you side effects. I find it is impossible to predict how an individual will react. The main downside is that they MUST be taken not only daily but also around the same time each day to be really effective.
    2. DepoProvera - Shot every 3 months - women either love it or hate it. Many will have no periods at all after 6-12 months but irregular spotting/bleeding is common during the initial period of use. Some complain of heavy bleeding, weight gain (studies show average 2-5 pounds weight gain, mostly water), hair loss, mood changes, etc. Others have none of the above, just no periods and no bambinos.
    3. Cervical cap/diaphragm - significantly less effective and affect spontaneity. Recommended only for couples who would be OK if the method failed.
    4. Norplant - (the sticks below the skin) used rarely now due to complaints of scarring. Same side effects as DepoProvera.
    5. IUDs (Intrauterine Devices) - Great for women who are at low risk of obtaining an STD (may make a minor infection a more serious one, but studies show that is mostly the case in the first month of use.)
There are 2 main brands: 1) Paragard which lasts 10 years but about a third of women have markedly increased cramps and bleeding with their periods. 2) Mirena - a newer option which has a tiny amount of progesterone which actually decreases the periods and cramping, but only lasts 5 years. MY FAVORITE.
Both are inserted nearly painlessly in the office in about 15 seconds, and come out even easier. Each costs about $350-450, but divided over time they are by far the cheapest forms of birth control.

All that being said, condoms are still the only thing that prevents all the other nasty stuff out there. I see a lot of married women coming in with STD's that they have "no idea" how they got. Not a fun conversation.

Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck

Well now it's abstinence. And proud of it. I don't have a bf now. And stopped seeing the ex. We were still exclusive however.

We used condoms. Sometimes i would insert a spermicide as well. I thought he would have a vasectomy. Never happened. I never had my tubes tied. But would have for the relationship.

If i have sex, and it wont be for along time now, i will always have a man wear a condom.

My ex and i had a baby, so we had to be careful after that.

I am thinking about the IUD in the future, but now....It's self pleasure by choice!

Wow, lots of info. I greatly appreciate it. Im only having sex with the ex still. I think it is more safe for me right now since I'm back on the dating scene. No i was never on antidepressants or nor I want to be. Just seeing how much weight my sister has gained from them is scary. Thanks ladies i think im going to go with Depo Provera again and see how it affects me this time. [/color]

Oh I donno, could it be my lovely personality? Never been pregnant so I'd have to say it's fool proof.

Okay I'll play serious now. I'm not on any BC, actually I'll need medical help when I'm ready.

I'm on Ortho TriCylen Low Dose pills. They are the ones that help clear up the skin. And they do help, I still get an occasional break-out but they reduce the time-of-the-month zits. I've been on some sort of BC pill since the age of 17, so I can't say if it's caused any bloating or weight gain. My weight has fluctuated over the years so who knows for sure. I can still squeeze into my clothes from 5 yrs ago, they are tighter now, but I doubt that is the pills fault so much as it is a natural part of aging.

The pill also makes me cramp less and my period much lighter. Plus I always know when to expect my period. They work great for me. I'm in a long-term monogamous relationship so I have no worries about condoms or STD's. The pill is a great choice in my case.

Oh yeah, like many dancers, I don't have insurance but my pills are still only $20 a month at Planned Parenthood.

Doc forgot my method - NuvaRing. It's a ring that you wear inside for three weeks, then take out for a week. It's a hormonal method of birth control so I would imagine the same side effects you might get from the pill would apply. I love it - stick it in and forget it. I have been considering an IUD, though, since I haven't been able to talk my bf into a vasectomy.

    Collette got me.
Nuvaring is also a nice product which has only been out for a short while. The method of administering hormones vaginally has been out for a number of years for hormone replacement, so in that sense it is not really new. Should give a response closest to the patch, since there are less peaks and valley of hormone levels compared with the pill. Also avoids first pass through the liver, which may help to decrease nausea and a few other side effects.
I should also mention that there are spermicidal methods (cream, foam, film) but all of these used be used in addition to other methods and not as a single method.
For those folks looking for permanent birth control there is a very new method of tubal called Essure which involves placing "plugs" in the tubes. It is done through the vagina and there are no incisions, and one may return to work in 24 hours. the only downside is that it takes 3 months after placement for the tubes to close completely, and other methods must be used during that time. The FDA and studies show it to be more effective than a standard tubal, which has a 2-5/1000 failure rate (less than 1%, but not zero).
    Just FYI

I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen for 6 months ( my Dr. told me my body had to adapt to it) and bled for, oh, I'd say 5 of those six months... it was misery, but I just kept on! I called a DIFFERENT doc and the next day she had me on Ortho-Novum, which is a constant dose of hormones instead of 3 different levels (like the tri-cyclen). 3 days later I stopped bleeding now all is good! This is just a bit of info... I'm no doctor, but apparently my situation is not as unique as I thought... many women on the tri-dose pills have problems with bleeding at the wrong times of the month.... if you do, don't wait as long as I did to see your doc and change pills!

