    Default Merkins

Anybody heard of merkins (pubic wigs)? I'm doing an article for Playgirl and need any info you've got on them. An actor buddy of mine said some actresses used to wear them so they wouldn't reveal their real body parts to the public. Probably cheaper to wear a merkin than to pay a body double. But I also heard that some dancers wear them in clubs where the law prevents them from dancing totally nude. Anybody hear of this?

    Any information is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    This is funny .
I always wondered if any of the dancers in Atlanta wore them, since they aren't allowed to be completely shaved. Can you imagine pulling out the eyelash adhesive and pasting a tiny little wig down there? Ouch!

Merkins, as I understand, were originally developed in more medieval times when lice were more prevalent. If a woman shaved her pubic hair to help rid herself of lice, she might wear a merkin so she looked "normal" for her husband or keeper or attendants, whatever, and so her lice problem wasn't obvious. Times change.

There was a movie in the 1960s called, "Can Heironymus Merkin ever forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" Always loved that title.

There was another movie, "Dr. Strangelove," from those times where Peter Sellers played the role of President Merkin Muffley. The sixties had fun with that word.

I've also heard of "Merkin" being a slang and satirical term for "American" in other parts of the globe.

I don't know of anything specific about dancers or actresses wearing them, sorry.

I know, it's such a goofy sounding word, and people around the world are calling us by this name. It's funny but insulting at the same time. I've found quite a bit of history on it, but nobody seems to agree on much other than the lice and the bit about covering syphilis sores in the early 14th (or 17th) centuries, depending on who you want to believe. But there are some places that sell them; I just can find them!
