Default What is the good and bad when it comes to clubs.

I was wondering what is some of things you like and dislike about the clubs you dance at? The reason I'm asking is that I'm going to open a club in the near future and want to keep the ladies happy. Just so you all know it's going to be owned by a handful of law enforcement officers so anything illegal will not be allowed and we want to keep everything legit. We're also hoping that enough guys will visit and pay the door fee so the 10% dancer fee can be waved.

A nice locker room...a great dj...lots of promotion so the club is good...no ugly/fat girls (for some reason a club always has a few of those)...the ability to not go on stage if you dont want to...bouncers/management who is on the dancers side especially when a customer tries not to pay...bouncers/managers who will not let in anyone who isnt dressed nice, who is drunk, etc basically not let the riff raff in...

First and formost: low stage fees and tip out. Pay the DJ - don't make us do it.

Let girls pick their own music - don't force girls to cater to the tastes of older men. Those guys are gonna die someday...then where will we be?

I like a club that understands the need to subdue the moralistic community leaders who seek to close the clubs down. Those right-wingers can make life in a titty bar hell. It seems many club owners are oblivious to the need to donate to local charity etc

A nice private dance area. The best I have seen has a fireplace, a big leather chair and a soft fur rug in front of the fire.

A shower in the dressing room.

    Clean stages

Strict rules regarding who can sit at the rail (tippers only)

    No barefeet dancers

    Promotion!

    Non-alcoholic dancer drinks

    Decent sound system

...however, as long as I am making money ($400+) I can put up with a lot.

I don't think stage fees are all that bad. It keeps the girls that can't cut it out, but I think when first opening, no stage fees is good to attract dancers.

Basically all I want is to feel clean and safe.

While I hate handing my hard-earned money over, I realize it goes with the territory and I really only care about how much I leave the door with.

Anyway, this thread has been done a couple of times before, so you might want to search for it.

I agree with promotion, I like a club that dedicates a least one night a month to amateur nights, the club I'll be going to has one every Sunday night when it's the slowest.

I also like to see good manager/stripper and bouncer/stripper relationships.

You should also look into having a dress lady come.

Two Words: House Mom. My old club didn't have one.

This may be true but that begs the question what is "cutting it?" In my experience a homely girl who provides extras is much more likely to be able to pay high stage fees than a pretty girl who doesn't. High stage fees pressure girls into doing things they don't want to do just to keep their jobs.

Also, many clubs who charge fees don't cap the dancer schedule so whoever shows up can work. When they load up the stage it makes it harder for every dancer to make money.

oops I meant to say can't "cut it"...not cut it out

anyway, I guess the simple answer is don't allow extras

stage fees aren't the only reason girls are doing extras and clubs are overbooking!

i agree with the nice dressing room! ours looks like they put up some cheap plywood and slapped a mirror on it. i also like the promotion thing to get guys in on slow nights....i guess i agree with everything the other ladies have said!

another is for the security/bouncers to actually do more than sit on their ass....especially if we have to tip them.

What the other girls said. Plus, limit the number of girls working at any given time! Too many clubs these days are just letting anyone who appears at the door come in and work, which is cool for adding up the stage fees you collect, but horrible for the dancers trying to make money. If you are relying on dancers to make money in order for YOU to make money, ie, you get a cut of the dances they sell or whatever, it is in EVERYONE's best interest to keep the number of girls on shift capped to a level that allows you to have enough to handle the customers while still allowing THEM to make money too. Balance is key. Find it and stick with it.

I'm thinking you are talking about a smaller club, and in my experience the best of those, for everybody, are those that enforce a schedule and have a strict limit on the number of girls that can work based on the shift and day of the week. What they usually do is have a blank schedule for every week that is filled out by the girls a week or two in advance. You have so many open spots for each shift, and the girls put their names down for the shifts they want to work, until spots are filled. If someone wants to work, say Friday night, and that night is already booked, she can be put down as on-call in case someone calls out for that night. Then make sure that if someone fails to show up without calling at least 2 hours in advance of the beginning of the shift (all girls can abide by this if you enforce it), they are either fined the amount they would normally have to pay for working that night, or lose a certain number of shifts for failing to show up. This quickly weeds out the irresponsible girls you don't want working there. I even worked at one club that wouldn't allow us to work if we showed up even 1 minute late for shift, no exceptions. This ensured they always had girls on time - it was rare that someone showed up late because they knew they wouldn't be allowed to work if they did, and they'd miss out on money they probably needed. The strict schedule worked out well for everyone - kept girls working when they were supposed to, and when the club needed them, and kept the number of girls in check so everyone could make money. You probably won't be able to be quite that strict in the beginning, but you should establish rules early on to get them used to it, and when you get the club going where everyone is making money, it will be easier for you to be stricter. Girls can and will deal with alot of rules when they're making money.

