    Hi thatfire,
You don't think you should not be soaking a pad every hour. I would advise you to see your Gynocologist.

Thing is I've been this way ever since I was 11. Sometimes it's a "little bit" better than others. The only thing that helped to bring it under control was birthcontrol but then I would always have break thru bleeding. I just want to know if there is any kind of vitamins or anything that could help. :-/

bleeding that heavily for that long seems really excessive to me. as Pamela said, this is something your gynecologist should know about. every woman has a slightly different cycle with varying complaints, but something that strays that far from the norm, is something you really should have checked out.

when you get a period, your uterus sheds it's lining. it's not all blood... it's tissue and other fluids also. that kind of really excessive expelling of the uterus lining could be a sign that something may be wrong or different in a way that can be dealt with... like having a D+C (dilatation and curettage - same procedure as an abortion but no pregnancy is involved).

in any case, having that kind of heavy period is more then most women would want to have to deal with. i assume since you had taken the birth control before to deal with the problem and stopped taking it, you weren't happy taking hormones... understandable since you can get a variety of unpleasant to down right nasty side effects taking hormones.

doctors always seem to want to solve every problem by dispensing prescription medication and nevermind any side effects or risks involved. since it seems you're interested in a more natural approach to the problem, after discussing the situation with your gynecologist and if the excessive bleeding is considered "normal" for you, you could look into various herbal supplements for that. i know there's supplements that work well controling menapausal symptoms and regulating your cycle to a more uniform 28 days, but i don't really know of any supplements that curb excessive bleeding. you might do well talking to someone who's familiar with herbal supplements (maybe at a specialized shop?), and perhaps they can recommend something.

also, iron deficiency, other vitimin deficiencies, alcohol and aspirin can all cause your blood to become thin, thereby causing excessive bleeding, so it could be that might have something to do with it.

this site has good info about anemia (which Pamela mentioned and is a concern for you with your heavy periods) as well as other menstral/female related problems. *note that it mentions that if your periods are very heavy or last 7 days or longer you should see your doctor...

    http://www.plainsense.com/Health/Womens/anemia.htm

here's another site ( http://www.familyhaven.com/health/dandc.html ) that specifically mentions concerns that excessive mentral bleeding may be. here's a paragraph cut and pasted from this site...

"Your doctor will tell you that a "D and C" is often necessary if you suffer from persistent bleeding. It is especially important for bleeding after the menopause. Many women, who bleed after going through the menopause, have cancer. Others may have a condition of the tissue lining the uterus, which may lead to cancer. Still others have tumors which are not cancerous, but which may cause this bleeding. It is extremely important for the woman who has gone through the menopause and begins bleeding, to see her doctor. Such bleeding is always abnormal and could indicate a serious condition."

also, as Lena mentioned, exercising every day (particular heavier or work outs with weights) can make your period become lighter, although as soon as you stop exercising that heavily, the heavier periods come right back. many woman athletes lose their periods entirely during times of heavier training. when i was a ballet dancer, i lost mine entirely 3 times... the first time for a year and a half, the second time for 8 months and the third time for 6 months.

hmmm... seems like heavy exercising must have something to do with why ballet dancers and gymnasts never really develop breasts and tend to be slim hipped - might have something to do with heavy exercise that starts at a very young age since both ballet dancers and gymnasts start at a very young age (wow, if i started heavy ballet training at a tender age i might not have ever developed the curves i have now.... eeeeeeek!).

I started my period very late (age 16), and experienced extremely heavy bleeding like you describe for about the first two years, then it gradually began to subside. I'm now 29 and for the past couple years my period has slowed to about 5 days with only the first day being heavy, and controllable with super plus tampons every 2-3 hours. I don't know what was the cause of my over-flowing in the beginning, but I'm sure glad it subsided! I hated having to use 3 of those huge gorilla pads every night (hospital kind)!

As for PMS, I found that 1000+ mg of calcium supplements every day got that under control. I was becoming a SUPERbitch with all-day headaches every month, until I had been taking calcium for about 2 months, then I noticed a drastic decrease in crankiness and headaches. I researched on the internet, and found that calcium is supposed to help maintain hormone levels, which helps keep those nasty PMS symptoms in check. I also seem to be even more regular, so maybe that will help some of your bleeding as well??

If you ever want to have kids, don't bother with Depo. A lot of former users are now finding out that their fertility is screwed long-term, sometimes permanently after discontinuing Depo-Provera. Also, Depo may now be a little more difficult to get, as they had to do a major recall a few months ago due to being unable to guarantee sterility of several batches.

