Default Should saline implants be recalled?

Saline implants leak at least a teaspoon a year....what a waste of your money right?Well now they have gel implants that are softer, ripple a lot less, and can't brake.I think all saline implants should be replaced for free or at least at a major discount.
Another topic I'd like to throw in is :Regulating practices of Plastic surgons.Tell me what ya think.

by FDA regulations, US girls cannot get silicone gel filled implants for a first surgery unless they have a specific medical condition (tubular breasts etc.) which justifies it. This guarantees that 10 times as many saline implants will continue to be used as silicone. This also guarantees that NO efforts will be made to encourage the increased use of silicone. Besides, the natural shrinkage of saline implants is a major moneymaker via causing lots of girls to shell out for second surgeries - plastic surgeons and implant companies have a vested interest in continuing to use saline implants.

Why is it illegal for first implants to be silicone?

because the FDA has their head up their a$$ ! Actually, it's a leftover from the Dow Silicone scare, where the FDA declared (for a while) that Silicone implants were hazardous and banned them altogether. However, after several years the FDA had to finally admit that the British and French studies - which had always said that the incidence of problems in girls with silicone implants occurred at exactly the same percentages as girls with saline implants or girls with NO implants - were right all along. The FDA grudgingly acknowledged that silicone implants could again be used in the USA - but only under certain conditions.

Is the law about not being able to get silcone implants the first time around? I saw that this thread was 2 yrs old.

From what I remember they have tried to get silicones approved twice now by the FDA. Both times the comitee recommended it, but it didn't actually happen! The FDA sucks! Jenna

Is that true??? Melonie, I figured you'd know the truest stats...do saline implants leak/seep that much??? If so then I am going back to get the silicone (I beleive you can do so if you have already had implants) ??? This is what my doc told me...about the second time around, getting (being eligible) for the silicone...or is it on a state-to-state basis??? Yikes...I had no idea!

Actually silicone is hazardous and if leaked into your body from your implants it can cause serious health issues. I watched a documentary of a girl who got implants when she was 18, they were silicone. She became ill a couple months to a year after having the implants, they didn't know what was wrong. They tested her for everything they could think of, including various cancers. Nothing. Until 3 years later they finally realized that the silicone was leaking out into her body and causing her to be so ill that she was near death at that point. They did a surgery taking out the implants and she recovered fine. She has been healthy ever since, but she'll never get implants again.

The new implants are cohesive gels and aren't liquid. They have the consistancy of jello, so "leaking" in a traditional sense is not possible.

Sometimes people get sick from silicone. Sometimes people get sick because of weeds and grasses too. It really does vary from person to person. People are also getting sick occasionally from the chemicals that leech into our food from plastic containers placed in the microwave, but the majority of people don't get sick from it and are perfectly healthy.

Honestly, I've felt healthier and have gotten fewer colds since I got my silicone implants last year. I think this a situation that it varies from person to person, and can't be blamed in a blanket statement like "silicone implants make people sick".

That's true in the traditional sense but cohesive get can still migrate through the body. (Solid silicone can still break up and migrate). I think this is why it's recomended that implants be removed or replaced every 4-7 years as they do break down somewhat over time. Also part of the problem with silicone is the oil that excapes from the implants. I think all my links are in the "Implants with mold' thread.
