    Default Pearly whites...

Any tried & true opinions on the best teeth whitening systems out there? I've never used anything, though about 2 years ago my bf tried the Crest strips. He said they only lasted for a few weeks at best. There are just too many products that one doesn't know where to start - and why spend the money on something w/o getting some opinions first?

I have tried them too. They did work some, and cost more money to keep my teeth white, because i had to keep buying the box over and over. So then i came home and tried (a friend told me) a mix of small amount of baking soda and peroxide. Let is sit for a minute. Then wash my teeth. Now that worked. But i found everyday peroxide in the mouth in that strength is not good, also my gums were raw. What the hell was i thinking. Tried ALL over the counter tooth pastes that "claim" to whiten, and i am sure if i did not use them daily i would have stains on my teeth. However my end result, i go for a bleaching (or have rather), by my dentist. Talk about blasting my teeth white!!! But you have to keep up with that avery couple weeks. My teeth are white, i just now and again use the peroxide, baking soda trick, and twice a day, use a whitening toothpaste. Right now i am on the Rembrandt with peroxide whitening kick. If you really want WHITE teeth...the dentist can make them VERY white. Pamela

yes, it is worth getting it done by a dentist.

Your teeth will be unbelievable....look beautiful! And, they will usually stay that way for years if you are regular about cleanings, or use a whitening toothpaste

When I was in high school & college I'd have the whitening done, but during that time, my mom's insurance covered it! Here in NY, it's an absurd amt of money for a really good long lasting job. I do occasionally use baking soda & peroxide , though (yuk, it's disgusting!)... I think I'll just skip to that and ignore all the whitening strip hype, then....

I'm always open to more suggestions, though - so if anyone else has tried anything worth it, lemme know!

I've used alot of different whitening systems over the years. The worst in my opinion was the Crest WhiteStrips. The didn't stay on very well and the effects were minimal. The best I've used was called White. It is sold at Sally Beauty Supply. It is a gel and tray system. Although it's a little cumbersome to use, as you should have to keep the tray in for a few hours at a time, it yields the best results. I have found it easiest to wear the tray when I go to bed. It interferes with life less that way.
The kit is on sale at Sally's right now for $29 I believe. Sally's also sells individual refill tubes of gel, which is really nice, so if you want to whiten again, you don't have to buy the whole kit. I belive the gel tubes are $12 or $14.
Also, I would only use the trays every other day at first because the gel can create a little tooth sensitivity initially.

Forever White. It's a gel/tray system but only needs to be worn for about 1/2 hour. The trays are foam (a lot easier to wear) and come pre-filled. One kit is for 5 days. I was very impressed with how well it worked. From what I remember, the cost was $40.00. I ordered it online. (I think one site was even running a buy one get one free special..)

I was due for a new dental cap (front tooth none the less) and figured since you can bleach teeth, but not porcelain caps, I decided I would whiten my teeth before getting the new cap. I figured it was a lot better to match it to whiter teeth than dingier ones. When it came time for the cap-the dentist commented on how white my teeth were, and actually had some difficulty matching it... lol

Actually, I saw on the news and in consumer reports that the little stuff that you paint on that retails for $9.99 or $14.99 that is I believe made by Crest, though I may be wrong, actually works to lighten four to six shades which makes a visible difference. Most stuff only lightens two to three shades which isn't really noticeable.

NYCJac. I am obsessed with white teeth . But my dentist told me that I can go to any dental school and get it done real cheap. But if you don't want to do that here is a product for you:

    http://www.gosmile.com/

It a whitening serum that works wonders. It's actually made by a NYC dentist and they sell it in Henri Bendel. Its a little pricey but SOOO worth it. By the way any luck finding hair refresheners? I replied to that thread also.

I had my teeth Veneered. The top ten teeth, laser gum surgey (to reshape my teeth) and veneers to super bathroom tile white(en) them and widen my smile. They never stain or change shades at all. I purchased an entirely new smile for the low low price of $15,000. I'm not crazy, I just believe teeth are the most beautiful part of a human. (its a fetish actually )

NYCJ, have you tried BriteSmile on 57th st? They have a website, I think www.britesmile.com. It's $500 for complete whitening, upper and lower.

For semi-permanent topermanent results, talk toyour dentist.

For inexpensive at-home results, I personally have had goodluck with the Crest WhiteStrips. However, I find that the results do not last long if I smoke or drink coofee or sodas - in other words, things that stain teeth. It's been about 5 months since the last time I used them, and there has been little return discoloration during that time, because I essentially quit smoking, and I rarely drink coffee or soda.

I believe the paint-on stuff that Divyne mentioned is the Colgate system that is now heavily advertised on TV.

Also, if you smoke, TarGon mouthwash works well to remove tar and prevent stains (although it tastes like hell - I always followed it up with CoolMint Listerine to kill the taste). As for toothpaste, I agree with the baking soda-peroxide combo.

Last but not least, the right shade of red lipstick can do wonders for making your teeth look whiter - try for something with a blue undertone, as yellow or orange undertones can make teeth look more discolored.

None really pop out at me at the moment. But be on the lookout for teeth whitening systems with really "quick" results. Alot of these systems have ingredients so harsh, that they are actually stripping your nail enamel. Over time, that can lead to teeth sensitivity.

If you want a PERMANENT improvement think about having Veneers done on your front teeth. Not only does this whiten them but it also corrects any small irregularities in the shape or spacing of your teeth. It's a two step deal where the first go-round gets your own teeth ready (and you leave with a temporary Veneer), and a second go-round where your permanent made to order Veneer is permanently installed. Mine cost about 2 grand for top and bottom front teeth. Since I smoke and drink coffee, the Veneers have permanently cured my yellow teeth syndrome.

Yep, only your dentist can give you very white teeth. he/she blasts easily on the teeth themselves, but not hard enough to hurt the enamel. It's actually a hard cleaning witha different product done every so often. Uncomfortable at first, but i loved the results.
And veneers are great. My teeth are fine so i don't want them messed with, just whitened every now and again. To keep my teeth stain free between bleaching, i mix a bit of peroxide and baking soda. And scrub lightly. Not too often however. Foamy, and not good if swalowed. LOl.

For everyone who want to know how to get really white teeth without spending a ton ... talk to a dentist (or even a hygenist, maybe they can hook you up) about the teeth bleech that they use, only, not the molds they make for your teeth (unless your teeth are somewhat croocked) but the dentists get the bleech for about $20 (unsure of how much it will cost you probably $40, I get it for free from my sister who is dentist) and which lasts about 5 months ... you'll only need about 2 packs in a year ... but here is the real money saver, go buy football mouthgards and mold them to your teeth ... works just as well, a little less comfortable but gets your teeth perfectly white VERY fast. I get compliments on my teeth all the time now that they are as white as paper.

Crest Night Effects - a paint-on, used for 14 days at night-time. I used it about 2 months ago and it was awesome! Easy to use & convenient, didn't make my teeth sensitive and got rid of all these nasty dark brown stains I had on the backs of my teeth from smoking & coffee. Can be used every 6 months. Pretty inexpensive, less than $15 at Wal-mart.

I went to my dentist for a cleaning and got the mold & kit for free! Check around for cleaning deals from local dentists. Everyone needs a cleaning right?

However it makes me sensitive the next day.