I know this because until the recall occurred, I was taking it's little sister Lunelle, which was simultaneously recalled for the same reason.

I can also tell you that I have previously taken Depo-Provera, and I have had some seriously whacked problems with my cycles ever since. Everything from anovulatory cycles where I would go as much as 2 months without bleeding, to bleeding randomly, to having three weeks of bleeding out of every four weeks. I haven't taken Depo-Provera since January 2000, and my body STILL has yet to return to normal.

After checking a few websites regarding feminine problems and fertility issues, I have come to find that this is apparently a very very common phenomenon.

Personally, I would advise going to your gynecologist and asking them to do a full examination. Women in my family have had problems similar to the ones you have mentioned, and when checked, it normally turns out that one of us has polycystic ovaries or problems with endometriosis. Not to scare you or anything, but my aunt just had to have a hysterectomy for this reason. She suffered the symptoms similar to what you mention for years, before she finally got it checked out by a doctor a few months ago.

That is little scary. There are people in my family with this as well, its just its so damn annoying and when I was working in the club I couldn't work for like a week because of this. I have also had ovarian cysts that have ruptured so my stuff is all f*cked up and I'm only 20.I've also been put on depo after I had my first child and after I think the 3rd shot I bled for the whole 3 months. I've been on other birth control but they don't work with my body(break thru bleeding). I'm going to make one last attempt and get on this patch thing that you change weekly hope this works. :-/

    But thanx for the input.

I am not sure of your age, (i see now 20 yrs old) if you have children, may want some. This advice can be heavy for some. But an honest opinion none the less to try and help you. and i am not big on sugery, but maybe you can have a partial Hysterectomy, leaving your ovaries so you won't go into menopause. Just something to speak with your doctor about, periods stop, and no more shedding your uterine lining every month. Then no more bleeding! (please i am not a fan of hysterectomy, but sometimes it does have it's benefits.) My mother had to have the surgery because of fibroids, and heavy bleeding. They left both ovaries because they were healthy and she did not go into premature menopause. Any suggestions to help you hun.

I have had my period since I was 10, gosh that's young, but I get it 5 days in a roll with the first 2 days with bad cramps and 4 days of heaving bleeding. If your getting bad cramps you could ask your doctor for medication but I know people that bleed more than 5 days. Everyone is different.

McCain, how long does one have to be on Depo before the infertility for life thing may happen? I went to Planned Parenthood, and they were not real thorough with me before I got on it.

MissBehavin did i read this right Depo-provera stops fertility eventually?
I never heard such a thing. I was on it, and was told after 3 months (not getting my shot.) or longer it may take up to 7 months or longer to get pregnant. But stop you from getting pregnant after you stop the shot for good? Hmmm, yea how long would that take? If so i am all for it. I need to have a heart to heart with the doc. Lol

    MiissBehavin,

Conventional wisdom says that the average woman could be fertility-impaired for as long as a year after ceasing Depo-Provera. However, many are finding fertility problems that last much longer.

It is uncertain as to how long you must take Depo-Provera to instigate fertility problems. I only took it for six months, and I am still having issues. I have only succeeded in a pregnancy once in three years now,and it failed between 8 and 12 weeks, due to failure to progress properly. That resulted in surgery to circumvent toxemia, which is potentially lethal.

I thoroughly expect that a class action lawsuit may be filed against the manufacturers of Depo-Provera sometime within the next two years, due to the number of women who have problems directly resulting from the use of Depo-Provera.

Funny thing is, my former OBGYN prescribed it after my second child, as he refused to acknowledge my request for a tubal ligation after my secod child, and said he felt I was "too irresponsible" to continue using the Pill (I got PG with my second child on The Pill). Never mind that women in my family are notorious for being too fertile for even the Pill to stop, and I BEGGED him to give me a tubal ligation at the time. Irresponsible? I think not.

Candigirl breast enhancers work on your period as well? And do those things really work on your breasts. So you mean that while the breasts get bigger, my period gets lighter...shit that'll work.

Most of these pills, etc, are based on tidea of utilizing plant estrogen, such as that found in soy foods, etc.

Sounds good in theory, but I've never known anyone personally who has used them because they are usually outrageously expensive.

    Hi redz,
If you want to stop PMSing, you should get endermologie treatment. I worked on a lot of women who were crawling on the floor and after the 1rst treatment, I said 1rst treatment, PMS was gone! If you want more info on this treatment, please contact me at [email protected], I can even send you document from the doctor's office (gynecologist ) where I used to perform this treatment. It is just incredible.
    best regards,
    Diane.
