Default This is an odd question...HELP

I have purchased an old beautiful blanket from an antique store (at least the price said it was, kinda have second thoughts now on age).
Anyway, it smells of mothballs, is real old, (maybe), i was told.
Sure looks old, but i can't have it dry cleaned, she said no.
I washed it in my washer and hung it in the air, did not help.
Does anyone know how to get this awful smell out ???
The old fashioned way that won't tear it apart.
    Thanks,

Have you thought of using that Fabreeze stuff. I think it's gentle enough to use on just about anything and it really takes the stink out. Good luck!

Maybe putting it in the dryer with 5-10 dryer sheets. Maybe putting the blanket in a closet and lighting a glade scented candle in the closet with it.

I agree with scarlet. Try febreeze, it works wonders. Now they even have Febreeze for the washing machine, that ought to work really well.

that febreeze or whatever it is junk has never worked with me.. just put it in a little bag with about 5-10 sheets of bounce.. and leave it under your bed for a few weeks.. just.. forget about it.. then when you rember it.. it should smell just fine

:o Now way! Febreeze works really well, and leaving outside is a good idea. But this suggestion is only good if you want to burn down your house. [flaming]

I use Febreeze and it works well. Also hanging outside for a few days is good. I wouldn't put it in a closet or anything sealed because that could cause mold or possibly make the smell worse. You want to air it out, so try letting it hang on the clothesline for a few days. Maybe hose it with Febreeze, then hang it out. Should be fine after a couple days like that! Good luck!

Febreeze i will purchase! Just have not had the time. Been hanging out side, but i don't want sun to hit it directly for long. I'm afraid it will fade it some. The smell is getting no better. Right on! I need febreeze. Let you all know.
I can't put it in a dryer the seller said.

Does it have a 'wrong' side so you could hang it upside down, so the sun won't hit the 'right' side and fade the design? Also, if you have a back porch or screened area that could be better - will be less exposed to sun and possible rain.

You might also try just putting it in the washer on soak and turning the machine off to let it sit in the soapy water for a couple hours. I sometimes have to soak things that get a bit smelly - it helps!

Thanks all who responded to this message. I did hang it out for many days, sprayed with Febreez and until it was damp. Finally the smell worked it's way out!

Try the home dry cleaning product Dryall. You just toss it in your dryer with a cleaner sheet in the clothe bag and deoderizes as well as cleans.

Pamella, why didnt the lady want you to dry clean it or wash it and dry it?Was it because of the antique value of it?Because if that is the case and your not going to re sell it someday, you could probably just dry clean it.I buy many antiques also, mostly furniture and they say not to re paint it or re finish it because it lowers value, but if Iam not going to ever get rid of it,I do it anyways.

I've dealt in vintage clothing and fabrics since I was a teenager and have found truely most fabrics can be dry clreaned by the right person and method. Some of the newer "environmentally safe" methods of DC are better for fabrics than the old chemical method. There are currently 3 common methods of DC but not all are available in smaller towns.

Frankly, if Febreeze didn't effect the color or integrity of the fabric (that stuff is harsh on old cloth!) there is a way to dry clean it. When it is time to re-clean it, call around to antique dealers and ask who they trust or simply find the newer method cleaners and find out who is trusted with the expensive heirloom wedding gowns

Try something called Nature's Miracle, from the pet store. THEN, give it an afternoon in the bright sun to dry out.

OR, put vodka in a spray mist bottle and treat the blanket, also let it dry in the sun...this WORKS and is cheap if you use cheapo vodka.

    Good luck!

Sorry I missed this topic, but in the future, you could always put it in a trunk or a plastic bag with cedar chips for a few days. Air it out for a day and then do it over (throw the other cedar chips out if they've lost their smell, though). One other question...how come you can wash it, but not dry clean it? Hmmmm..just wondering.

Congrats on getting the smell out!
