    Default lawyers/accountants

I have a very naive question:

How safe is it to call up a lawyer or a CPA or whoever and say 'Hi, I'm an escort, how do I pay taxes or do whatever it is I need to do on my income so that I can use it and not get audited'?

I know this is a dancer's board but I'm assuming you ladies have similar problems as escorts (money's all in cash, etc.)

Do I need a lawyer or a CPA or both?

(I'm in NYC area so if anyone wants to reccomend someone that would be amazing.)

Sorry for being a newbie and asking for info before giving it, but hopefully there will be a topic in the future I can weigh in on and give back.

I don't know about a CPA, but anything you tell a lawyer is completely confidential (attorney-client priviledge). Ideally you could look for a tax-lawyer, or a lawyer who has has the CPA credential. They can be expensive, but a regular lawyer can probably help as well.

I don't see why you would be too concerned, escorting is actually a "legal" job. Just file, and don't hide anything money wise. A lawyer would be great, but cost alot more money.

Do you need a lawyer to keep you out of trouble for having sex with clients ? I am not saying you sleep with them, but an accountant will work just fine for an escorting job!!!

    Good luck,

I all likelihood an accountant is not going to give a tinker's damn what you do, and a lawyer conversation would be priveleged. Unless you are also doing something else which would raise some other agencies attention, no one is going to care.

Given the legal risk you run, valid or not in court on a facual basis, I sure would want a lawyer who knew who I was, and did not say "who?" if you called.

Hire the best criminal defense lawyer in NYC. Pay him his retainer. Listen to him as he carefullly explains the law to you. Then if you get arrested, tell the police nothing more than the name of your lawyer.

I wouldn't mention anything more than I'm self-employed when first calling to set up an appointment. Most likely you will initially speak with a secretary, and the secretary doesn't need to know what you do for a living. I'd go for a male accountant, because he would most likely not care about your business. And you should have a lawyer on retainer who knows what you do for a living. Same thing with them - don't disclose to the secretary when you're calling to make an appointment if it makes you uncomfortable.

Speaking as a CPA, I really don't care what you do for a living, although knowing what you do makes it easier to help you find deductions. The charm/fantasy/whatever the hell you want to call it of having dancers or escorts as clients wore off long ago. Now I just want to help them optimize their taxes.

I would not recommend going to an H&R Block type of service. Going to a CPA should save you a lot more than the CPA's fee in taxes. Find a CPA who does a lot of work with self-employed persons, as they will be the best to help you find deductions.

And, as an unabashed plug for myself, if there are any dancers in the Las Vegas area looking to get their taxes done, send me a message and I can help you out. More than that, we can look at other options you might have for both optimizing your taxes and doing things like setting you up for retirement, making college courses tax deductible, giving you a health plan and the like.

Edit: Although I say in the LV area, I can also help those in other areas because of the power of the internet. Its just easier to do some of the tasks face-to-face (such as going over the return, reviewing various planning options and the like) than over the phone/by e-mail/in a chat.
