    Default ? about boots

I have a pair of size 9, black, pigskin, thigh-high 5" stiletto-heel boots. These are very snug, with a zipper at the ankle and laces behind the knee.

But there is a problem here!

These boots are fine in their length, but they are too narrow across the toe. The only store in town that carried them buys all their stock from the same place, and every one of their boots (in both 9 and 10) had the same problem, so I did not have a lot of choice here.

Now i have already had a cobbler stretch the toe area a little, but it is still uncomfortable.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to stretch them some more so that they fit more comfortably?

I am also having some difficulty balancing in them while walking. This is my first set of 5", as I am accustomed to 3-4" heels. Any suggestions on how to correct this? I think it may have something to do with the posture and length of strides I am trying to use, but I am not sure. And I don't care to look like an idiot while walking in them!

You could try dampening the toe every night and stuffing it with something, Maybe the cobbler could make or sell you a pre-made stretcher just for the toe. Balance is off anytime you change heel height. Throws the lumbar and ab region farther forward and strains support muscles in those areas even more to compensate. You'll find yourself walking almost as far "on pointe" as you can in a heeled shoe, but not being able to flex or contract your arches to maintain the line of the foot for balance, or spread your toes enough to make a secure contact base with the floor. So your stride is gonna shorten up naturally because you're basically tiptoeing around for a while. And if you're short like me, it'll take you 3 min. to travel 3 feet.

Take the heel height down 1/2" if you can and wrap or tape your ankles for more support. It will make a difference. If you're successful in stretching the boot and it has a thin leather sole, ask the cobbler to strip the sole and replace it with the thinnest rubber sole he has and stitch it down after it's glued. You have to stretch the boot first though because you'll lose material around the toe when replacing the sole.

Belinda knows shoes and hates wearing them except for walking.

    Belinda,

I appreciate the advice. I am not sure if I can knock the heel hight down myself, because the sole is man-made and seems to be pre-formed. I don't think it would work very well.

However, I think I am going to call the cobbler today and ask how much he would charge to rework the sole and heel to a 4". I have real fondness for acrobatic polework, and I need to have good floor-contact to do that without risking my neck. So I figure if the price is right, then it is worth the reduced risk.

And for what it's worth, I hate shoes myself. If I am not going somewhere public, I am barefoot all the time. I even take them off when driving. But that could also be from living in Redneck-ville as a teenager.... The stereotypical hick kid who goes barefoot all year round?

There are these things called shoe stretchers that I've used on a couple of pairs of shoes and it worked great. They sell them at most shoe stores like footlocker and stuff.

Sometimes, with some shoes, blow drying them when you put them on works. It always works for plastic ones (duh) and has mixed effects with leather.

I really wouldn't go through all the trouble of having them made shorter - you will get used to them. Just think of your toe and the ball of your foot, and think of a straight line from your hips down to your toe.

I know I have trouble in 4 inch heels, when I lean back and the shoe isn't there....

i've been getting used to my first pair of five inchers myself. wear them around the house, just sitting around at first, to get your feet used to the position. try walking for short distances, like across the room to get the tv remote. at first, you'll pretty much fall over constantly- so make sure you have something solid to grab, like a wall or a boyfriend! after wearing them becomes comfortable, standing in them will be your next major step, and if you've been walking short distances, this shouldn't be hard. stand for a few minutes to work on balance, then try walking a few steps. stand again. after you master this, try walking from one room to the other, working on balance first, then grace. eventually, you'll be able to walk gracefully, but i'd say definately practice for 5-10 mins twice a day until you get it, then keep practicing atleast once a week so you won't lose the ability. as for stretching it, try putting a small apple or potato in the toe each night after oiling and rubbing the leather to make it soft.

You cobbler should have stretching lotion for your shoes. The kind I use comes in a ltiile red bottle with white printing . You put it on the shoes while you are wearing themand the leather will stretch to fit you feet. You will get a perfect fit this way.
