Default Hair (like the on-your-head kind).

There is a hormone your body develops while you're pregnant that stops your hair from falling out. Or perhaps while you're pregnant you stop making the hormone that causes your hair to fall out. (I mean normal falling out, not hair club for men falling out). Does anyone have any idea what it is (or isn't)?

From what I have read, your hair does not shed as much as normal as a result of increases in the normal levels of estrogen and progesterone. These increases cause the hair to enter an extended anagen (sp?) phase (the growth phase). About two months or so after childbirth, the hormone levels have returned to normal and your hair will actually shed more than the average amount (hair is now in the resting phase). Then in another month or two, the rate at which your hair sheds will level off and return to normal. This also is named as a cause for hair thinning after menopause due to the decrease in the amount of estrogen that your body produces.

    Hope that helps!

I don't know why pregnant women have such awesome hair, but I have heard some attribute it to the prenatal vitamins they take. Folic acid is supposed to benefit hair and nails as is silica.

Tons and tons of biotin will make your hair grow faster. It's the main ingredient in those hair/nail vitamins. If you take mass amounts of it your hair will grow like crazy!

All I know is that a few months after the birth of my last child my hair started falling out like crazy! It has slowed down now and is growing back, but my child is coming up on a year. I did question my hair dresser about it and she said it was because I had had a baby. Just glad that things are returning to normal!

You can buy Biotin at small drug stores, health food stores, etc.

I bought mine from Bartell Drugs, and it cost less than $5.00.

Prenatal vitamins are good as well. I took them a long time after my daughter was born, and it kept my hair and nails in nice condition.

I don't have any problems with my hair, its very long and nice, but the Biotin just adds to it.

And I swear by Prenatal Vitamins. As mentioned, they rock for bopth my hair and my nails. But they are pricy - usually around $15-$20 for a bottle. But so worth it. Just make sure not to take them with milk, because the calcium binds the iron in them, so it is not as readily bio-available. You wonder why that matters, but that extra iron will help keep a gal from bruising quite as much.

I think we should make a list of good dancer dietary supplements to add to the tool-kit - I totally believe in iron for helping ease bruising - even the amount you'll get in a daily multivitamin makes a difference, and for relieving the ones you have I have found homeopathic arnica to be a godsend.
Silica is a lot less expensive than prenatal vitamins and is great for hair and nails.
Anyone else have supplements they recommend?

Post 'em here or in the Tool-kit thread and I'll add 'em. Thanks!
We all imagine ourselves the agents of our destiny, capable of determining our own fate. But have we truly any choice in when we rise, or when we fall, or does a force larger than ourselves bid us our direction. Is it evolution that takes us by the hand, does Science point our way, or is it God who intervenes keeping us safe.

So much struggle for meaning, for purpose. And in the end, we find it only in each other. Our shared experience of the fantastic. And the mundane. The simple human need to find a kindred, to connect. And to know in our hearts... that we are not alone.

B-Complex vitamins... you usually get your daily dosage in your multi and prenatal vits, but ou can also get it by eating more stuff liek wheat breads, wild and brown rices, and dark green leafy veggies, if I remember right....

This stuff keeps EVERYTHING in much better working order, and B-complex deficiencies can lead to all kinds of evil things, including exhaustion and mood swings.

Another thing is Calcium, to keep your bones strong. Why? Because first of all, bones can easily be broken while dancing - I know, because I've done it a few times. Also, a lot of us DO smoke cigarettes, and smoking will deplete your calcium stores. I would get a doctors recommendation on a good calcium supplement, though, because certain brands are formulated to more bio-available than others, and you want the greatest bio-availability possible.

Also, vitamin D is big thing, and about the only part of our diets where it is found is in D-fortified dairy products. You can't really take a dietary supplement for this - at leats, not that I have found, but it is also found in sunlight. therefore, some sunlight or a sun-lamp (especially in winter) could be a good idea for some people.

