Default Meditation Shown to Light Up Brains of Buddhists

LONDON (Reuters) - Buddhists really are happy, calm and serene people -- at least according to their brain scans.

Using new scanning techniques, neuroscientists have discovered that certain areas of the brain light up constantly in Buddhists, which indicates positive emotions and good mood. This happens at times even when they are not meditating.

Have you heard about the "God area" in the human brain? It's an area in our brains that lights up every time we listen to the word "God" (or whatever name you call God). It happens even if the person is atheist.
    Are you Buddhist?

Mariana, where did you get that? Sounds like an interesting read, was it a study of some sort?
Not big on "GOD" persay but I have my own spirituality gleaned form information I sought out over the years, buddhist have a beautiful approach to spirituality!

Just not too engrossed in the commercialism of organised religion in any form. It offends and contradicts the very prinicipal.

Deepak has some interesting stuff to say on the whole issue as well.

Ok back to my question, did u get this from a book or a tv program or...? Sounds like interesting reading.

    Hi Leigh Landon ,

I learnt that in a spiritualist lecture that I attended last January.
Physicist and philosopher Dana Zohar found out about it. She says that, besides IQ and EQ (emotional quotient), we also have a SQ (spiritual quotient). Take a look at this:

"(...) it’s one of our three main intelligences that are built into the brain. (...) And SQ, or spiritual intelligence, is the intelligence with which we imagine how things could be better or different, how we transform situations, and we do that through looking for the meaning hidden within the situation, looking for meaning in our lives, looking for something that matters to us, as I say, something that gives us a sense of purpose."
    ()

You can find more info about it in her book "Spiritual Intelligence: The Ultimate Intelligence". I didn't buy yet, but I want to.
I like Buddhism too... actually, I'm very open to different ideas, but my religion is LOVE, above all!

My roomate practices buddhism, alot. I think it's cool and would never knock what anyone else believes in.
here is a popular saying thet i hear often..lol

Our understanding of buddhism is not just an intellectual undrerstanding.
True understanding is actual practice itself.

    Leigh,

There were articles in several journals about it, as well as an AP article... and I think it was a group of reasearchers. Wait, I'm gonna find it...

Thank you Lena and Mariana for the links...I find this stuff absolutely fascinating and love the different spins on the same theme. Mariana - yes - love, I find is the common denominator of all.

In any event, off I go to add to my colllections, I have a pretty good pile of all kinds shapes and sizes of religions or beliefs or spirituality from Catholicism to dead sea scrolls (which I saw while on a trip to scotland in the museum... cool..) Buddhism, dianetics, Judaism, books on life after death, near death experiences, the karmic wheel, reincarnation, etc etc etc!!

I just find it fascinating reading.

Sorry, I didn't see your question before.
No, I'm not a Buddhist but I have deep respect for their ideas. I just don't believe that a human soul can reincarnate as a bug or another animal.
