    Default Removal of Belly Piercing

I've had a belly button piercing for the past 6 years. I removed it today, and intend to allow it to heal closed.

Does anyone know how long it takes for it to close and heal completely? Is it likely to become infected while closing? Do I need to know anything particular about care during this time?

First is the piercing currently inflamed (red, hot, swollen) if it is not then it could take anywhere from a few hours to many months for it to close all the way (if the piercing is irritated i find it closes faster but leaves more scar tissue). If it is currently not infected then there is little chance it will get that way as long as you keep it clean (just soap and water once a day (i.e. bath or shower) over cleaning with things like peroxide or alcohol will wreck your skin and irritate the piercing site

You also have the chance of it not closing. For example I've had my ears pierced for a long time and I've gone for two years without earrings and they never closed up!

    McCain,
Chances are, since you've had the piercing for 6 years, that the piercing will probably not close up. It may shrink up a little bit, but there will always be a hole there. You can try rubbing some vitamin K into the area to help speed up to skin regrowth; unfortunately, after 6 years the pierced area has toughened a lot and will most likely not re-seal itself into prepiercing condition. Azryale was right on with the cleaning info; there's a negligible possibility it will get infected so long as you remember to wash the area well (especially if you're wearing body glitter, Dermablend or other makeup in the area).
    Good luck

I had my belly pierced for years, upon taking it out due to pregnancy, my tiny hole was completely closed in close to a year.

All i did was wash it with soap and water daily. It will close. No need to pay special attention to it. And they start to close quick.
Just like my third ear piercing i had for 6 years, i stopped wearing a ring in that hole, and it closed up. But the belly being a great healing area, will close, but it will take about a year. I noticed, and you may to, scar tissue inside. It feels hard, and when i had a scan, they said it was from my piercing.
Don't worry they do close, especially if you had a small ring or bar inside.
Hmm after going back and reading others messages, maybe some people don't completely close up. Mine did however with no help, just washing daily. :-/

Even though I have had this thing six years, I think it probably will heal closed. My ears are each pierced three times - the newest being 10 years old - and they still heal have to repierced if I go for more than a month without wearing earrings. So I'm thinking maybe that regenerative ability will extend to my abdomen as well.

It isn't currently infected or irritated; I've actually had surprisingly good luck with this thing, and was even capable to keep it in through one full pregnancy with only minor problems. I know better than to use the peroxide and alcohol (trust your piercer! ), but I am concerned about the possibility of infection occurring from shed skin cells becoming trapped within the "tunnel" after the openings narrow / close.

No worries about body makeup or the like. I've been semi-retired since December. LOL

In the meantime, thanks guys for the advice, and I will certainly look into the whole Vit K thing.

    McCain-
sorry to assume you didn't know that about peroxide, i have just seen some really smart people do really weird things to their piercings (and some piercers give BAD information), but as for the "Skin goo" it will be absorbed by your body as your piercing closes, and is harmless as long as you keep your tummy relatively clean

You know, I came close to ignoring that advice, Azryale, at one point when it become infected after the ring caught on something and I developed a small tear. In the end, though, what I did (and it worked quite well) was to use a diabetic syringe with the needle removed (courtesy of a friend who is a nurse) to irrigate it with Bactine, while rotating the ring, 4 times a day. Cleared up the infection rather quickly and with minimal trouble. And it was far les painful than the standard washes with liquid antibacterial soap.

I don't know what the official piercer's stance is on that method, but mine was fine with it when I explained it to him and showed him the end results. Any ideas on why there would be a difference? I mean, I understand that peroxide works in a different manner altogether, but I always thought Bactine worked in a manner similar to alcohol.

(This is a rather moot point to healing a piercing over, as you cannot irrigate once it is closed, but perhaps it would be helpful if anyone else's gets infected?)
