    Default Shoes!!!

Hi all! Let me start by saying that I LOVE this forum, you girls (and guys) are extremely informative!

I'm seriously considering getting into the stripping business, but I am first learning all I can about it, checking out clubs, getting my body in shape, and trying to get used to the SHOES!!!! I have a friend who is a veteran stripper, and she lent me a couple pairs of her 6" platform sandals. I'm slowly getting better walking around in them, but I'm still REALLY wobbly, and I can't even FATHOM dancing like you girls dance in them! Any pointers on how to get used to them? Thanx!!!

    Chi Autumn,

I think its a great idea that you are doing your homework before starting to dance when I started I did no research at all fortunately I was lead by my sister. As far as the shoes go I don't think its mandatory in clubs to wear 6" heels so I would start out with something a little shorter 3.5"- 4" they also look and then you could work your way up to a taller heel.

Also shoes are designed with lost of different heel designs so maybe even try a cone heel or a thicker heeled shoe.

    Good Luck,
    Tori

    Hi Autumn I echo's Tori's thoughts-it's great that you're doing your research!

I also echo her thoughts on "working up" to heel/platform size. When I first started dancing, I started in 4" heels and eventually moved into platforms. Even now, after dancing several years, I still prefer to dance in 5" heels with a one inch platform. I find them very comfortable (still only having a 4" arch) and definitely find them much easier for me to dance in. I have a few 6" platforms, but tend to just walk the floor in them. I dance on my toes a lot-where the 2" platforms can be a nightmare for me.

    Good luck!

When I am breaking in new shoes, I try wearing them several times as I vacuum my entire house. It forces me to work on my balance (balancing on carpet is ickier than balancing on stage), helps break the shoes in for the shape of my feet, and gets me used to the feel. i do have a distinct preference for boots, though - thigh-high, knee-high, calf-high, ankle-high.... They provide me with greater ankle support and general stability. That means I can move much more quickly and with greater coordination. Usually wear a 6" heeled boot, with a 2" platform and it took no time to get used to them!

And I have to agree with everyone else - do your research. Too many girls don't.

I'll admit, McCain, that visual of you vacuuming the house in 6-in plattforms is classic! And I thought *I* was odd for cleaning the house wearing only socks!

Unfortunately, our club doesn't let us wear boots, as we're a gown-club - but it's true that they offer the best support. Another thing that might be good would be to buy your own pair, Autumn. When I was thinking about dancing, I borrowed a friend's pair (like you have) and at the time I didn't realize that the insoles had become shaped to the owner's foot - so they fit me quite differently than they fit her. Once I had gotten my own pair, it was much easier to balance and get used to. Also, depending on how old the pair is that your borrowing, the soles can be a bit rounded and more worn, so it's easier to slip. (uhh, I sort of found this out first-hand - thankfully not on stage) While your friend might be used to the soles and the feel of the shoe, you are not, and it's harder to adjust.

Tia also has a good point- working yourself up in height. Depending on the club and it's min heel requirements, just wear the min and work your way up. Before you know it, you'll be running around with the 7" crazy-ass heels that even I won't wear without insurance!

    Good luck

    Check out

    http://www.stripper-faq.org/

Great site for dancers just starting out, and even for dancers that have been dancing for a while. I like to reread a lot of the stuff that is on that site every so often. Helps keep me on track.

If you can wear boots at the club you are planning on working in, I would suggest you look into these from Hot Topic:
They are only $43 and they work well for me. They are very, very comfortable and I hardly even notice I'm wearing a heel.
I have gotten used to the 6" platform heels but on some nights when I don't want to worry about my feet giving out on me halfway through the night, I go with boots.

You guys are awesome, thank you SOOO much for the advice!!!

You are right NYCjacqueline, my friend said that the shoes she let me borrow were her favorite shoes when she was starting out, and she loved to wear them because they were so comfortable for her... So, they HAVE been worn quite a bit, and they HAVE obviously comformed to her feet... So, I think I will shop for a pair of 4" heels of my own to practice in! Vacuuming the house in stripper shoes - oh my boyfriend is going to LOVE this!

Thanks for the FAQ site, Candice, very helpful stuff!

If you will be working in a club that has contact dances, I recommend slip on/slip off platforms like these:

Many dancers take off their shoes to do lap dances, and these shoes make it a lot easier, rather than fussing with buckles and such.

One of the main things I have found made a difference in shoes is the soles. I was intimidated at first too of getting on stage in heels and making a fool of myself. But if you have a sole that slides (you dont want anything too slippery mind you lol) on the stage and on the tip toe has a flat part where the sole comes up towards the toes, it really makes it easier than you would think to twirl around and look graceful on stage. I agree with everyones advice, start with the lower heels and do alot of practicing just walking around in them and i practiced how the stage would feel by twirling around on my bathroom linoleum floor, kind of gives you an idea of what to expect the stage to be like.
    Good luck

Most of you seem to wear platforms. Is there a way to dance in highheeled shoes without plats? I like five inch heels with stiletto heels, preferably boots.

to be honest, it's easier to dance in heels with a platform than heels without.
when you have 6" heels with a 2" platform, you're essentially only wearing 4" heels - if you get my drift.
    therefore - 5" heels with a 1" platform = 3" heels...
your feet are on less of an angle than if you were to wear 5" or 6" heels without any platform.

wow, maths even comes in handy for strippers!

    Thank you, minky,
I appreciate your information, but I think, plats don't look very sexy. I am used to wear very high heels, but to dance with them seems to be more difficult than i expected. Is there another way to get more practice or to select other methods?

I agree about plats not looking so sexy. I auditioned in normal non plats and have stuck with them since. it gives me a slightly different look which I think helps when I am walking the floor. Getting used to dancing in them takes time even if you are used to very high heels. I started with 5 inch ones and my feet would be killing me by the end of a shift. It gets easier after a few weeks. I wear 5 1/2" or 6" ones now but that is after a year dancing. I dont know about all the maths but your feet are at a steeper angle so you do need to be really flexible and have strong calves.

autumn I see you're just like me...doing some research before starting in the buisiness!

about the shoes....just practice, practice practice! like you and others already said wear them around the house a lot (not too much, watch your back)

get your own pair instead of using your friends

make sure they fit you well (not too big or too small)

buy something to put on the bottom of the shoes to prevent you from slipping on stage

good luck girl! (if you wanna talk sometime...just let me know)
