    Default Hair Extensions

I would really appriciate hearing about people's experience with hair extensions.

I am just starting out. I have short, very fine hair. Growing out is difficult. I have an audition, my first tonight, and I'm going to be wearing pony tail clip in. At this point I am fairly committed to getting extensions once I have the money.

The two methods of hair extension that have caught my eye are fusion and integration. Has anyone tried these?

Basically, regarding all of the methods, I am wondering about how natural it feels, what maintaining them is like, and is styling more of a hassel? I'm also wondering about the damages to your natural hair-- is it possible to grow out your "real" hair while you have extensions?

    thanks a bunch!

What city are you in? I could definately help you find someone in your area. I have had my hair done in extensions for a while now. I would recommend getting the Hair Police method. Pinch braids tied with a string. No glue, gum or wax. Very safe for your hair. Awesome results.

Thanks for the link-- I've been having a difficult time finding links for hair extensions that show styles that I can picture myself wearing. I love the colors!

I'm in Arizona, and it doesn't look like they have any affiliates in that area.

I have found a place that does "euro-locks" here in town, and they sound a lot like the braid and pinch method.

How frequently can you wash, what's brushing like?
    Thanks for the info!

BTW: I just got back from my audition, and I start tomorrow afternoon!

I also have short hair, and it's really thick as well. I have had extensions put in twice now - the first time I went with full braids and it looked awesome, but I couldn't wear them for long. My scalp was so itchy, and I had sores all over from the weight of the braids pulling on my head. (some call it white girl scalp syndrome...lol)I think I had an allergic reaction to the braiding hair. It took something like 18 hours to do, so you can imagine how expensive that was, and I only kept them in for 2 weeks. Not a very good experience. Second time I went with the best quality synthetic hair available and had microbraids done only to fasten the extensions, leaving it loose for most of the length of the hair. Also took forever because my head is so thick, but didn't bother my scalp nearly as much. I kept those in for 2 months. I could do more with it, but found that it tangled a lot, so mostly I was wearing it in braids or ponytails, etc. Brushing had to be done very carefully so as not to pull the hair out, washing as infrequently as possible. I only washed when it was smelling kind of funky, and some of the hair tended to slip out after a wash and would have to be refastened (I got quite good at rebraiding touchups) Now my natural hair was only a couple inches long, so it does hold better with more length.
It was fun to do as I have worn my hair short for a long time, but the maintenance was a bit of a pain, and I didn't make any better money with it long - in fact I think I stood out more in the club with my short spiky blond locks.

I have a GF who has extensions and they are LONG!!! She had them braided right into her hair very close to the scalp. Look beautiful!!! Goes to get them tightened up after a couple months. She had a headache for 2 days after because of the pulling on the hair (the tightness.) Now she looks great. Pamela PS i think she bought real hair, and washes and goes. Blow drying makes them look kinda dry she says. And uses a gentle shampoo from the salon. They should be able to help you with all your questions about care.

I've had every kind of extentions out there and they're cool in the club but wait till you're outta the club and a guy goes to touch your hair. They're response is always "what the hell is this Sh*t" . Guys just don't get it, they never will, and it's almost always a turnoff. I've never met a guy who liked the way they felt. I've had the braids, the bonded kind, the strand by strand kind... the $800 kind and my advice is DON'T GET THEM. They will ruin your real hair. All the girls at the club agree and say this (aside from a few who have them in right now and think they're great.... yeah well, until they take them out). Stick with Falls (they look surprisingly real in the club) and clip on ponytails. Also Raquel Welch sells this GREAT GREAT hair extention set that is similiar to normal hair extentions only the wefts are CLIPPED in securly by tiny little clips you can't see and u can take them out the same night. Go to the website called GlamourHair.com for the best hair for extentions or the Raquel Welch kit I mentioned. You'll love it!

