It can take as long as a year to 18 month's for your body to return to normal after stopping the depo shot. Every girl is different you sound like a lucky one, Sasha bled profusely her first 3 or 4 period's, I'm talking scary are you gonna be ok kinda flow. We got pregnant 6 month's after she stopped and it is said that that is rare too. You will return to normal but it take's time. There are some informative site's on the shot and I have read alot about the effect's and how differently it effect's people. Your's sound's like the best case scenario.

Hi I just wanted to warn everybody about the depo shot. I was on it for about 3-4 years, and I loved it, until it caused cysts on my ovaries. This was very painful and had to be removed. This doesn't happen in all women, but it is a possibility. So just be careful with the shot, the doctor took me off after the surgery and put me on the pills.

I am not on the shot but know 2 girls that have used it. The first girl had her period for 6 wks straight, I'm not kidding. I don't know about you all, but I hate my period so this would be hell. The second girl had irregular periods & eventually ended up in ths hospital with horrible, sharp pains in her abdomen which turned out to be a cyst that burst! BAsed on these 2 stories alone, I would never even consider Depo. Shan, sorry I couldn't answer your question.

Then there's me... I love the Depo shot. I hated the pill.. I had side effects with it and wasn't self-disciplined enough to take on every day. It is more convienent for me to have the Depo shot and I havn't had any side effects or any problems.... so far. Be on it for way over a year now.

I took the Depo for about 3 years after my first child. I was lucky enough not to have the cyst problem but I did gain about 30 pounds and I bled profusely for about 5 weeks. I would not recommend this shot to anyone.... I have a few friends that experienced similar problems to the one mentioned above. Good luck I hope you feel better soon,

oh my gosh don't even get me started on depo!

I was giving the shot only once, last year. I had terrible mood swings, gained 15 pounds, acne, and bled everyday for 4 months. Its been about a year now and my body is only just now returning to normal.

I've heard so many horror stories about this shot its scary. Some women who take the shot for a prolonged period of time even lose the ability to have children.

    Be careful

I wish I would've asked these questions BEFORE I tried depo. I was on it for over a year, and my period STILL hasn't returned to normal. When I first stopped it I bled for two weeks straight, every two weeks. This lasted for about 3 months, and then my period stopped completely. Now that it's back, it's really irregular (2 days here, 6 days here). I wouldn't recommend it for anyone. best wishes... Cynn

The first time I tried depo, I had just had my 1st endometriosis surgery. It worked great! Not one problem. I stayed on in for about a year and a half. I became pregnant about a year later. No birth control since until about a month ago. About a week after I took the shot this time around I began to bleed. I've been bleeding ever since. And it's not just blood, it's like tissue. Don't know what's happening...but I'm scared. I'll be going to the doc this week to see if I'm ok. hugs to all of you having these problems.

I was on depo for a while- I got 3 shots before I stopped. I gained about 15lbs, broke out extremely bad- i always had good skin until the depo- and I actually started losing my hair- really bad! I could actually pull clumps of hair out! I also bled really bad and had terrible mood swings. I didn't stop losing hair for about 6 months after I stopped getting the shot, but now my hair is finally growing back. I would not recommend the shot to anyone because it stays in your body for a long time after you stop. Oh and I also got ovarian cysts.

I was on depo for over a year, came off of it and bled for 9 months straight. No lay up nothing- just constant bleeding.

Went to docs, had cervical smears, urine tests, it cause PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) and a tilted uterus.

I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole now and would never recommend it

But thats just my pennance worth....lol

A risk I am very willing to take as I'm only taking depo because I made the decision a loooooong time ago to never have any children of my own. I'm waiting until I'm 30 so I can get "tubal litigation" or whatever it's called when I get my tubes tied.

Am I just abnormal as I havn't gained weight (I'm 48-49kgs), my mood swings aren't anything that they weren't prior to my starting depo, I have never had my period whilst on it... it's working for me and I've been doing the depo shots for nearly 2 years.

I hated the shot, and feel for anyone who takes it.

My best friend took the shot for 11yrs and finally got off of it in time to have a full hystorectomy due to the shot. She got ovarian cysts, cervical cancer, and utirine cancer from it. And she's only 34.

I took one shot and I gained 30 lbs, had bad acne (which I have never had before or after), and bleed like a stuck pig for 3 months straight.

You couldn't pay me to be on it again. I think it's just too many hormones for your body to deal with at once.

I had a really good experience with the shot. Just loved it, quite unlike so many of the horror stories I've heard before and since. Didn't have a period at all, no weight gain (sadly, could use some), no acne... but the interference with vitamin absorbtion business scared me off. And it did suck to be afraid I was pregnant for the 8 months after I stopped, before my period was regular again. Still debating doing it again though. Try as I might, I can never, never, never stick to the pill.

