    Default diet pills

Regardless of my best judgement and rationale, I'm interested in checking some diet pills out. I would like it to work in conjunction with my excercise and nutrition. I'm happy with how my body has been changing due to the weight training and cardio that I have been doing, but I kinda want a little boost. Any suggestions/info? Thanks

Talk to your physician and ask if they can give you a solid recommendation. Occasionally, if there is a genuine need, they will even prescribe something for you. Unfortuantely, the most effective prescription diet medications are also the most dangerous.

If you are wanting to go over-the counter, I strongly urge you to stay away from anything with ephedra, pseudo-ephedrine, or ma-huang. These are basicaly herbal stimulants, and can lead to all kinds of evil thing sif you aren't careful or have a bad reaction. See other threads in here for further information on exactly what kind of ill effects.

Personally, going with herbal stuff, I actually found some subtle but evident results when I was taking cayenne capsules. There is something about the capsaicin (sp?) content that helps boost your metabolism temporarily - not to mention that the stuff actually helps protect your heart. Caffeine pills like Vivarin may also be helpful, but I would make sure to take them in moderation, for short periods of time only, and to drink TONS of water when you take them. Caffeine is a dehydrater, so the water is very very important. Not only that, but it will make the metabolising of caffeine pills much easier on your kidneys.

GNC or another health food store may be your best. Talk to a person who is knowledgeable about the products they sell, and ask them LOTS of questions and for recommendations. When you are taking something that can affect your health, there is no such thing as a stupid question or too many questions.

If you do choose to take stimulant diet pills, caffeine or otherwise, please PLEASE avoid mixing them with large quantities of coffee or any other stimulants / "uppers" / speed / crank / etc. If you mix them, you can cause overstimulation of your central nervous system (which I know from experience is a very, very unpleasant thing), heart problems, strokes, psychiatric problems, and a variety of other nasties.

Personally, I cannot really offer any further advice on the subject, that I have not already mentioned in other threads. I hope you find something that works well for you, and that you make safe, healthy, and educated choices in the process.

Just remembered one other thing: Stay far, far away from Dexatrim. That drek caused me to completely lose my appetite for 48 hours, and then it made me spew red, white, and blue.

    Athena,
nothings beats eating correctly and movement. I personally don't care for diet pills, i see far too many people coming into the hospital with a very fast heart rate from them.
You know whats good and filling....water, and oatmeal, along with a regular meal, and a multivitamin. But before yo do anything, i would ask an M.D. or go with a good nutritionist.
    Good luck, Pamela

A wonderful website, that has personal trainers, bodybuilders, and even some dancers is www.elitefitness.com , they can give the worlds BEST advice. I would try a low dose of ephedrine 25-50 mg a day with caffiene, like a cup of coffee, unless you buy a formula wth caffiene. Also green tea speeds the metabolism. Some fitnes competitiors use Primamist, an inhaler with adrenaline, which I do NOT reccomend, as it is highly dangerous.

I've heard good things about Xenadrine EFX, which has no ephedra in it. I haven't tried it. I did use Hydroxycut, which has ephedra. It did work, but when my heart started racing even while I was sedentary, I stopped taking it immediately. I don't recommend taking ephedra-based products but if you do, start off very, very slowly. Like 1 pill once a day for a week, then 2, then 3.

I think all diet pills are harmful. The only way to completely lose weight and keep it off is through a balanced diet, weight training and exercise.

Actually, Xenadrine does have Ephedra in it, and is linked to the recent death of Baltimore Orioles ballplayer - a man over 6feet tall and over 200 lbs!
    http://www.ephedrine-ephedra.com/pag...dra_death.html

A few years ago, before I understood these diet pills, a girlfriend of mine gave me a pill while we were at the gym, telling me it would give me energy - this was at 8am - at 10:30 am, while at work, I collapsed - I became so lightheaded and short-breathed, that everything went gray - like when you look at the screen on a fuzzy television - and I fell over - it was AWFUL - and terrified me. Weeks after, I saw a 20/20 newscast about a 21 year old girl who was taking Metabolift to lose 10 lbs 2 weeks before her wedding - somehow it paralyzed her, and she is now a paraplegic.

The effects of these pills work - I've seen it with many of my girlfriends and girls at work - but the possible consequences just aren't worth it, in my opinion.
Also, if you really think about it, once you are on the pill - it speeds up your metabolism - so when you get off of them - you gain even more weight! So in essence, to get to your desired weight, you have to continuously take the pills in order to even maintain that weight.

If you take anything, keep it limited to things that are ephedrine and ma-huang free- maybe stick only to pills with chromium picolonate- a safer (though not as drastically results-driven) alternative.

This is long, but it is a list of all diet pills that contain ephedra:

i have had very bad experiences with xenadrine. it is a quick way to lose weight, but don't get addicted. it also makes u feel like shit, gives u moodswings, my heart rate seems to be permanently fuct up now, i jus became really unhealthy after using it. and it took me a while to stop using it cos i would get major headaches if i skipped a day, and i was so scared i was going to gain weight. i don't recommend it at all, it is basically legalized speed.

