This [sort-of relates to money issues, as charitable contributions can reduce your tax basis. I found a good website that analyses charities and where their donations really go. It's pretty comprehensive:

Choose your issue - social, environmental, feminist or otherwise, and take a look at their financials on this website.

Whilst we are on this topic. I would like to post a link to a book I bought (not the same as the link posted in the previous message)

    http://www.auscharity.com/
The leading portal and source of information on the Australian charitable sector.

I highlighted Australian to make sure everyone is aware it is mainly for Australians.

I personally have set up a monthly donation pledge with WWF Australia. Since I can afford to do so with at least three other charities for the same amount ($15 per month).... I am using this website/book to help me out.

Which charities does everyone else support?

All my charities fall mainly into the following categories:
Animals and/or Environment and/or Local or National

About 2 years ago I donated an SUV to the United Cerebral Palsy charity. They were very nice people and most grateful for the donation. I hope the vehicle worked out well for them.
