    Default Sponges

So a freind told me to get a natural sea sponge and use that instead of a tampon when I was on my period - just pull it out, rinse, and reinsert.

I was around the house today and thought I'd try it and OMG it works! I love it! I had this little make up sea spong that hadn't been opened and I used it. It feels like you don't have anything in there. And it's sooo much easier to fish out then the tampons... just hook and pull.

So now I want to use it all the time... tho I don't suppose it would go over well in public bathrooms ("oh, just excuse me while I rinse out my sponge")

Ironically enough.............. I have an older friend who has been a working girl all her life who told me about this a long time ago. She says its really convenient, but that in the old days they would use a sponge or a rinsed out half-lemon and turn the lemon round side out over the cervix to catch the flow, sorta like those Instead things or Keeper cups. She told me working girls use this when on the rag so they can keep making money without their period getting in the way.

On Topic: I have seen at natural food stores some similar items sold expressly for the purpose of being a tampon substitute. I like the sea sponge option, though. Being one of those *earthy* chicks, I'll try that next time around.

Slightly off topic, Divyne: your input made many things in some reading I'm doing on the Comstock and Yukon Gold Rush working girls make a hell of a lot more sense. Things like this (the lemon trick) -are usually only alluded to. Many thanks; it gives me a new research direction. [idea]

Yikes! I wonder what gynos would say about that. I would worry about bacteria growth in a reusable sponge.

Well, actually I once read somewhere that most of the bacteria on your hands are killed from just rubbing them under warm water. Sooo, one could deduce mister sponge would operate the same way.

Besides, how could it be any worse than bleached cotton, rayon, and other fabrics sitting in your coochie and festering. The bacteria in your twat are all pretty happy and good. Only when one type runs amuck that it's a problem.

I'm guessing if these were so terrible one of those annoying "TV Magazine" programs would have done an "in depth investigative report" and we would have heard about it!

On the other note, I really want one of these. I would rejoice in the opportunity to wash it in a public restroom. Love making people squirm.

The concept sounds similar to the Keeper, which is a reusable cup. I loved my Keeper, so much more than those damn tampons. But I just lost it!!! [grr]

As for the sponge, I never heard about it. Where can one get such a thing? How big should it be? How do you insert it?

    I'm very interested

I think mine came from Cover Girl... I was told to get a big one, like you would find in bath supplies, and cut it down to "your size." I couldn't find one, so I picked the biggest of the make up ones.

Just shove it up there. It's not going anywhere. I try to put it right in that bigger space, where your uterus comes to a T. Basically the same place I put a tampon. And then just reach up with a finger and pull it out. Unlike a tampon, you can just push it against the front wall of your uterus and slide it out with one finger.

Smurf! You have to do it and tell me how people react LOL

I actually did it in the dressing room bathroom last night with two other girls and they didn't even notice. Here I was all proud of my sponge and nobody even notice :-(

wow i have heard of the sponge and working girls but never the lemon... bizarre. but hey if it works... it just seems so wierd to put a citrus fruit up there! i have used a sea sponge too, it does work but i would still throw it out after one nights use.

that sounds like it might get kind of icky and if you don't get it sanitized you can get an infection. Of course periods are always icky.

Here is a website which sells real sea sponges. I've heard good things about the company (i.e. good quality products), but have never purchased any of their products personally. (I'm happy with my Playtex!) They sell two sea sponges for $7.99 not including shipping.

I love it! But why pay eight dollars for spong in the mail when I can buy one at Walmart for two dollars? :-)

i use the sponges and i love them!!!! about the bacteria- it reccomends in their packaging that you clean them with a hyrdrogen peroxide solution, or tea tree oil in water, which kills all the little buggers. you can boil them if you want, but it shrinks them and makes them harden. i've noticed that they seem to breathe, too.... they never leak menstrual fluid for me, as long as i change them regularly, but somehow i still seem to have normal vaginal lubrication, unlike with a tampon, which leaves me bone dry. in a public restroom, i usually just put the used sponge in plastic baggy in my purse, and wet a new one in the sink and go back in the stall to reinsert it. no one is grossed out by an unused sponge- and most of them probably don't know what i'm doing with it. they say you can just squeeze out the fluid into the toilet and reinsert it, but this sounds a bit unsavory to me.... i'm not sure i'd use them for dancing, though, as i have a moderately heavy flow and worry that i might forget to rinse it often enough. i usually need to do so every 2 or 3 hours. also, i've used the lunapads for a while now, and i love them to death! and by the way, don't get your tea tree oil in the kit. your pay a high price for it, when you can get better quality stuff for cheaper at an herb shop. the only give you a tiny vial, anyway.