God, thanks so much for everyone who responded to my question. I have been really ambivalent about diet pills. On one hand, I knew the potential risks, but on the other, I wanted some assistance. I work out an avg. of 5 days a week, for 1 1/2 hrs ea. time. I'm pretty careful with what I eat, but I do allow myself to eat shit occasionally. I just wanted something to help me out even more. I'm not sure if I've plateaud, but I don't see as much change as I would like to by now. I just wanted a jump start.

Now reading the potential risks to these pills really made me realize that this isn't the best solution whatsoever for me.

So, on that note...any suggestions? Not to mention, I have almost compltely cut out soda (I just had a small cup of root beer after not having soda for at least 6 mo.) I drink an ungodly amount of water (I've been told too much actually...I have to pee all the time). I eat relatively small portions...sometimes I surprise myself by how small. But there are days out of the month that I eat like my stomach is a bottomless pit (actually, I'm there right now!!!!). Fruits, vegetables, etc. My downfall...I love carbs...especially good grainy and nutty breads. I'm not willing to cut these out. So...any suggestions?!?!

    Thanks everyone again

this was briefly mentioned above, but besides the health effects taking diet pills with ephedra (my experience was with ripped fuel) turned me into a very angry person (I returned to normal a couple days after stopping the pills). I don't mean a little grumpy or mood swings, I am talking full on rage every hour I was awake, normally agood 20 to 22 hours a day, making me look like crap. (I was 17 at the time and was politely asked by my boss to resign my fast food job at bill millers after out and physically threatening a big redneck (nothing wrong with rednecks) after he called me "darlin', so yeah please, please, please be careful what you take how much and for how long

Athena healthy eating for life is simply cutting back on the portions you eat. Instead of a whole piece of cake, (which is fine), take half.
Instead of that whole tall glass of soda, fill half the glass. The key is moderation, and with moderation comes motivation.

Don't cut foods out of your eating pattern, just cut back. And NO bedtime snacking.
Up the cardio some. You will lose, and look great.
PS throw the damn weight scale out. Just look in the mirror from time to time, much better than a scale!

Jax and Pamela are right on the money-

I used Hyrdroxycut, and my BF noticed a BIG change in my mood, I was very negative, and curt with everyone. My mother came to the rescue. She lost a great deal with the help of Weight Watchers. She taught me about portioning food, encourageing healthy eating (salads, lean chicken), but treating yourself. If you crave that mac-n- cheese, include a small portion, you won't feel guilty or deprived. You start to see a slow change in yourself, your not prone to jump to these foods any longer, and the cravings die down considerably. Your body no longer associates "comfort" with those "comfort foods." I am a fan of NYC deli/salad bars for this purpose. Awesome salads, with just a little something extra if your want a change of pace.

    hope this helps!

You might also try alternative weight loss treatments like hypnosis or accupunture. These certainly won't harm you, and who knows maybe you have a lot more power in your brain than you are currently accessing. I have a friend who quit smoking with hypnosis, and she hasn't looked back.

You also might try a different work out routine. If you normally do step aerobics switch to circuit training. If you normally do weight lifting throw in some yoga, too. When you do the same activity over and over your body learns to adjust to that activity. Our bodies are very efficient, and will do everything they can to make life easy on us. By starting a new and different activity, your body will burn more calories per hour than if you were to have an equal exertion in an activity that you do often.

This was made painfully clear to me when I started dancing. I thought I was in great shape. I was a regular mountain climber, and I had no car so I would ride my bike everywhere, often times with a small trailer or heavy backpack. I could easily ride 30 miles a day without feeling too worn out. After my first night dancing my thigh muscles were so sore that I could barely climb the stairs of my apartment. By the third day I had a real hard time going in to work because it felt like I had torn the muscles in my thighs, and walking was very painful, heck it even hurt to wear stockings because of the pressure of the elastic. By the sixth day of my work week (last day) I was feeling better, but very glad of having a day off.

I also lost some weight on my first week dancing despite eating like a pig, and not going to the gym once.

    Not "diet" pills... just multivitamins.

I find that adding a little spice to your foods will also help increase your metablic rate as well - that is one my old time sure fire ways to give my metabolic rate a kick.. add some tabasico, cayayne or anything else to your foods to "heat/spice" them up.

I agree with Paris.. make sure you aren't too routine with your exercise. This is why I have so many damn exercise videos because I like having the change.. I just make sure I'm doing something 3 times a week.

I don't like the gym so I can't relate to anyone who does use one. I like to do stuff at home.

I'll give you a plan that will get you quite lean. First, you have to eat 6 meals a day (small meals). Try to eat a gram of protein per lb of bodyweight, so if you weigh 110lbs you eat 110 grams of protein spread over your 6 meals. As an illustration a chicken breast has about 25 grams of protein. Keep carbs at 100 grams a day on non workout days, and at 200 grams on workout days. Avoid all white starches, that is white bread, rice, potatoes, flour. Don't eat junkfood/fastfood. Drink a gallon of water a day. Avoid softdrinks and alcohol.

Now it's best to not get any ephedra products as they are being banned anyway. The ephedra free versions are crap, becasue its the ephedra/caffeine combo which is so effective. Without that the product will be a waste of money. Look into a product ccalled Hot-Rox made by Biotest www.t-mag.com. It contains 7 keto DHEA, guggul, caffeine, and a proprietary ingredient called Scleremax. Much more effective then ephedra, and no jitters or rapid heart beat. Much safer.
