Default Getting back in shape :-(

I know, I should have just stayed in shape to begin with...

Anyways, I took about three months off dancing, and wasn't intending to return to dancing so I stopped working out (dropped my gym membership and just did cardio around the house) and being obsessive about what I eat. I was ten pounds or so overweight when I stopped dancing, but I was also very muscular.

In the three months that I wasn't dancing I lost about ten pounds. Mostly muscle, but some fat too (judging by the mirror).

I started dancing again and I am now watching my food more. I'm hypoglocemic, so I eat six times a day anyways, and no sugar, but now I'm doing the very little carb thing and smaller portions too. I do half an hour of cardio four or five days a week.

And, I've gained about ten pounds. And it's not muscle. :-(

Where did it come from? What am I doing wrong? Help!

I know most advocate dropping all carbs to lose weight, but in order to do that, you typically have to up your fat intake. Have you done the no/low-carb diet before?? Did you have good results previously? I know when I tried it, I ended up gaining some weight as a result of the extra fat intake. It seems to me, that it all really depends on your own body chemistry. Not every plan works for everyone. Don't get me wrong, I still don't go crazy with the carbs. I do try to limit both fat and carbs while increasing the protein, but I definitely watch fat more than carbs. Sugar is a bad carb which definitely needs to be kept in check, yes - but, as you said, you typically don't eat sugars anyhow. If I were you, I'd start watching my fat intake more. Has it increased recently? Saturated fat will cause more harm than fiber would, for example. If you have been upping your fat intake, that could be a reason for the sudden weight gain. Just a thought, but then again I'm no expert. I hope that helps somewhat. Good luck!

    Anabolic,

I usually eat tuna for breakfast, then steak and salad, then the other half of the steak (sometimes with veggies), then either yogurt or a glass of milk with something light. A few days a week I stop on the way to work and have a salad and chili at Wendy's, otherwise I have a pack of peanuts part way through my shift. I drink water all day and water at work, with the occasional glass of OJ if I get dizzy.

Lena, you should be doing the low fat , high carb thing. Your body needs carbs for fuel. You're doing the right thing by avoiding the high glycemic foods like sugar, honey, and sweet corn. Eat more fresh fruits.
It wouldn't hurt to do light weights like in a powerflex class.

your breakfast should be a whey protein isolate shake with oatmeal and a banana mixed in water-red meat once a day is fine with a sweet potato-do not have milk or any dairy products and the water is great-I'd eliminate the chili and have a skinless chicken breast instead-if you need more help, just ask

Anabolic, you rock. Don't you have a site with all of your fitness and diet tips? I thought I've seen it before, but I forgot where it was.....I loved it when I visited. Perhaps you could post it?

if possible you should cook your food the nite before and take it in tupperware with you-skinless boneless chicken breasts, you could microwave a sweet potato for 10 minutes and eat that with the chicken. as I said in a previous post, the best breakfast would be a whey protein isolate shake with water and a banana and 2 packs of quaker oatmeal. you could probably have red meat a few times a week. Of course you should lift as often as possible and do a little cardio-if you have more questions, just ask
