    Default Tan Redheads?

I'm being a guinea pig at a chi-chi NY salon Monday and I'm going red. I naturally am very fair skinned and have green eyes, so it'll suit me. Anyway I haven't been stripping for a while, but I probably will again, and when I did I used self tanner. But I've always thought tans on redheads look weird. Any redheads out there? What do you do? Stay white & go with the glow? Or do you have specific recommendations for self-tanners that aren't too dark and work well with a redhead's coloring? Thanks!

I like the look of a redhead with a hint of sun, personally (I am the only non redhead in my family so I have the fair skin and freckles on the bridge of my nose ). Depending on what shade of red you are going will have a lot to do with how dark you should go. I've seen some girls go very dark and look great.

I personally have found that both the Bath & Body Works self-tanner ("Tan-Do Attitude" I think) and Benefit's "Aruba in a Tuba" give a nice natural sunkissed look on pale skin. A little of Benefit's "Hula" bronzer looks good too.

I'm a redhead. Sometimes I do the natural, fair-skinned thing and sometimes I'll go with the self-tanner. I don't go too, too dark, but I personally prefer a lil bit of color on myself (aside from the fact that it makes the body look slimmer - always a plus ).

Anyhow, I use Clarins Self-Tanning gel. It's one of the few I've found that works well with my coloring. Since I'm so fair, many others have too much of an orange-ish tone and the red hair only brings out the orange more. Hope that helps a lil!!

I have naturally auburn hair and am fair-skinned with freckles, but can tan a little. I color my hair anything from a strawberry blond to a medium-dark red, and generally keep a little tan. I think I look better with a little tan. Anyway, for self-tanners I like Coppertone Endless Summer best for my coloring - gets me a nice color without looking fake or too dark. Also, the little tan I get (either from a bottle or the sun) looks just fine with my hair, whether it's on the lighter or darker side of red.

    Good luck!

Thank you for all the tips, everyone. I am now a redhead, though still very pale

While we're on the subject of redheads (artificual ones) - does anyone have tips for getting eyebrows to match? Mine are dark brown/black naturally and it looks a little weird with the auburn hair now. It's illegal for salons in NY to color eyebrows or eyelashes. I have Jolen Creme Bleach, but I'm afraid to use it in case my eyebrows go completely invisible blond, a la Casper the Friendly Ghost.

I'm afraid that since no pro salons can do it in your area, your best bet might be to lighten them yourself and then recolor them with a cosmetic. I think it was the Kevin Acouin book "Making Faces" that had the best instructions. I would never recommend dying them yourself out of concern for safety, but I have known people who have done it.

Depending on whether or not you are a light or dark redhead, you may be able to do what I did (I was darkish-red and have dark brown eyebrows) : have them trimmed and maybe thinned a bit (depending on hair density) and use one of the auburn eyebrow pencils on the market to add a reddish tone to them... I used a very finely sharpened maybelline eyebrow pencil to fill in the created sparceness (lightly). It gave an impression of matching the red hair without ruining them for the future. This is the least invasive way I can think of.

You can lighten your eyebrows yourself. I've been doing mine since I was in junior high. Just buy a bottle of Loreal Excellence Creams and apply just a small amount to your eyebrows with a Q-tip. Just make sure to "rub" it into your hair. If you don't, you'll end up with lightened tips and "roots" on your eyebrows. I learned that the hard way. Needless to say, that look doesn't work all too well. As long as you don't get it in your eyes you'll be fine. The creams are easier b/c they won't drip. It is actually very easy! -Fire
