    Default Self-Tanners

Hi. I've already received a ton of advice on how to apply such products, however I was wondering if any fake tanned people out there would share their favourite brands. I want something that won't make me orange.

    Thanks

Coppertone's Endless Summer is my personal favorite - long-lasting and natural-looking.

I don't know how pale anyone's skin is here, but I have very white skin naturally - can't tan no matter how hard I try (typical red hair/pale skin thing). Anyhow, someone had recommended Coppertone's Endless Summer to me and I was less than pleased with the results. I've seen it on others who are able to tan and it does look great, but on my skin it was a bit too orange for my taste.

I highly recommend Clarins self-tanning gel for your body. I use it all over except for my face. I also use the self-tanning au lait for face & neck only on my face, though. The stuff for the face comes in dark and light formulas ( I use the dark - it's really not all that dark - saves from reapplying everyday). Also, it is not necessary to get the special one for the face; the one for your body will not damage your skin, clog pores, etc. I've spoken with a few of the people at the counters and they've all told me the only real difference is that the facial one also includes a sun block. Other than that, they say there is no difference. I, myself, do not always buy the separate one for the face, sometimes I will simply use the one for the body all over and I've never had any problems with it.

I've found that all of the cheaper brands that you can find in drug stores turn me orange. The only luck I've had is with Clarins (although, I haven't tried any other cosmetic brands). I do know Clinique just came out with one and it's supposed to be pretty good also.

Also, Jenny - make sure you ask Kylee on the other board. I recall me and her having a similar discussion on Tre's old board and there was another cosmetic brand one which she had recommended (I forget which it was now).

I use nutrogena Instant Bronze. It is a little streaky going on because it is tinted dark, but that makes it easy to see where you have applied and where you missed. I just put it on at night before bed and then shower off the streaky-ness in the morning. The streaky -ness is only from the aplication and does come off right away when you shower leaving you with a nice even tan.

As with all tanning products, the more you use the darker you get! I apply every day for about four nights to get a nice base going, then about every third day to keep the color up.

I usually mix self tanning with tanning beds so that I am not always exposing my skin to harmful UV rays. About the middle of winter I will start hitting the tanning beds just for the emothional lift more than for the tanning.

    Jenny-
A lot depends on your skin color! I'm also a makeup artist of 6 years for fashion and film, and sometimes what works for some, looks terrible on others. Key points are to test, and blend...

If you're fair-skinned, something more subtle is good - aways test your skin.. if you're darker, then something more dramatic. I'm half asian, so I look better when I just go to the tanning bed...otherwise, Christian Dior's bronzer is a beautiful color - and it's a bronzer, so you can see what color you'll be ahead of time.
*Exfoliation is really important in order to stay away from streaks. Clinique makes a good Peppermint Body Scrub for this
*Apply a light moisturizer beforehand, as well, unless the self-tanner duals as a moisturizer.
*If you want some extra color Alchemy makes a great powder brush on bronzer that gives your face a realistic sun-kissed look. Many times girls will self-tan their bodies, but neglect their faces. Try not to use body self-tanner on your face, because it contains mineral oils that tend to make you break out. Dior also makes a face bronzer with built-in spf protection..

    ...and you're all set!
    G'luck!

Has anybody tried the self-tanning booths? (Mystic Tan or Mist-on Tan) It's so much faster than applying it yourself (about 1 minute) and I think it gets me darker and more even. I like the Mystic Tan booth, it's a little neater but more expensive. But I think the Mist-on tan booth gets me darker plus the cost is lower. But I am biased! My boyfriend owns a Mist-on salon. But seriously I swear by it. I go twice a week and I will never go back to frying my skin w/ UV rays.

Sorry didn't mean to sound like a faggy commercial, just wanted to share my joy.

I'm with Rochelle on this one. I usually am in the tanning bed a minimum of once per week but sometimes don't have the time-especially when I'm traveling. The Neutrogena Instant Bronze really is the best I have come across. Sometimes when I am on the road & I need an instant tan it works perfectly! I like the foam & the cream but prefer to use the foam then the cream for the moisure.
They really get the job done & if you have a base tan these products can really extend your tan!
    Hope that helps!

    Alexa,
I've never heard of these booths. Can you give me any more information about them? Sounds really interesting! Thanks in advance!

I found the info on the booths here: http://www.mystictan.com/

One of the girls at my club is a mystic tan user and it looks real and is very even. I had no idea we even had one here, but now that I know I am going to try it out.

Both Mystic and Mist-on have distributor web-sites which should offer a list of locations. Also, the craze is spreading fast, so new ones are popping up all the time.

