    Default Bacterial Vaginosis

Ugh! I get recurrent bacterial vaginosis infections (causes fishy vaginal odor). I hate this!!!!! I think this is the worst problem to have as a dancer.

Does anyone get these? Have any prevention strategies/home remedies to share?

I douche with peroxide to make the odor go away temporarily, but ultimately I have to get prescription medicne to cure it. I sometimes get a prescription for Cleocin which is about $80, OR Flagyl, which is only $15, but with Flagyl, I can't drink alcohol for 12 days.

I just feel so gross! Any words of advice/support would be great. Thanks.

Yes being bacterial, you do need antibiotics. And you say you take them, good.
Best bet while recieving treatment is to NOT douche, or have sex (gosh i know).. If you can, go with out panties. let the area breath.
Also in combination with your antibiotic ask if you can use the cream insert too. Also almost like a yeast infection, you have too much of the bad bacteria. It would help alot to eat lots of plain yogurt too! You need to get your good bacteria level back up, and kill off the bad bacteria levels, which the antibiotic will do. Some women get this off and on seems like all their lives.

Keep the area dry, and eat yogurt, this is not much different than a yeast infection, in the way of getting good bacteria back. Only with this you need your antibiotics to kill the bacteria. What sucks antibiotics also kill good bacteria.
Eat YOGURT through treatment! Keep in mind the IUD also increases your risk of getting this pesky BV too. Keep every thing out of your vagina until you combat this! You will!
    Good luck. Pamela

God I get them a lot too-aren't they horrible!? Never got them to the degree I do now when I wasn't dancing. Most likely due to wearing thongs all the time (no real way to get around that though) at least from what my Dr. says-who knows... Pamela has some excellent advice. You should definitely avoid douching-that is never good. I get a prescription from my Dr. and keep it on hand.

So, do you use Cleocin or Flagyl? I think that for me, not only the thongs, but tampons irritate it. I often wear tampons even if I'm not on my period, just to keep discharge from getting on the thongs. Do most girls wear tampons all the time? Thanks for the advice. I do eat yogurt and take acidopholus supplements.

Tampons when not on your period is only going to increase your chances of thee infection reoccuring......
Like Pamela stated the area needs to breathe, yes you still have your thong on while working, at least it can breathe a little better without a tampon....
I think replacing thongs often also helps, we work up a sweat when we work, and using the same thongs over and over can't help........

i think you found your culprit, the off period tampon use. tampons can irratate you inside if you arent on your period. that is a big no no

Avoid douching (douching is BAD!), and feminine spray products. Change g-strings and underwear frequently. Limit tampon use (only when at the club and only when you are on your period). Also, if you have a SO (significant other) they may be reinfecting you. Ask your doctor for a prescription of Flagyl for them also.

When I first started working my girl friend told me that she wears tampons even when she doesn't have her period. She wears them when she works to absorb any discharge. She was telling me to do the same thing. I don't want to but I think it's embarassing when I'm changing out of a clean thong after on set and I can see a little discharge expecially when it's a black one. But I rather be embarrased because of that than have recurrent UTI's and bacterial vaginosis. She get's both.

when you're not working, switch to all cotton drawers, and by all means absolutely no thongs outside of work, at least until you get this in check. it's not too sexy, but i'd rather be more demure, healthy, and fresh than look sexy, but be sick and stinky. and i can't help to reitterate what has been said before. dont douche under any circumstances, except under the express direction of a gynecologist (i would even trust a general practitioner if he told me to douche, that serious) and for the love of pete, if you are gonna douche anyway use a mild vinegar and water, never peroxide (ouch ouch ouch) be good to your goodies and they be good to you

douching with peroxide? OH MY! Peroxide can cause tissue death, I just cant see this helping at all.

Take your thongs home every night to wash for the next day.

The yoghurt idea is tried and true. Apparantly you can also douche with it - diluted of course and only pure and natural.

Sometime antibiotics aggravate infections too - such a catch 22 huh?

I really dont agree with wearing a tampon without being on your period. It just cant be healthy - and I would worry toxic shock syndrome from such frequent use.

Rethink any of your personal products - even your laundry detergent maybe aggravating the issue, your soap may have too many additives and or perfume...or bubble bath. Try a soap free cleanser...for your cookie.

Yah and those cotton undies - absolutely. Thats all I wear - they do make regular cotton thongs to wear on your own time too so you dont have to wear those dumpy bum panties hee hee!

Hope your kitty feels better soon!

Oh Girl! I understand your issue! I had that thing a looooong time a go and I tried some many thing from antibiotics to creams and nothing worked. My physician finally, after a year, decided to try her last resort which was a vaginal cream called Clindamycin and low and behold it worked! I had that infection two and used the Clindamycin both times. My physician told me that it was a sexually transmitted infection and that I should have my bf (unfortunately he was sleeping with someone else and contracted from her) treated as well. So ask your physician to prescribe it for you as soon as possible.
    Good Luck!

