    Default Do you tan?

I'm thinking of doing it. I saw some comments on the spray-on tan booths and it looks like the best of both world (convenience and safe), but so expensive! It's $25 a session around here. I'm cheap! I want to know if it'd be worth the investment. I just don't see myself self-applying it since that's such a pain, otherwise I would.

My decision to tan or not is based on the lighting in the club. I definately think that my earnings are better when I am tan ( a little ). At my last club, we had very nice lighting and I did fine with my naturally fair skin.

At my current club, the lighting makes you look washed out if you are not tan so I've started using a HP tanning bed *occasionally* and augmenting the color with self-tanner. The spray on stuff looks orange to me now that I have seen it in person... could be the salon or employee administering, though.

I fake n bake for sure! I also deepen it with self tanner at home.
Never tan my face, use a bronzer in my make up or darker foundation to match.
If I am off work for a time though? I abstain. Let my skin rejuvenate. Also use alpha hydroxy lotions - tanning tends to dry my skin out - this is the only thing that keeps the moisture levels high in my skin.
Your question on whether it effects my earnings? Hmmm, I have to say yes, only in that I feel better knowing I look healthier, being celtic I am very white so a little color perks my complexion right up.
When I feel better I react with more confidence, which also boosts my earnings...chain reaction thing.

I tried the spray on stuff at several different salons, I found it clogged pores, it was streaky, and a few days later it starts sloughing off really patchy. I hated it. It also smelled funny - the smell never seemed to go away even after showering and perfume I could still smell the fake tan stink...freaked me out.
Didnt like it wouldnt reccomend it but just based on my experience.

I used to tan but don't any longer. Not even self-tanner. I'm already naturally tan colored but I do miss the thong tan line. I used the spray on tan a couple of times, the first time with excellent results after that it was streaky and blotchy. I think it was because I didn't follow the instructions to a tee. You must let the spray tan "dry" for several hours before doing anything that will make you sweat; I was going into work not long after my spray session. I do anticipate tanning in the natural sun after "June Gloom" is gone. (Never my face though. I always always cover my face)

forgot to mention: You can usually save on the spray tan by purchasing several in advance.

Is there any way I can tan safely?

I like bronze look but I am afraid of UV damage.

I don't use tanning bed much but if you have any relatively safe tanning bed use tip, please let me know.

I was planning to apply SPF 15 lotion everywhere and after sunscreen is absorbed I was going to put tanning lotion.

    Is this reasonable?

Tanning beds are much worse for your skin than the sun.

I use Mystic Tan (www.MysticTan.com) and love it! MY tan looks natural and I can get really dark, if I want to. It takes less than 60 seconds and the tan last almost a week.

I am a tanning bed addict, especially in the winter (I live in crappy Buffalo where the skies are grey and it snows all winter long). I personally think that most dancers look better with a tan, but that is just my opinion. I would like to try the Mystic tan thing but I am also too cheap to pay $20 or more per session, especially when I can get unlimited fake-n-bake for less than $200 per year. I am well aware that tanning beds are bad your your body and I am sure I will pay for it later on in life, but the rest of my health habits are pretty good (don't smoke, excercise regularly, etc...) so hopefully that will help make up for it.

This may sound strange, but i don't look good with a tan. I think there comes a time in some peoples lives where they look better light and clear. I am very light. I tanned sometime back, and looked bad. I don't know, i think i just look better very light. pluss i burn easy. I add a bit of highlighter to my skin at times, and get a glow, but a tan does not suit me. Strange.

I use a tanning bed every 2 daysif I start to fade. I like the relaxation. But in the summer I try and do it naturally. The natural tan seems to last longer.

I used to tan in the sun alot, but i dont feel like looking like a lizard when im 30 so ive stopped. I use the coppertone sunless tanning lotion ,it works really well for me and you dont smell like a litter box. it actually smells decent. They also have a great new one for your face.

I hate the smell you get after a fake and bake. Just pure nasty.

Yeah, I tried about 50 different ones before I found *one* that didn't stink. That one is the Tan-Do attitude in the Blue Spa line at Bath and Body works. It has a good color, too.

    Jade -

To answer your question, no. It is not a good idea to do as you mentioned. When you get a tan from the sun, that is a sign of damage to your skin. So regardless of whatever you put on your skin first, in order to get the effect you are looking for (i.e., a tan), it results in skin damage.

