Default difference between stand up and tanning beds?

i just did my very first two tanning sessions... the first in a tanning bed and the second a day later in a stand up booth at holly wood tans... i used the cheapest stand up there... they said there are two more expensive... they said the more expensive the less burning uv and the more tanning uv... i am confused

the girl at the tanning bed place said beds give u a longer lasting, but lighter tan, and stand ups give u a darker, yet sooner fading tan.... please can someone explain the difference...?

sorry for all the questions here... ive only been dancing for like 5 months... and u girls have been so awesome so far... u were the ones who helped me make it i seriously would b living on the streets if it werent for this board showing me that dancers can be very intelligent and analytical. (my mother and me were evicted... and dancing gave me the funds to afford an apartment in my area)

anyway... so how do these tanning methods differ?

In the long run, I don't think it matters which type of tanning bed you use. Personally, I like the lay down beds better because they're more relaxing. I just turn over and lay on my stomach about halfway through my tanning session so I don't end up with a white spot on my ass. I've tried the stand up booths and the lay down booths and they both give me good color, so I would say use whichever one you like the best. I try to go tanning 3 times a week, either Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to give my skin a break in between. I used to go tanning 4 or 5 days a week but it dried out my skin too much. I also put a towel over my face when I tan so I don't get wrinkles and end up looking like I'm 50 when I'm 30. I just use a darker colored foundation to match my skin tone.

    Hi there-

This is how tanning beds work (from my dermatologist):

The sun emits 3 types of UV rays, UVA, UVB and UVC (UVC are absorbed by the upper atmosphere and don't reach us). UVA rays are the ones that are more responsible for aging your skin, as they penetrate deeper into the dermis than UVB rays, which are usually the cause of sun burns because they penetrate just the outer layers of skin.

When tanning beds were first created, they used UVB lamps mostly and lots of people got burned. So, they changed to mostly UVA lamps for a 'safer' tan but at the cost of more long term damage, I would think, since the rays are penetrating deeper into the skin.

Strawberry, she might have been referrring to a bed with UVB lamps, the "more burning, less tanning" one. Hope that this helps with the confusion!

I also use a tanning bed because of the same reason as blondehottie. Then again, I'm a Solarium Virgin and the only type of Solarium that I have used so far is a tanning bed.

    :-D

Stand up beds usually offer more bulbs and stronger bulbs. I love rotating between lay down and stand up to get your underarms, ankles, and but lines. If you like relaxing in the beds be sure to sit on the bed a few minutes each session so you dont get the but lines.

I hated laying in a bed. I was always sweating profusely...and then I would get those "lines". I think that the stand-up beds were better. But, for the reasons sweetpea gave, I gave up tanning. I fake tan now.
