    Default About the IUD

Please please if anyone here has had good results with the IUD i need to know. I am thinking about having one put in.
I know nothing of these objects, except they do work ?

I can't have any other alternatives except to have my tubes tied. That is scary. Surgery....never had it yet.

Need info on the IUD, please.

I don't want to start a discussion here, but I my doctor refuses to do them. They're basically like a mini-abortion... stopping any implantation.... That kind of bugged me, but if you don't mind that, then go for it. Sometimes they don't work though, it's rare.... but I know a couple girls who had one when they got pregnant, then they had to worry about the baby's safety, and go in to get them carefully removed. Other than the negative I really don't know much about them... except they're effective.

I had one - several over the years actually - and they worked amazingly.

ONLY problem is that you can let it slip that you have had it a while and the damn thing can and does grow itself into the wall of your uterus. You are supposed to change them every 3 to 5 years, I had the last one 11 or more years, uh...oops.

It did grow into my uterus and the removal was like no pain I ever felt. My fault though, my gyno was so cool about it and said its not uncommon and I certainly didnt hold the record on that and we laughed, but removal was intensely painful because of that factor.
I didnt put another in to replace it this last time.

I reccomend it, I loved it - I hate the pill, cant remember to take the damn thing plus the whole chemical thing about the pill makes me uneasy.

IUD with regular gyno visits - its the ultimate in freedom.

I had one for 5 years (in fact I only recently had it removed and switched to the nuvaring)

The IUD is great as long as you are in a monogomous relationship. The drawbacks that I experienced were: increased cramping during my period and a much heavier flow. Also you are at an increased risk for ectopic pregnancy.

I liked it but honestly the cramping started to get to be too much for me. It was getting worse (I was having to take muscle relaxers to alleviate the pain) so I had it removed.

Yes I heard about that and wondered, I am an anomoly I suppose my periods run 2 days at best with a mild back ache the day before - the end.
LOL, a box of tampax can last me a year!

If I remember correctly - as I had the IUD inserted the very first time at like 18 (whoa!) my periods back in the day lasted a full week, with 2 days of cramping and a normal flow when compared to other friends information.

I have been IUD free for about 4 or more years and periods are exactly the same. 2 days light flow minimal discomfort, but now PMS? THAT I get! Wooooo doggie I can kick some ass that week prior man, I scare *myself* sometimes. LOL!

You're thinking of Norplant, it's implanted in your arm and lasts like 5 years. Depo is the shot you get every 3 months. I didn't like the shot; I bled forever *yuck* and the doctor told me if I didn't like Depo then I wouldn't like NOrplant.

The IUD is a copper or plastic coil that is inserted into your uterus. They're not entirely sure HOW it works, only that is DOES.

The IUD will not be pushed out of position but you ARE supposed to check once a month for the little string that hangs down. (Your man might feel it mine did) I never checked though I just had the doc check during my yearly exam.

The kind that is implanted into your skin is called Norplant. Six little thingies, about the size of matchsticks I guess, are placed underneath the skin of your upper arm (3 in each arm). I used to always see advertisements for it in magazines but I think that there were some problems with them at one point.

Depo-Provera is a shot that you get, every month I think. But I have heard that it makes your periods super heavy for some women.

The only thing I have ever been on is the pill, it kind of makes me feel sick sometimes (esp. if I forget to take it and have to double up the next day!) but I think that it is the least painful of any of the birth control choices. (And I swear it made my boobs bigger!! )

No i want the IUD that has no bc involved. Some are copper i hear, others plastic. Some release birth control. See i can't take any form of birth control pills/med, because i have tachycardia, with an arrhythmia.

I had the copper 7 - it was shaped like the numeral 7 with a tiny thin copper wrapped around and around the stem.
The presence of something foreign in your uterus cause your uterus to contract to expell it - its natural (hence the cramping for some women) as result your egg-- fertilised or not-- is expelled also.

    I like the trusty pill.
But you have to remember to take it. As long as you are in a routine it works awsome.

actually, I really liked the IUD. Other than being crampy once a month I never knew it was there! The pill I could never remember to take and had to double up all the time. Many cycles I screwed up because I'd forget to take the pill till 3 or 4 days later.

As a side note, Pam, I never had cramps before the IUD but definately got them having the IUD. So if you get bad cramps now, expect them to get worse. Still, I'd try it before surgery. Having it inserted and/or removed is not painful and only takes a minute (literally). Since you work for a hospital I would imagine that cost is definately not a factor.

Sorry to post this here, but I'm on the b/c patch (2nd week now) and my breasts have become very sore over the past 2 days. I've never had this happen before (except when I was pregnant a few years ago). I'm wondering if it's the hormones, the fact I'm soemwhere around mid-cycle, or what. I don't think I'm pregnant cause I had my period and last time I have sex I used the morning after pill just in case. Anyone here used the patch?

I have a Mirena IUD and love it! I cannot take the pill because I have classic migraines (with a visual aura) and ALL birth control pills give me migraines. They also would put me at a higher risk for a stroke or aneurism or something. Now when I first had my IUD inserted, I won't like, it hurt like HELL! I've never had children and I guess my opening isn't that big. I was VERY cramped up for the first day and after that it was bearable. I bled for 3 months straight and then the bleeding pretty much stopped. It was NASTY bleeding too, like my body eliminating everything all icky in there. Now I don't even have periods or even think about it. I love my IUD. Even though it's got the small amount of progestin in it that releases, it doesn't give me migraines because it is a very minute amount and it is directly into my uterus.

Recently it was just determined that having an IUD in place actually helps against HPV the reasons arent known but they said you are 30% less likely to get it

Whelp I wish that would have worked for me but it did not at all. Can you point me to where you read that? I am curious about the mechanism because it doesn't seem possible...

Anyway, I hated both my IUDs. The Mirena made me feel batshit crazy (they say the hormones are only "local" but think about it; these local hormones are close to YOUR organs that make hormones, which causes YOUR hormones to change). The copper one, I cramped and bled so heavily it was ridiculous and ended up with iron deficiency anemia. So condoms it is for me.

Or find a man that has the balls to get snipped. That's my plan

That was my last attempt at BC. That IUD messed with me so badly just like any other hormone-based methods.

Catering to a guy laid up with his balls on a little pillow for 3 days was a much easier thing to handle in the long run.

The copper IUD will definitely make you have cramps. So if you already get them, it'll make them much worse.

I got my copper IUD more than 10 years ago. I've had it for the duration of both of my two long-term relationships. I have not been in a long-term relationship since being in this line of work and living in LA for the majority of it's duration, so the IUD hasn't really served me past it's initial five years in use. I've been told to change the IUD as it's past the 10 year mark, but I'm thinking I might just leave it alone. I've read accounts where ladies have had their IUDs in for 40-50+ years. It's a foreign device. Foreign devices can stay in bodies for decades, without doing any harm.

Also, when I got it, health professionals were anti-IUD unless you've already had a child. The stance was that your uterus is not big enough to hold an iud, hormones are good for you, blah blah blah. I got all sorts of reasons, and got the IUD anyways. I'm not sure if health professionals are as anti-IUD as they were ten years ago when I got mine. It worked out for me though and I recommend it if you have easy, cramp-free periods as to be able to afford an increase in your monthly cramps, which is a small price to pay if you do not want any unplanned pregnancies in your life.
