How light are you planning to go? If its a big change I strongly suggest you let a pro do it.

I am going to have to agree and advise you to get it done by a professional. My hair was dark brown and I dyed it platinum blonde a few moinths ago. I got it done at a salon and it involved a triple process bleaching system, which I know I couldn't have done myself. Also, salons have gentle bleaches that don't damage the hair shaft as much as peroxide. I think you should go for it though, I love being a blonde!

Unless you just want to go a LITTLE bit lighter, I also suggest going to a salon. It's more pricey but their chemicals are less harsh and damaging to your hair. It will look better that way.

First your dark hair needs to be stripped of it's colour, then the new colour put on. Only a salon can do that change with little damage. THat is a BIG change. And very do-able. But i would not try at home. You may end up with red/orange highlights in certain areas. ANd that if you are lucky. Good luck! Pamela

and the maintenance is a pain in the ass...dark roots so much more obvious sooner than other colors of hair. I too went platinum blonde for many yrs until I just had ENOUGH of bleaching the roots every 2 weeks so I didnt look like an inverted skunk.
Maybe try a light brown or try layers of color in all ranges of light medium and dark brown, also making the regrowth less noticable.
I went back to my brunette - I miss my blonde sometimes but damn so much easier and healthier and longer etc now that I dont fight nature. For fun I recently added streaks in front of varying lighter shades of brown to my really dark brown/black hair...
Just an option you may want to consider.
    Good luck be careful!

Black to medium brown can be done at home safely, as long as it is with a few, say like no more than three shades from your current color, and thats pushing it b/c two is the usual you can safely go at home. However, hair color is becoming more complete and has multidimensional color that colors every strand. Damn, I sound like a commercial.
Neway, u say your hair is jet black. Thats pretty dark. One safe way is to buy the color u are interested in and try it out on a one inch wide group of strands in the back near the nape of your neck, this is one of the hardest areas for color to take, but this will give u a preview as to what works for you at home or not.
I home color and do salon depending on what I am doing to my hair. My hair is dark brown with reddish kinda lights, naturally and its also curly. I go up to auburn safely at home with a box of Feria, dark and lovely, lady clairol or garnier nutrisse depending on if I want reddy auburn, strawberry blondey auburny or orangey auburn. Each type gives the same basic color, but with different tones. Streaks are done in salon only b/c I had a bad bleach experience at home playing Ms. Vidal Sassoon. If U don't get the lightness u like then off to the salon you go.
