Default Yet another DJ question ....

Here's a dumb one (but you know ... they say the only dumb question is the one never asked ...)

Now that I see the roll of DJ in a gentleman's club is that of one who A) plays the music, and B) talks A LOT on the mic - do you work WITH a mic attached to your head a la Janet Jackson in concert or are you forced to juggle your CD's/records while holding a mic or working with a mic stand? How's it done these days? Inquiring minds want to know ...

    Hey there,

At the club where I work, all the DJ's use a hand-held mic.
I'd imagine that a mic & head-piece combo would be much easier to work with though.
    Take care,

    Nikki

Actually it isn't really a dumb arse question because it may help some people to understand how many jobs us DJ's have to do at once.

I put in a radio station type mic stand a while back which is spring loaded and makes it easier to move around while I'm doing a lot of other things.

The worst case scenario for me which happens sometimes is one hand on lighting desk, other hand on follow spot while changing CD's, talking to the next dancer on the phone, talking on the mic and checking levels of music and even sometimes having the owner tell me how he wants me to advertise. But these all happen only when we have international features and not all the time. Most of the time mic gets left on so I can deal with everything else, apart from of course when I have to talk to the next dancer about her show.

Lucky fior me at least i get to sit down while doing my job

Most Dj's i have worked with have a headset on to hear the music, and have a mic that is attached to the table. Of course they only wear the headset to hear their music playing or ingnore certain dancers i was told.

I've seen all three ways (headset, handheld, Mic Stand).
I would think that even though the headset looks cooler and frees up your hands more than holding the mic, the Mic Stand is probably the best because you don't have to pick it up/put it down and you can leave it on all the time as long as it is set up to only pick up sounds close to it (so some dancer in your booth bitching (swearing) about a customer doesn't project herself over the PA).

Whereas, with the headset, you'll probably have to constantly turn it on/off from the belt box (like Monday Night Football refs), or if you choose to leave it on all the time, probably have to move the mic away from your mouth after every announcement so that you can talk to the dancers/managers in the booth without what you say being heard throughout the club. This constantly moving the headset mic away from/towards your mouth may/may not be better than a hand-held or Mic Stand, depending on how much you have to do while you are speaking....such as DJ Lewi pointed out.

I use the standard mounted mic when I'm in the booth and a headset mic for special occasions when I'm on the stage introducing something, ie birthday party, etc....