Those are maybe not quite what people were thinking with this thread, but I find them to be important.

I also find Vitamin C and Echinacea to be extremely important towards maintaining good health. think about it - we play with money all night, and money is some of the most bacteria-ridden stuff in the world, with the way it changes hands. Not to mention the number of people we are exposed to in a given night who could have all manners of contagious junk, from colds to the flu.

As a side note, for anyone who has nervous stomach or drinks a lot, I recommend raspberry or peppermint herbal teas for helping settle the stomach. These also work great during the "morning sickness" phase of pregnancy....

Just to let you know Biotin is a B-vitamin. I have an illness that caused me SOOOO many problems and what it breaks down to is that I cannot have gluten. Gluten is in most breads and cereals. I cannot have wheat, oats or anything with any form of gluten in it. Sooo, my long time friends at the health food store set me up with B-complex, B-1's, a strong mulit-vitamin & a digestive aid, and a gluten-free diet. The gluten free diet sort of forces me to eat a lot of dairy, potatos, and rice. High protein also.
I had slacked on my supplements and my diet so getting back into healthy eating REALLY makes a difference.
When fast food and "easy" foods cannot be eaten it's a lot easier to eat healthy, so I'm getting alot of my nutrients from food instead of supplements.
I am going to look into the supplements for joint pain mentioned here.

Any suggestions on hot and cold sweats?

Hot and Cold sweats? i would try Soy Supplements from the health food store. Soy usually still has its plant estrogen in it, which is what they frequently utilize in herbal remedies for menopause. I've tried it, and to be honest, it hasn't hurt me anyway, but I do believe it has helped. At least it helps with my hormonal balance, anyway....

Some people on this board are very thankful for that!

Hi ladies, i have very long hair, to my thighs at this point. All natural, no extensions! I have been pregnant 3 times right up until my 3rd trimester with 2 then lost them, a perfect birth with my 'now' teenage daughter! And i eat a varied amount of vegetables and fruits. I eat NO MEAT. Well, turkey once and awhile. And take A high potency multivitamin daily. Also When a woman gets her period (this is for the ladis, sorry guys,) I have found even being slightly Low in IRON can cause falling hair! I take an extra small iron pill when my period comes and after it has gone for 5 extra days! And yea ,,,Hormones...has alot to do with hair growth. Also The Tyhroid (did i spell that right) Lot's of women who notice more than usuall hair fall out should have the little gland checked. (thyroid)
TOO much Vitamin A as well is Highly toxic, as well as others, and can cause hair fall out. It's all about an even balance. But a multivitamin is a good bet always.
And lets not forget about stress! Yes it can spin your whole system out of it's normal state.
Old rule of thumb: 100 hairs a day of lose is fine, some a little less , some a little more. Over brushing, over bleaching, dying can all affect your hair. When it falls out, look to see if has a little white bulb looking thing on the one end, if so it came from your scalp. PLus, we all have a resting hair fase we go through, thats normal.
    Hope this helps as well.

Taking prenatal vitamins is key. Not only will you get all the necessary nutrients that your body deserves everyday, but you'll see the difference. By getting all the recommended daily doses of these vitamins it does brighten ur complexion and make your hair and nails grow. You may also want to try scalp massages. That brings more blood circulation to the head.

A girl at work told me that wearing your hair in a ponytail will make it grow. Is there any truth to that?

I take Hair pills, and they have really worked.

    www.californianatural.net

You can also get them at Wal-Mart and there is thread around here somewhere about them (quite long in fact). They are around $4 a bottle.

I also take amino fuel fuel from GNC, it's liquid vitamin that I throw in my smoothies.

I used to take those calcium chew thingies.

But a MAJOR warning with those: If you have had any kidney problems, or have ever had a kidney stone do not take them. Especially if you get enough calcium already. They can just casue you to have more problems and bigger (read more PAINFUL) stones, lol. That's experiance talking there, lol.
