I'm so in love with my personal trainer! She's awesome. She's designed three general workouts for me and gone through all three sessions, except for the warmup and cool downs. Now, I get with her about once a week to work on specific problem areas or just to be pushed to a new limit. No matter what, she stays with me for the whole workout. Last week's session, she said I needed to do some more endurace work, so we got on our bicycles and rode thirty miles. Now she has me doing 30+ mile rides once a week, and she has me biking to the club for my workouts.
I abhor the personal trainer scam present in so many gyms. Your story is NOT unique.
Tell your trainer you will do your cardio BEFORE (or after) your paid hour starts THANK YOU VERY MUCH, because you expect his/her attention for the full paid hour.
No one should be on the clock getting paid while you are doing cardio...thats straight up bullshit.

Never explain yourself to anyone, because the person who likes you doesn't need it and the person that dislikes you won't believe it.
Like Leigh said, bullshit.
A good personal trainer will stay with you, and spot you, explain machines to you, take your blood pressure before, while in the middle of your target heart zone, and after 15 minutes of your session.
I have not had one, but gone with an ex to watch him workout. He had a personal trainer that was getting paid alot of money, and seemed worth every penny to me.
He went as far as stretches, explaining how the body works.
The best part for his clients was, he talked while training, so you are not paying for talk time only.
He took notes, and gave a copy if needed. This is at a pro health and fitness center so i a not sure if all persoanl trainers go that far, but it would be nice for $1000 !!!

How the heck did he manage to sign you up for $1000. ? Usually when you join a gym they provide a personal trainer for the first visit. Only if you think their services are worth it do you choose to employ them. Tell me, what did you say were your fitness goals? What plan did he submit to you as to help you attain them? I wouldn't pay some trainer $1K unless they can make me an olympic gold medalist.
Shop around next time. I'm sure there are plenty more reasonable trainers. Check their credentials. They should be certified at minimal.

im going to break the contract tomorrow. The contract said that i have three days to break it without penalty and he just really pissed me off again today. i came in the gym and he told me i should warm up....he hollered this to me from the top of the stairs....and didnt even come to great me. then he was off doing his own thing for 10 minutes. even if i am doing cardio he needs to be right there with me so that i dont get off the machine, ya know? i am paying him for the encouragemnt... the gym did let me meet with him for free for the first 2 times,,,,,,but as soon as a signe dthat contract everything changed.wont he be in for a fucking surprise. excuse my language but i dont like being taken advantage...cause im young,,,or whatever and it looks like i have the money to waste.I DO NOT HAVE MONEY TO WASTE i am trying to invest in my career so that i look better...i will let you all know how it goes when i cancel. I KNOW thatthey will give me a hard time. i gave the guy 2 chances and if he acts like this now- i know it wont get better in the next 2 months.

good for you - just be cool and calm and keep reiterating that you dont feel it is working out. They will try to conteract everything you say but just remain calm and say its just NOT working out.
They will probably say you arent giving it a chance and you can just explain you dont think its what you were looking for - BE FIRM.
Thousand dollars, that prick better be making me a protein shake, rubbing my sore shoulders and kissing my rosy red ass....LOL, kidding but for real, this isnt what you were lookin for and his coaching efforts leave much to be desired.
Float around in your gym a bit and watch and learn, you'd be surprised how helpful other members can be in a gym - free of charge. There are tons of magazines with workouts and methods and diets, the internet is loaded with info too.
Wishing you the best of luck!!!

what a dickhead. you should absolutely have 100% of his full attention for the entire hour that you paid for him. i've been scammed before just the same exact way.
my advice is to learn about exercise, weight lifting, cardio, and just fitness in general; this way you will know exactly what to do, without having to pay someone to tell you the tricks. it's so easy to find fitness information- read fitness magazines, look stuff up online, work out with someone that is knowledgeable about fitness. after i got scammed by a trainer, that's what i did.

Hmmm sounds like 24 Hour Fitness to me.
madgrad LOL no trust me its not just 24 hr fitness...I work out at BALLYS and they have the same problem. Sometimes i would see a personal TRAINER out of shape , and all they do is flirt or talk shit. I personally would choose a trainer that is in shape and does things PAMELA described.
One more thing though, if its about attention I dont think you are going to go far. You need to have your OWN encouragement , nobody else can do things for you. Just cancel the contact and motivate yourself , get to know the trainers and hopefully you ll choose somebody you trust your body.
I had same problem before, I wanted 100 % attention, but they are not our slaves they are trainers and yes they should pay attention to us but not as much as we expect.
This is just my personal opinion.
I hope u r fine.
Have fun

Thats hilarious - SexyBooty - yes in fact you ARE entitled to his undivided attention...that is the entire POINT, especially at a thousand dollar sign up - plus the gym's membership fees.
It isnt JUST about attention but instruction guidance AND motivation - as one is PAYING for that.
She never said anything about anybody doing anything *FOR* her - she was pissed that his attention was elsewhere while he was on the clock; on her dollar.
Including instructing her to do cardio while he was getting paid - again straight up bullshit - any trainer worth his salt would never have you do your cardio while he gets paid for instruction and guidance.
ANd if you accept that from a trainer - you are selling yourself short - and paying too much.
Cardio should be done prior to a workout (as I do to warm up my muscles and get my heart rate up) or after the training is complete.
And never, never, NEVER should cardio be on the clock.
Again I laughed at your comment that trainers arent slaves - no they arent and where you got that idea from is beyond me but they ARE paid to perform a service - and they arent doing jack shit while their client is doing cardio so then shouldnt be paid for that time - an idea would be that before your session begins to have already done your cardio. So when he goes to send you off and away so he gets his paid break from you - you can laugh and say uh NOPE cardio's been done lets keep up with the training process thank you.
I guess we can use this as a heads up to anyone getting a personal trainer be sure to have the entire hour of training spelled out to you in fact get the fella to put in on paper - and make mention that you would like to know his stand on cardio - will he be including this into the hour he is charging if you only get 30 minutes of instruction and the remaining 30 on mindless cardio? Thereby he should only be getting 30 minutes of pay.
