    Default Colposcopy

Has anyone ever had this done? I got good news in the mail from my Gyno the other day saying I needed to come in for further testing from an abnormal Pap Smear. Something about cell growth. In case you can't tell, I'm oozing with sarcasm. I'm a little bit nervous. Apparently they only schedule these types of tests 1-2 a month and my appt. isn't until July 21. Anyone here know anything about this or heard of it?

This is where the doc. goes in to look at the cervix. with an instrument called a colposcop (spelling). I hear a little uncomfortable, (stay lose). But does not hurt. The doc inserts some type of acid inside the cervix. With the acid making cells and such being more visible, and the instrument making its way in deep and getting a clear view, the doc. can see if any abnormalities are there.

This does not mean you have cancer. You could just be irritated, or an infection inside.

It is pretty routine today, and much better than a regular pap. Better results.

You should plan not to work that day, just in case. If they see abnormalities with the colposcope (sp?), they will want to do a biopsy for further investigation. I had this done and the bleeding was pretty heavy - they packed me with gauze and sent me home, but if I remember correctly I wasn't allowed to use tampons right afterwards due to risk of infection.

Just wanted to say that I had this done too! I was so scared and worried at first. They even took 2 biopsy samples. I was scheduled to work that night, because I was told that it would be no big deal. I was sore and bleeding from the biopsies they took. But it's not too bad and my results were good. I wound up calling out that night needless to say.

I had this done too, I was also very scared, but I did not bleed, it was uncomfortable, but I did not experience any pain. It might actually depend on the doctor, if you get a good doctor or one that treats you like just another patient. Hope this helps.

this is probably a no-brainer for everyone else... but don't let them tell you that just because you've had an abnormal pap that you have HPV (the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer) as Pamela stated before it is much more likely to be and irritation, infection, or sex the day before the pap test. I was told that I had HPV 2 years ago, by the good old folks at my local planned parenthood, but it was disproved by the once every 3 month pap tests i got for a year ( second opinion from a "regular" doctor. ) everthing turned out in the end, but going to the gyno that often really got to me after awhile. so yeah, try to remember to bring ibuprophen or aleve if you can take any of those, if all gyno's were humane they would offer either one of these or a mild sedative for this procedure, but not all do.

i had this procedure done a few times, then had to go to the next step which is called a LLETZ treatment, where they remove the abnormal area. it's kinda scary and i bled for about three weeks after - and you CAN'T use tampons or have sex for at least four weeks.
(had it done two weeks before my wedding so i was out of action on my honeymoon!)
it's ok though, the nurses were really nice.
