Default Lining eyes with smoky black

Do you think when you hit your early thirties (no wrinkles yet) that you can line the inside and outside of your eyes with Kohl Black liner for that smoky effect and not look older? (or too gothic)

For instance, Avril Levine's makeup is heavy-but she is young, so she can get away with it.

Do you think a girl who has blue/grey eyes, w/black hair and is also in her early thirties can still get away with black eyeliner and not look silly?

(i need an image consultant i think...)

I use brown or aubergine. I have blue eyes and dark brown hair. It looks less harsh than black to me on everyone I've seen try it. The trick as always is to blend blend blend. It also helps to do your makeup then turn the lights down and look in a mirror to see the effect.

A good thing to do might be to pay a visit to your local high end cosmetics counter and have someone do your eyes for you. Just let them know what effect you are going for. I also can't recommend the Kevin Aucoin books (Making Faces and Face Forward) enough!

The smokey eye effect is very sexy! No matter what age. To NOT look like a makeup bag! When you play up your eyes, keep your lips light. Otherwise you look to "harsh".
Use brown, since it is more of a natural colour. Black can look un- natural. Browns work for every skin tone. And you can use dark brown with a lighter shade!
I have blue eyes, and browsn look great. Black is harsh. But i am light skinned....Very!
Try a bit of a "makeunder". Play around in the mirror, whenyou see what looks good on you, wear it. But i really love the smokey eye look. I smudge the liner around my eyes! And sometimes rim my inside lids, which does make them look sexy, but smaller. Brings out eye colour great.
Good luck. Pamela.....back off to bed. Late night.

Good! Thanks for the responses guys! I do have Aucoin's book, and I agree, it is a great instruction
'manual' for proper makeup techniques. I just get unsure when I try different makeup. (i recently grew out my natural very dark haircolor and I am needing to revamp my makeup colors)

In Aucoin's makeup book, you know the page that features 'Jewl' wearing the really dark smoky eye? That is similar to the effect I want.

Do you think having dark black lined eyes both inside and outside is too much for daytime?

I don't think so,. I wear that look both day and night. It's all a matter of preference and if you feel comfortable wearing it : )