It really depends on what kind you get and how they are put in. U get what u pay for so using synthetic hair instead of human for extended wear will look cheesy and fake. Using human hair is usually better, but u do have 2 treat it like u treat your own. I heard a girl at work, who has braids, say she doesn't wash her hair at all so that they won't slip out. That is totally gross I think. When i had braids I rinsed my hair at the end of every night I worked and washed it every two days. Its a cleanliness issue for me.
Fusion can also be good, which is strand by strand bonding of human hair to your hair using a tool like a hot glue gun. This provides extremely natural looking results. The biggest thing is u don't wanna run your hands through your hair and they get caught. If they do chances are that it is too bulky. The better your extensions are, the easier it should be for your hands to run through your hair. It is expensive though.
But, to just try it out follow phoebes advice about a clip on or a fall to see if you like the look. It is totally commitment free b/c if u don't like it u simply take it out. U can also go buy some wefted, hair sewn on to a track, hair and play around glueing it in to experiment. If u don't like it, wash it out. Be sure to buy glue remover and u can take it right out.

I also heard the continual tightening of the extensions can eventually pull out the real hair they are connected to causing a bald spot if worn for a very long time. Are they not a temporary means anyway? Just until your hair gets the length you want? I know alot of stars etc, have them in one movie out the next. Christins A. herself had mentioned that her hair is real in some areas (the black) and extensions in others. (read that in US mag.) because of the tension her hair was having, especially after washing when it was wet and heavy. Pamela
Anyone had the experience of losing hair with them?

    Hola' Ladies,

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here. I wore braids (like Brandy) and extensions (sewn in - NEVER USED GLUE!!) for one year off and on, by that, I mean I alternated styles approx. every three weeks. I was able to experiment with different hairstyles and the best part was when I finally took down my hair, it was healthier than it had ever been and had grown from chin-length to the middle of my back! The only hair loss I experienced would happen whenever I first took down my hair, and per my hairstylist, that was all the hair that would've fallen out anyway - it just "collected" for the three weeks.

Now, I have had friends who put their braids in WAYYY to tight, used glue bonding, or just generally did not take care of their hair. Bless their hearts, their hair came out in clumps - not good. When you have fake hair, you have to take care of your own hair , as well as the fake hair. I would spray conditioner onto my hair, and use a light conditioner on the weave (also, for braid-wearers of all ethnicities I recommend using a 'black' hair product called African Pride Braid Sheen. It smells great and is a very light conditioner - probably not best for anyone with extremely oily hair). Wash your hair according to your lifestyle - I was pretty active then, and washed my hair two-three times a week. Some girls can get away with once a week, others every other day (which I wouldn't recommend with fake hair).

Keep in mind you get what you pay for, so make sure your hairstylist is highly reputable & skilled in weaving and that the hair you use is human hair; you may even want to buy a sample and "test" it out by using a curling iron on it, washing it, etc...

As for men not liking weaves or braids, I'm not sure about men in exotic clubs (I'm still a 'wanna-be newbie' ) but the men I came into contact with loved my hair and the ability to change it. In the strip clubs I've visited, quite a few ladies wear some form of extension (although they'd never admit, lol) and haven't heard any complaints from the patrons.

    Just MO,

    Amethyst

No don't get me wrong, guys in the strip club love our hair with extentions (cuz half the time they don't know its fake).. what I meant was every guy I've had a relationship with, in real life (as in no one from the club) HATED feeling the fakeness in my hair. I did love it however.... gave it up for my boy tho

I had those. I had them done by a hair police pro and went to Milios on the north side of Chicago (known for their hair extentions). They were virtually indetectable to anyone besides someone running their hands through my hair. Where can I get these 100% indetectable ones done? I might consider hair extentions again then.... Anyone know of a good place in Chicago other than Milios?

[quote] I have short, very fine hair.

First off, considering that you have very fine hair, you may want to reconsider getting extensions. I say this because the hair can weigh you down. And since you have a very fine grade of hair, it would more than likely break.
But, if you have your heart set on extensions, make sure you get a professional who has experience with fine grades of hair. Alot of people can do weaves, but if they have no expertise in your kind of hair, then how much help are they?
I personally dont' recommend the fusion technique because the hot glue can be very damaging. The weave of choice that I use most often is called "The Malaysian" weave. It's great. It's hair sewn in without having your natural hair braided first. It'll cost you anywhere from $200-$500 depending on the stylists level of expertise.

I had a very nice lady sew in extentsions to braids that she braided horizontially on to my scalp. It cost me $100 for the hair at and she charged me $20 a track to braid and sew in the hair. I had four tracks put in and I kept them in for a month. I could have kept them in longer but they itched and they were hard to clean. I did make more money and people both in and out of work loved my hair, but I don't think I would do it again.