I have a question - exactly which types or brands of hormonal birth control will make your boobs grow?
I'm not currently sleeping with anyone, but would love to get a little surgery-free fullness.........

About the Essure method, it sounds great, and can be...For some. When i went for the IUD consult. I mentioned Essure. My doc. said it's the newest form of bc, and there just is not enough data yet to support the procedure. There are risks involved (as with any) and side effects.

I was discouraged from the procedure for now, maybe in a couple years he said will i be able to try. They have hade cases where severe bleeding where reported he said. No deaths reported.

But i think my doc. likes a new method of bc to be around for awile before just giving every woman the procedure.

Remember the old Dalcon Shield and what happened after years of using, alot of women got very ill.

I wil take my docs. advice. Wait and see if anything strange pops up.
    I hope not, sounds promising!

Regarding the above comment and the Essure method, I wonder if your doctor is trained and credentialed in the procedure. If not, he/she would be losing business by recommending it. There are very few of us out there at present who have gotten the additional training to do these.
(Also, older is not necessarily better. All of the hormone replacement hoopla is based on studies done on Premarin and Prempro, which are the oldest forms on the market, and ones which many docs have stopped using regularly due to studies showing less side effects from newer forms.)
In addition, the studies are very favorable, especially compared with traditional tubals which have many more possible operative risks due to the necessity of entering the abdomen.
So for permanent BC I think it to be a real advance. However, the Mirena is quick and easy, may reduce periods, and is easily reversible. For a cash pay patient it is also likely to be cheaper - $400 every 5 years vs $2000 once. Do the math!
    Good luck

Thanks GD, i work for a hospital so i will be partially covered they told me. It is a health risk for me to get pregnant again. MOney is not the issue, my health is. Yes they do the Essure method. only know what i am told. And i have a heart problem, so i can't take any form of bc with hormones.

The IUD looks promising for me. I will wait until the Essure has been around longer anyway, just my personal decision. PS they are a group privately owned, many docs. Hibiscus OBGYN.

Sounds reasonable. Despite your heart problem, the tiny amount of progesterone that enters the body from the Mirena IUD should not be an issue, but Paragard works well for 2/3 patients in my experience.

    Velvet,
I have a lot of patients who are dancers or escorts and they seem to have a unique set of health needs due to their occupation, such as treatments which do not drip out of the vagina, or require periods of abstinence.
I was doing a websearch for site that dealt with the professions and came across this one, which has brought up many issues as well as teaching me some terminology.
When I was in med school I had a few friends who danced their way thru school as one of the few high paying part time jobs for young women. I developed a real respect for them and the job, though my opinion of some of the men involved was less favorable.
As much as I appreciate the female body, which is a good thing considering that's all I see all day, I don't see myself venturing into clubs again anytime soon, as I would probably run into all of my patients!
Feel free to post or email me with any health questions.
    Take care

I am not monogomous right now, so my method would be condoms with spermicide. I have never had one break on me, but I have gotten pregnant while being on the pill and with spermicide alone.

If they complain, I won't sleep with them. Long live my days of playing the field...safely.

Not to be picky but the failure rate of tubal ligation has been reported as low as 1.4/1000 (99.86% effective) to as high as 50/1000 (95% effective). All patients should be cautioned that if they miss their period or suspect they might be pregant due to symptoms they should get a preg test immediately, due to high likelihood that it might be an ectopic or tubal pregnancy, which can be life threatening.

tell me about it ! I've had TWO ectopics, which I'm told is a million to one shot ! I'm extremely surprised to hear of the 50/1000 pregnancy rate study with tubal ligation also - that's twice as bad as any "serious" birth control methods (not counting rhythm or other "hope and pray" methods).

The 5% failure is clearly the high extreme, but I think 0.5% is probably reasonable for properly done tubals. I see a patient in the ER with a failed tubal and usually an ectopic about once or twice a year, so that sounds about right. Knock on wood but none of the patients I have done a tubal on have had a failure, yet. I am currently using Filshie clips which I feel have an excellent track record and seem to cause less chronic pain than cautery (burning) or rings/bands.
The new Essure method leaves a permanent plug inside the tube, and for various reasons should have a lower ectopic rate that traditional methods.
    My current favorite methods are
    1) Mirena - easy, long term, reversible
    2) OrthoEvra patch - like the pill with less side effects and easier to remember
    3) Essure - permanent, irreversible, no incisions, high patient satisfaction

I take Desogen they are birth control pills and I have been taking them since I was a teen. Never had a problem with it so far. No weigh gain I can see. It would be eaiser I suppose to take the shot but I heard about the weight gain and more importantly it may contribute to depression more. Which I am taking Paxil for and would probably aggrivate my depression more. So I will stick to the pill. I am really glad I quit smoking though. If you take the pill and you smoke you have a higher risk of devloping blood clots which are very dangerous. So be careful girls!