Thanks for all the advice. Just to clarify though, I used the peroxide only after reading about studies that have focused on this as a treatment fo BV (which is caused by anerobic bacteria, meaning oxygen kills them, and peroxide produces oxygen.) I don't douche with anything else. And my husband has been treated with Flagyl and they're still recurrent. I guess I'm going to be more adament about avoiding thongs and tampons and see if that helps.

    Anais-
I really suggest that you ask your physician about Clindamycin and maybe it might be recommended for your husband as well. I tried Flagyl both times and it didn't help. As with thongs, I think that as long as their cotton fabric its okay to wear them. Tampons are a different story, I never use them because I think that the natural flow of the menstral cycle wasn't to be held back by a tampon. Sounds corny, but I always use pads and I haven't had an issues with infections. I know frustrating it was to deal with an infection that has an odor but you can always smell it which you think that others can too. And that can be embarassing! So ask your physician about getting your husband and yourself treated with Clindamycin. If your wondering men can use a vaginal cream the answer is "yes". My husband uses uses a yeast cream that is inserted in the penis because he is uncircumcised(sp?) and he sometimes gets yeast infections.

I think that Clindamycin is the same as Cleocin. I wonder if it is possible to drink while taking metronidazole? A dancer at work says that she drinks while taking it. Doctor and pharmacist say you will be violently ill if it is mixed with alcohol. Anyone know?

    In refererence to Anais' question:
Yes,Metronidazole is the generic equivalent of Flagyl which means you cannot drink when taking them either. I am a certified pharmacy technician so I can go further into detail if you like.

So. what happens if you do drink while taking it? Just curious. Will it just make the med less effective or make you really sick? I've heard that the composition is similar to antabuse.

I took my meds. Infection is better. For the past few days I've been going without tampons at work and its not as bad as I thought. If I get discharge on my panties, I just change, which is probably a good thing anyway, to keep changing. I hope it doesn't come back, but who knows.

I don't know if I talked it up or what but I visited my doctor on thursday and I too was suffering my first case of BV. I was given metronidazole (4 tablets to be taken all at once) and it cleared up by the end of the next day.

Basically what may happen if you drink while using them is severe nausea (maybe vomitting), it can even alter the taste of the alcohol. I also noticed that when I took it, it caused stomach cramps and diarrhea (only lasted for about an hour the next morning after taking them).
I also noticed that they dissolve in your mouth when you begin to swallow them. THEY TASTE TERRIBLE!!

Hmmm. Maybe I need to talk to my doc about dosage. he always prescribes 10 days, 3 times a day. All at once would be great! Yeah, they taste so awful, I am always afraid I will vomit them back up. Sometimes, I plop it on a spoonful of applesauce and swallow quick so it never touches your tounge.

Yeah you really need to ask him to use the larger strength tablets. That way you can get it over with. The only problem with recurrent infections is that you need to have a steady amount of the meds in your system until the end of treatment. That's probably why your doctor chooses for you to take several doses at around the same time each day.

Well..I used to work for a gynecologist..and you should microwave your CLEAN undies before you wear them..the heat will kill any bacteria that may be lurking!! also..you can actually put yogurt right on your kitty..to stimulate the good bacteria..take alot of HOT baths and walk around naked ofetn..to get the air flowing..lol ..also if you chill on the alcohol that will also help..hope you feel better soon

I'm not an expert; but over the years I've read quite a few books on women's reproductive health. I decided to do some research online tonight, since I'm out of work this week spending quality time with old Aunt Flo, because some advice given here contradicted what I've read.

nylon underwear and panty hose or tight fitting clothing close off the air spaces that normally ventilate the genital area, causing these areas to stay moist and warm, a perfect climate for the growth of yeast infections.

Obviously, warm microwaved panties, clean or not, will cause your vagina to become warm and moist. Even I know that using heat as a way to kill bacteria, in and around, the vagina is impractical as you'd have to burn the bitch off in order to get it all. IMO, very bad advice Hiawatha, you said you worked for a gynecologist so what did you do...sweep the office floors? Besides, who says "gynecologist" in that field anyway, don't they use the term OBGYN?

Anyway, I found many articles with great advice for avoiding recurring BV:

    -Avoid douching.
-Avoid perfumed soaps and feminine hygiene sprays.
    -Wipe front to back.
    -Avoid tight HOT clothing.
-Don't spray perfume or body spray around vagina
(we see this all the time at work)

LOL Naomi - using the term gynocologist may just be a regional thing, I never say OBGYN, either. Kinda like when people say pass me my cigarettes - in Canada we say pass me my 'smokes', LOLOL!!!

    Different terminolgy.

I imagine you could shake the heat off your ginch before putting on your hot microwaved panties, although I am gonna say right now I AINT microwaving my damn underwear anyway LMAO!

I have heard as well blow-drying your puss, after a bath or shower, not putting panties on directly after a bath, letting all your little lady folds dry inside and out helps. Not locking in the dampness from your bath kinda thing.

Yeah Leigh, blow drying is much more effective because it dries it rather than trapping in the humidity.

We all say gynecologist, but people in the biz say OBGYN and she said she was in the biz. LMAO too

    p.s. fancy a fag?