I always use self tanners because I have really fair skin so I can recommend the best ones to use. (I think anyway) Lancome's flash bronzer spray is really good. It dries instanly and the color is great. Lancome also makes a mousse that has a nice shimmer to it and that gives great natural looking color. Also, Estee Lauder's go bronze is really good. The best one is the one in the brown tube. Anyone of these will definately do the trick. They don't streak and they dry quickly. Sometimes I use a combination of the flash bronzer and either the mousse or the go bronze.
    good luck!

I just used a Mystic Tan thing for the first time... I LOVE it. It's like the perfect tan that I can never exactly get from a bottle (it's always a little light here or a little dark there or my feet always have white spots on them). It does have all of the problems you get with bottle tans... make sure you use the barrier cream very liberally on your hands and feet and just a little on your knees and elbows.

Also if your claustraphobic or have an aversion to standing on a metal plate having very cold wet stuff blasted on you and making it hard to breath, just skip it...

Lena, Where did you do the mystic tan? Does anyone know where I can find this in Manhattan?

Missy, I don't know where in Manhattan you're located exactly. I went to the website to see what ones may be close and it named one in Astoria (another one coming soon), one in the Bronx, and another in Hoboken, NJ. There were a few other fairly close ones in NJ that it named.

The one it named in Astoria was Beach Bum Tanning (www.beachbumtanning.com). Beach Bum does have additional locations in Manhattan, though. So, maybe they have the Mystic Tan booths at those locations as well. Try calling them.

Mystic-Tan works great for me and I am a pale olive with light brunette hair. The only thing is that it feels kind of sticky while you are letting it dry and if you go too dark, it looks funny when it is coming off.

It is great before an audition, though!

My new favorite for when I get sick of my pale look is Aruba in a Tuba by Benefit. It gives me a very natural bronze look without looking too dark.

I have been fake tanning for years and have tried almost every brand out there and can highly recommend st tropez - either the spray mist or the foam. the difference is the mist/spray tends to turn out a bit darker and the foam is a bit more moisturising (if u have drier skin).
but honestly if u r worried about turning orange st tropez is brilliant. it has something in it that stops skin from turning orange - its some sort of green toner (u cant see it and u wont turn green).

literally everyone at my club swears by sally hansen airbrush legs. it isnt the same as self tanner but it gives you a tan glow(i know that sounds cheesy but literally it makes your skin glow haha) and we all love it!! plus it's even and you just spray it on and head out of the dressing room.. no fake tanner smell, no streaking, nada.

I've used a lot of sunless tanners and always liked Banana Boat. I really, really like the newer moisturizers with tanner in it to "build up" your tan over several days, so it's not like one day pale and the next BAM you're lookin tanorexic. Alot of gals like Jergens but I can't stand the smell. Olay is good too and smells nice. I absolutely love this stuff I got from Wal Mart, a line called Malibu Hemp. The consistency of the moisturizer is thick, smells good, and the DHA (Dihydroxyacetone-the ingredient that "tans" you) doesn't turn you orange or too tan right away. Cheap too! I think my bottle, which is 12-16 oz. was $5-$6.

Edit(I haven't used mystic tan in a couple of years. It just doesn't fade well on me. Especially my face. I now use L'Oreal Sublmime lotion in dark. But I use before I go to bed and use the Sally Hansen on my legs up to my hips. It works well and nobody has guessed that I use a self tanner.)

My body chemistry must have changed in the last year, because I used to get nice color from a few products, but now they all turn me yellow!! Looks tan in the club lights, but when I go outside.....

The Malibu Hemp seems a bit better, but I only use it to get rid of the pasty white look, I don't bother trying to get an actual tan look with it. Tired of looking yellow. Seems everything I try lately does it. I think the Hemp one works for me because it is very very light color if you only use it once or twice a week.

Lately I haven't bothered at all, because, even though I don't have that lovely alabaster shade of white, my skin still glows under the black lights which I think looks kind of cool.

Anyone else have problems with turning YELLOW?

I just got home from the tanning salon and used a new "pre-treatment" lotion to prevent the funky smell I always have after I do the mystic tan. Its been an hour and I have no smell whatsoever!

Britt- A few girls used the sally hanson leg stuff at my old club, and got stuck with the dry cleaning bill of a custie's pair of light colored pants when it totally rubbed off on him!! I don't think it was fair a managment, but beware that it rubs off!

My favorite self tan treatment is fantasy tan. I can't say enough about it. I started a thread by that title, so if you want more info... It is expensive though.

My favorite drugstore self tanner is loreal sublime bronze. I like the one with the bronzers in it to make you look tan right away. But, it rubs off, so before work I'd use the quick dry gel version.

My fave dept store self tanner is lancome flash bronzer. The liquidy one in the pump spray bottle w/ spf 15 in it. It dries quick, so be careful.
