Default So have YOU removed your file-sharing software?

As of last Thursday, June 26, the RIAA has allegedly begun gathering evidence against individuals offering music over P2P file sharing programs like KaZaa, etc. If you live in the U.S., are running one of these applications and are sharing MP3's (particularly a large collection), you could find yourself facing fines of up to $150,000 per song that you are offering.

I've uninstalled my file sharing app just as a precaution. The first lawsuits are scheduled to be filed in August.

I read the article... how can you change the peer to peer settings on Kazaa so that you can't be tracked? I moved my songs into a non-sharing folder, if that does anything to protect me.

The scariest thing about this ruling that I can read into it isn't the fact that they can use this stuff now but that they have more then likely been collecting information for month's, even year's and now they can use that information against user's legally. so I will assume they will bust user's they caught a year ago with outrageously large share that may have removed that share before the 26th.

My husband used to be a club DJ and over the years has bought thousands of dollars worth of music. So if he downloads a song he has previously paid for at some point in the past, is he still violating copywrite laws? He doesn't elect to let peers to upload.

The article said that the lawsuit would not initially target people who elect to not share their files and to change the peer to peer settings.

What scares me is that alot of people i know are now sending each other the site through AIM ICQ Yahoo IM, because it's a paid site i hear (i don't use it, dont care for Kazza), just to bypass paying a small fee for the year, i believe they said it was a year. Could be wrong about the site, but this is what i am hearing now.

Kazaa is a free site. Don't know what their future plans will be though.

I read that all the people that have been prosecuted so far were the ones making their downloads available for uploading as well...because in that sense you ARE copying it to another induvidual (distibuting it without copyright.)
I looked up on the "how to not get busted for filesharing" website...don't have address handy just now. They said go ahead and disable your share folder ...they seemed to think that would help.

I don't use file sharing much anymore these days. I stick to email lists and such. I used Kazaa/KazaaLite for awhile, and they both suck. I use Limewire, WinMX, and IRC occasionally.

There is a program out there called "Peer Guardian". It supposedly blocks out the known "Spy IPs" and trackers. Haven't used it though.

There are too many private mIRC servers going up and down daily. The RIAA couldnt possibly track ALL the privately owned servers to combat file sharing.

Stop using Kazaa and start using eMule or Limewire.

My so downloaded a movie(new release-still out in theaters) from somewhere (I'm no computer junkie), and columbia pictures traced it to our computer and threatened legal action. Needless to say, he hasn't been doing much dowloading lately.

simple, dont share ascap protected songs. If you share a madonna song, you are at risk. downloading some house mix is pretty safe.

Yes Hon.. I think Limewire is pretty good. You can find just about anything you want on there (I downloaded a bunch of 80's stuff that I could never find on Kazaa). It also shows you the person's connection type too, so you don't get stuck with someone on Dial-Up, if you're on a high speed connect. I haven't run into any viruses on there either, whereas on Kazaa, there were TONS of them attached to music and software files. Arg..

Definitely give it a shot, it's worth it.

Scorpio is 100% right. Do not trade in items which are protected and you are safe from prosecution. If it is not copyrighted it is public domain.

And downloading a current release movie is hanging a sign around your neck saying "arrest me". If you steal a candybar you have a fair chance of not getting caught. If you try to steal the cash register or squishy machine you are likely to get caught.

And the person who asked about dowloading items they owned on cd. The rights you bought when you bought it were to the media, not the song. You have the right to back up the original only. If you bought the vinyl record in 1980 you did not have the right to shoplift the casette, and then shoplift the cd because you already "owned it".
