    Default Sickly

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions, thoughts, or advice for me on this one. I am continously getting sick. It's to a point where I'm starting to get slightly concerned. And I can't pinpoint anything wrong with me, or how I live my life. I sleep 7/8 hours a day, eat relatively healthy (a good amount of fruits and vegetables) and not too much, excercise 5 times a week for approx. 2 hrs each time, and take multi-vitamins on a daily basis. So, what the hell am I doing wrong?! ???

I was sick with a cold all weekend . Last weekend I broke out in hives, and I don't even know what the hell I'm allergic to. About a month ago, I had a horrible inner ear virus that caused vertigo, and it knocked me on my ass for a good two weeks. I'm a mess, and I'm only 22 years old!!! I should be taken out back and shot like the decrepid old horse that I am!

    Any advice...anything?

well, just like school classrooms, dance clubs can be a spot where people from all over the place congregate and share germs. However, the higher levels of personal contact in dance clubs increase the odds that somebody else's germs will get you. Even if you eat well, get enough rest, and live a healthy lifestyle, if your body is constantly bombarded with new germs before it has finished fighting off the last ones, your immune system may always be stuck in second gear. That's why I'm a firm believer in antiseptic baby wipes between every stage set at the club, and a super shower the minute I get home from dancing live. I also take Echinacea daily for an immune system boost.

There's also a supplement called VitaBiotic, made by Ecclectic Institute. You can probably find it at your local health food store. Taken regularly, it can do wonders for your immune system.

I agree with both Melonie and Candigrl. And not to bring too scary a thought, but it's a good idea to get tested for hiv. I get tested annually, and I believe we all should. You just never know...

Another thing, do u smoke? I have noticed that people who smoke, have parents who smoked in the household they grew up in, or are constantly around it, work-duh, get sick with minor stuff like colds, coughing, sneezing and worse more often than others. They are more susceptible to disease and germs b/c they have weakened immune systems.

You could have an allergy. I was in a very similar situation to you. I went to an allergy specialist and got tested for all sorts of things. It's a pretty simple process where they place a drop of water containing the possible allergen on the skin, and then make a small scratch. It doesn't hurt, doesn't scar or even create a lasting impression (my arm was clear within the day) - although if you find an allergy it will itch.

I found out I was allergic to dust mites. They are everywhere - particularly in bedding. So I have to take certain precautions, sleep with special bedding, try to stay away from places that are too dusty, and I have to vaccuum every few days & dust my house regularly.

I have certainly noticed a mega difference. And if I'm not careful - I notice that too when I suddenly get a head cold in the middle of summer!

When I was younger, I got hives whenever I got sick. The doctor finally decided I was allergic to something about the cold. Allergies do come and go, it's possible.

It's not mono is it? I've never had it, but it kinda sounds that way.

Hi Athena, what you need is a "complete" check up. You say this is not you, and one sickness after another keeps popping up.
Many factors can do this to you. Stress, run down, etc. However if you have been on antibiotics for your inner ear infection, they too will wipe you out of your good bacteria, which in turn can cause any number of hosts to move in. I would go for a physical, blood work and all. And if you are tired, rest. This is your way of your body telling you (obviously) you are not your healthy self at the moment. I would not do guess work with my health when i keep getting sick, see a good doctor.
Then again i work at a hospital and see too many people wait too long only to find out it is a virus that has to just run it's course. For anything viral, doctors should not prescribe antibiotics. Antibiotics don't touch a virus, but if you also have something bacterial going on, you would need an antibiotic. If you go on them, eat lots of yogurt, to put good bacteria back into your body that the antibiotics will kill. (along with the bad bacteria as well, which is a good thing.)
    Lotsa luck, get better! Pamela

Like I have said previously, you guys rock my world!!! There is always a wealth of information here.

Anyway, to offer a bit more info:

I am not currently dancing...so that rules out the excessive germs from clients possiblity. I don't smoke either, nor am I usually in a smoke filled room. I get tested for HIV at least once a year, but I try to do it every 6 months or so (I'm an AIDS educator, so I'm a little cautious or paranoid, whichever sounds right!!!). And I'm not currently on antibiotics, and haven't been in awhile. When I had the inner ear virus, I was placed on some medication that treated the vertigo, but since it was a virus, the medication were not antibiotics. Not only that, but I haven't taken that medication in about a month now.

I probably should go to my doctor's and get a massive check up, but I know myself, and I'm an asshole, and I won't go because I have work, or I go to the gym, or I'm tired, or whatever other excuse I can find. Not very constructive, I know.
