I originally desired a Toyota Paseo... now my desires have turned to the New VW Beetle.

Just FYI.. I don't plan on doing many road trips it would mostly be used for daily use to the shops, appointments, around town and maybe just outside of town. I usually travel by plane if I go interstate. I also want to purchase a car to help me get between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The biggest length it will probably travel is from Gold Coast (Queensland) to places like Byron Bay or Townsville/Noosa. Otherwise, I will use plane or train.

Which car would suit me? Should I buy new or used? Any advice, tips, etc you can pass on to me would be fantastic.

How much would I need to buy one of these outright?

I'm not buying a car right now.. I might buy one next year. Will this impact on the cost (etc)?

Well I know it's not practical at all, but I am in love with older exotic 2-seater types. Particularly, early to mid-70s Mercedes 450SL, Triumph TR6, Opel GT, and some others that are way out of my price-range! Only bad thing is it is impossible to find that type of car down here. My next car is going to be a Honda Element EX, in a couple months dammit! In a few years I'll indulge with one of my dream babies..... [drool, drool drool]

Well, I finally broke my own rule and did it. One NY sales rep's Subaru WRX came up for sale with 1600 miles on it, a full warrantee, and $4,000 off - so I just bought it !

I was in the Auto industry for 8 years, and Melonie is right on the money. So is the idea of buying a certified used car, although they are usually more money. I would never buy a used car without a warranty, but remember, manufacturers warranties are sometimes 75-100K miles, so if it is still in effect, dont buy a seperate one. Also, warranties are almost all profit. This is why dealers can sell a new car for invoice and still make money. a $1,500 warranty probably has a dealer cost of $500, so negotiate! Also, not all extended warranties are the same! Never ever buy a non manufacturer extended waranty. These are typically fly by night companies and it's like pulling teeth to get repairs. Only by a manufacturer warrenty or one from a major lender or insurer like Wells Fargo or Allstate. Sam's Club and Costco also sells good vehicle warrenties.

Again, just like health insurance, a used car warrantee is a bet that some majorly expensive breakdown is going to occur during the warrantee period which will cost you more out of pocket than the warrantee would have. If you're contemplating an exotic or 4WD or European made vehicle, potential repair costs for a blown engine or transmission can be staggering. On the other hand, similar major breakdown repair costs for a plain jane American or Japanese vehicle might be much lower due to the availability of aftermarket parts.

You also need to evaluate the book value of the vehicle versus potential repair costs, your own need to have a vehicle repaired immediately in the event of a major breakdown etc. when deciding about purchase of an aftermarket warrantee.
