    Default Vegas Showgirls

I was watching Showgirls last night and it got me thinking. Do they make more money than strippers? I've always thought that it would be so cool to be one... even though I'm really not up to all the rules and regulations... Does anyone know anything about their jobs?

First of all, what do you mean you're not up to their rules and regulations? But as far as these showgirls go (which, honestly, I don't really know jack squat about!) I think it takes quite a bit of training and dedication to be one. And I think only the big time ones make the serious cash. The costumes are beautiful, and everything looks so glamorous, but I think we can make more $$ for "less work" as in , they really put themselves thru hell to be where they're at! But at the same time, I don't really know, and that's just my opinion from what I've seen on tv. I'm sure someone more qualified can answer better for you.

Well, I meant that I thought they had to be a certain height and weight? Plus, lots of training I'm sure. And I also don't think they can blow people off when they're in costume if someone's being rude???? I don't know.

I don't think they really deal with the public in costume (?) As far as height and weight, I think it just has to be proportional to their standards (Belle, you look FABULOUS!) No certain height, just be tiny enough, you know? I guess flexibility is a big thing too. But, I'd think most strippers have that! (except me)

I haven't been around girls in the showgirl shows since I was in dance school (1992-3 at the latest) so this is older info. Here I'm talking the dancers in the Reno and Vegas (and some of the casino cruise) revues. The girls who actually danced in the shows at that time seemed to make $500-600 week. I don't know what the leads did money wise. This was for performing and rehearsals plus costume fittings and promotional events. I'm sure that it's more now being ten years later and that there are other bonuses or incentives.

There were very stringent guidelines for height, weight and hair and skin color. A friend dyed her hair a reddish brown and was suspended from her show until she changed it back. Like in ballet corps, they want everyone to sort of look the same and be interchangeable.

I have seen girls who are just promotional showgirls for casinos and while they get to wear the big fancy outfits, if they are not dancers, I doubt they get paid as much (most girls I'd known in these shows had been dancing since they were small children). Those girls do interact with the public in costume and represent their casino so good behavior is a must.

Sometimes, promotions companies book showgirls for events and that can be worth doing since your height and weight can vary more (obviously still proportionate but you can get away with being taller). One such company is Road Shows which puts on Street Vibrations in Reno and a ton of shows across the country. I think they have a website out there. They do the promo showgirl thing with the headdresses and such and some smaller revues but you only get paid per gig. I'm sure there have to be other companies that do the same thing.

Oh, on a side note, all three of the girls who danced in revues that I knew well on a personal level ended up becoming strippers.

Each show is different. I've lived in Las Vegas for 2 years and I've looked into auditioning for just about every show in town. Here's the skinny; alot of the showgirl shows (ie Jubilee at Ballys) have strict height requirements. I think for Jubilee you have to be 5'7'' minimum plus dance en pointe. You also have to be really strong in ballet and jazz for most of the Vegas shows. There are few shows that accept dancers under 5'6'' as far as I know, magic shows are the only ones. Even the travelling Rockettes have strict height requirements, no matter how good you are.
No to say there is no hope, b/c there will always be opportunities abound.

I've been in Vegas all my life and the only people--guys OR girls who I know who are in shows are tall--like 5'11 (for guys) to 6'0 or taller (for girls) AND have had formal training in dance. Most have bachelor's degrees in theatre or dance.

Not a whole lot of the ones who are qualified for Vegas shows end up stripping unless they get fired for gaining weight or slacking off or unless they waste their money and end up taking stripping as a second job. Most of my friends who are showgirls/guys do that solely.

I met a vegas Showboy? (male dancer in a vegas revue). He told me the same thing...strict height and weight requirements, strict schedules, etc. Plus you have to be a professional dancer, having taken ballet, tap, and often gymnastics lessons.

Moneywise, a showperson can expect to make between $500 to 1200 per paycheck for performing. So that is your pay for one to two weeks worth of work. They are expected to be on call for ALL their shows and ALL their rehearsals (you don't get paid for rehearsals, even if its on a day where there is no show scheduled, i.e. YOUR DAY OFF). Plus sometimes they have to spend some time promoting...a few hours before the show, hanging out in the casino lobby trying to sell tickets.

With hours and job pressure like that, its no wonder quite a few showboys and showgirls quit and become strippers. You could make the same amount of money and work less hours!

Apparently that's how Jenna Jameson did it too. I'm don't know too much about showgirlism though. She said that it was too much time for rehearsals and not enough money and they were too strict. It was a topless show so her boyfriend or whatever gave her the idea, why don't you just strip, it's topless just like the show.

I would think you'd make more money stripping and have more time and freedom. Just my opinion though.