My cousin (who is only 33 now), used to fake 'n bake when she was younger (say high school to early 20s) - no more so than most kids her age, but she always had a nice base tan. She has not done so in quite a long time, though. Anyhow, for the past 7 years or so, she has been very wary of the effect it has had and, as a result, goes to get her skin checked for possible cancerous cells twice a year. Recently, she noticed an odd-shaped freckle clump on her leg and went to get it checked. Doc said she was lucky she had noticed it - evidently it was cancerous but she caught it before it started to actually spread. Good thing, doc said if she hadn't caught it (as most fairly young people don't go get their skin checked all the time like that) she would've been dead inside a year and a half. :o I can't imagine being faced with that at such a reasonably young age, especially when it could've been so easily avoided.

Personally, I can't tan naturally to begin with, so my only option is to use self-tanner. However, after talking to my cousin, I don't think I would consider doing it naturally, anyhow. All I can say is be very careful. The only way to truly "tan" safely is to fake it. :-/

    Amber!

    Thank you for your advice.

You confirmed what I guessed. I think I will stick to the sunless tanner.

When I tan I only tan less than 5 times a year to get some base color. I keep my tan session less than 15 minutes.

    It's better safe than sorry.

I just spent $90 for 5 tanning sessions. After 2 I totally noticed. This is a high-powered stand-up tan, so it's very even. 10 minutes is the max you are allowed in there. Then you go once/week after you have your desired color. 1 session is $25, or a little lower if you buy a package. I think it's worth it.

I used to tan in the sun out on my balcony for no longer than half an hour (15 mins. on my back, 15 mins. on my tummy). I always used a high protection sunscreen/block (SPF 30+) and didn't do it every day... sometimes only once a week.

However winter has set in and whilst the sun may be out... it isn't always great to tan (too windy for instance). So I've only recently opt-ed for a tanning bed once a week.

I only do once a week because I have olive skin and just want colour not to go darker. When I was really young, my family went to the beach every weekend and I have pics that show how dark I can get due to my olive skin... I don't need to be that dark. Just not a pale olive...

??? I've been told not to use sunscreen/block when using a tanning bed... so what do I use to not have the UV affect me so much yet still have the tanning bed do its thing?

Amber...sorry to post it here, but your post raised a question for me. For about 6 months ive had a small mole sized bump on my leg. Its really small but wierd. Id say its a mole but it is almost clear, with a small amount of color on one side. What did this clump on your cousin look like exactly? Ive been somewhat worried about it off and on, but dismiss it thinking it is just a wierd mole. Guess I should just go get it checked out tho.

I use Banana Boat self-tanner and then I smooth it out w/ dermablend body make-up. When I get to work, I put a light shimmer lotion on.

I go to Vegas from time to time since I have family there. I will go out in the sun if I am hanging out there. I don't really 'lay out' to tan. I use a heavy sun block on my face, chest and hands. I use a lesser sun block on the rest of my body. Although, I am half Spanish and brunette, my Dad is a ruddy, pale Irish/Scottish guy who burns after just minutes in the sun. He had skin cancer last year, but they caught before it spread. My dermatologist told me that even though I am dark, because my Dad had cancer, that makes me a candidate too.

I am such an outdoor beach girl that I feel so much better w/ color. Banana Boat seem to work the best on me and it smells good too.

    Cheers,

Being tan definitely translates into higher earnings for blondes. I'm also from the northeast where the weather is unpredictable, so I actually went out and bought my own tanning bed. This allows me to achieve a decent tan with minimal skin risk by doing 5 minute sessions every day, and it also saves me an hour of travel time to and from a tanning salon (plus it's tax deductible!).

I think most girls look better with at least a little bit of color. I live in Wisconsin and the weather here sucks so I have to fake bake lol. I tan about 3 times a week. It only costs me about $30 a month for unlimited tanning so it's well worth it.

I can't help to say it but I hate tanning beds! However, I go because I love the results but in stead of going a couple times a week I may go once. I just use the more intense beds and it lasts longer which inables me to only have to go once a week.

But nothing is better laying out in the sun.. "Ahh I wish I was at a beach "

I have black hair and I am half Mexican. I can only get but so pale. I like to keep my light comlexion because the contrast of dark hair and pale skin is something I like. Plus, I freckle. And I am scared of looking older than my age; UV damage can do that to you. Too many reasons for me to NOT tan. I never considered it.