I went on it for 9 mounths, but was sick of spotting every two weeks, so I went off it. I was on the rag for a full year (light, but persistant). A year wasted to mood swings. It was horrible. There is a medicine if this happens, go in and see the doc, they will take care of it. When I finally went in, she told me I should have gone right in to see her. All it took to make me go back to normal was regular birth control pills, but theres a hormone to fix it for girls still on depo. Every body is different, so no one can be 100% on dose.
It was great for protection though, no pregnancy at all.

i have been hearing all of these terrible horror stories and am glad I am staying with the pill...i've never missed one pill and i've been on it for almost 4 years. This depo shot seems very sketch to me...

I have a somewhat decent experience. during my second year of taking it, i called it quits and several months laters I had gotten pregnant with my son. I currently take it only because I can't use the patch or else my milk supply will dry up.

I remember hearing about the controversy over Depo when I was growing up. It was banned in several countries because so many women experienced problems from using it. Banned for a time anyway... scarey shit though since it's now availiable.

    DIFFERNTAKES NO. 32 ~ SPRING 2005 | DIFFERENTAKES SERIES
    Depo-Provera: Old Concerns, New Risks
By Amy Oliver and Diana Dukhanova
    [pdf version]

The Summer 2000 issue of DifferenTakes provided an introductory glance at the injectable contraceptive Depo-Provera (or DMPA), and why many women's health advocates are concerned with its use and misuse around the world. 1 Approved for use in the U.S. in 1992, Depo has only become more controversial as its image as a hassle-free contraceptive clashes with the reality of possible side effects such as irregular bleeding, weakness, depression, weight gain, nausea, loss of libido, darkening of skin, abdominal pain, headaches and hair loss. 2 Side effects can be so numerous and severe that over 70% of American women who have ever used Depo discontinued their use within the first year. 3 Injected into the arm or buttock, Depo's effects last for three months and its effectiveness rate is an impressive 99.7%. 4 But with alarming new risks added to these worrisome side effects, the contraceptive deserves closer scrutiny.

    Depo-Provera Receives "Black-Box" Warning
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently mandated that Depo carry the "black box" warning label, the agency's most severe warning. Based on new data from Pfizer, Depo's manufacturer, the new label will inform users of recent findings that Depo causes a loss in bone mineral density that may not be completely reversible. The warning also suggests that Depo use should be limited to two years unless other forms of birth control are insufficient, and in this case women should be evaluated while taking the drug long-term.

These findings have special relevance to young women who are in the critical period of bone growth. Studies are conflicting as to whether or not bone loss can be completely recovered once use of the drug is discontinued. 5 Clearly, the FDA black box label poses a red flag that more research is needed on Depo's long-term effects on women's bone loss and future risk of osteoporosis.

    Snip.

I liked it, but I warn that if you're bipolar you might have a reaction like I seemed to. For about a week after each shot I became very distressed, kind of like a mix of bad pms, mania, and depression that cycled within hours. And I would get really bad tension headaches. It was really kind of disturbing. After the week was over though I'd turn back to normal.

Another weird thing is that when I got nervous (I have anxiety problems) I would spot. Other than that no problems. Bled for like a month initially after the first shot then it wasnt bad at all.

As for the hair falling out and such, my hair actually got healthier and i stopped losing as much after I got on the shot. My skin cleared up. I did gain weight though, but I find it a good thing. If you are underweight with abnormal periods I suggest trying the shot (assuming that you don't have an eating disorder, as I could see extra problems arising from that).

I study midwifery and women's health, and I just have to pipe in and say that Depo does TERRIBLE things to your hormones overall. Your cycles of creativity (ovulation) and purification (mensturation) are very important to your physical and emotional health. I won't go on and on about it, but I will say that hormonal birth control is not as pleasant and safe as doctors would have you believe, and Depo is by far the worst. Anything that keeps you from menstruating -- often long after you stop taking it -- is doing very icky things to your body. As many of the girls here have said.

If you'd like to help your body get back to regular health, I'd suggest taking Vitex (an herb) and getting accupuncture. Accupuncture is very good when it comes to reproductive and hormonal health. You can also try Black Cohosh (another herb) and making sure you're getting enough of the right types of fats in your diet if you'd like to be a go-getter. If doing the herb thing, be aware that tinctures work better but taste like crap. Both of these herbs are safe to take two or three times a day, and can be obtained at any health food store.

    Hope that helps!