Lastly, treat the girls fairly and with respect and decency. You will have alot more loyal dancers who will do alot more for you that way. Treat them like shit and it will be the beginning of the end for your club and your investment.

Thank you to everyone who posted.
Here are a few of the ideas we had before I posted and it seems some were mentioned in the posts.
Two showers in the dressing room and along with private bathrooms. A fridge with pop, water, and snacks- free for the dancers. Nobody is allowed in the dressing room except for the dancers unless there's a problem, including the owners. The staff (bouncers, dj, ect.) will be off duty cops. The dancers can bring their own music in for their sets. There will also be a washer and dryer available for the dancers outfits in case they get spilled on.
This is only a partial list, if we're on the right track please let me know.

there has to be some restrictions on music. Songs can't be too long, for the girls giving lap dances.

I really think one shower is enough and a washer and dryer is excessive. I can't imagine anyone actually using them. I don't think drinks and snacks are really that important since the housemom usually has that.

Being a dancer, I'd much rather have a free tanning booth. Our club has one and they charge us $6 to use it, but hey, at least it's there!

Like everyon else said, it's all about making money and knowing the management is trying to help that happen. The miscellaneous freebies really aren't that big of a draw.

I Think a good club should have more cameras to prevent theft, a few showers, and shower supplies (kind of like a gym). Good relationships between dancers and management, able to pick what music you want to dance to, costumers have dress codes ( no wind pants) at least one good pole for doing tricks, PLEASE make sure the stage is smooth, I've gotten some pretty bad splinters. Clean stages, poles regularly, and keep bathroomes stocked.

When I said strict schedule, it was under the assumption he's opening smaller club. For a big club, schedule is a pain in the ass for everyone to try to deal with. But still, a cap on the number of girls on shift is a huge issue. It is horrible for the girls to show up for work and find there are way too many girls on shift, trying to vie for a few customers. Example: there should ideally be about a 3-1 customer to dancer ratio in the club (figure about 1 in 3 customers actually spend on dancers). I realize that is difficult to always maintain, but it's not so hard to figure out what nights generally bring in roughly how many customers, and cap the number of dancers accordingly. The girls will GREATLY appreciate it.

Things like a fridge with snacks and drinks, and washer/dryer are really unnecessary and will most likely wind up causing you more headache than they're worth. The girls will abuse those things. You'll catch girls bringing in their whole laundry to wash at work, and taking every last can of soda home in their bags after work. If you're dead-set on having these things, you'd be well-served to get a vending maching for drinks and snacks and a coin-op washer/dryer. One is all you'll need, unless you're talking about a huge honking club.

The most important things to concentrate on to make it good for the girls, is limit the number of girls on shift, promote the place to get and keep customers interested and coming in to spend, treat the girls like business partners, or at least people, instead of walking ATMs, have strict rules (and enforce them) disallowing male staffmembers to date/harrass the dancers/waitresses, keep the place clean and maintained, have enough space and lockers in the dressing room, enforce the rules about extras, and yes keep the bathrooms clean and stocked.

A tanning bed is nice but not a big draw. Above ALL: promote for business, treat the girls decent, and make it possible for them to make good money by limiting the number of girls on shift and keeping club fees and commissions reasonable. The main things dancers care about most are 1) whether they are TAKING HOME good money, and 2) whether they are treated with some amount of decency.

The stocked refrigerator is a nice gesture, but you'll be taken advantage of (as Bridgette mentioned). The idea does have merits, however, as dancers need to stay hydrated and some girls would love to have non-alcoholic choices available without having to waste time at the bar when the bartender is too busy to fetch them a pop or some water. A better, slightly modified version would be to have a stocked refrigerator kept in the employee lounge/office. When the girls would like a fresh cold water or can of pop, they can send a bouncer to get it for them.

    A) The bartender doesn't waste their own time fetching free drinks for dancers when they could be earning their own tips. (Most clubs have free water or pop for dancers)

    B) Puts a stop to dancers whining that they sholdn't have to tip the bouncers- "After all, they don't do anything for me, so why should I pay them?"

    c) Dancers still get complimentary house beverages, like you propose, without you having to re-stock the fridge every few hours because some nitwit emptied the whole fridge and took it all home.

Frankly, the whole idea would be better served by a housemom, but only if you have a club large enough to support a housemom.

I agree that a '7' with fabulous style can easily keep up in a club full of 9's and 10's. But...

A choosy club which will turn away more girls than they hire will attract a higher class of clientele. Additionally, being the '9' in a group of 5's and 6's doesn't make anyone money. The guys assume the ugly (by comparison) girls were hired because they'll blow in the back for $5 extra.

Best idea I can come up with is a 401k. From what I can tell, dancers have an extraordinarily difficult time saving money. For every dance that they do, take $3-5 of that LD money and set it aside in an account for that girl. Tell them if they will contribute anything per dance above that amount, then the club will match it.

Say lap dances are $30. Club can take three, three more for the 401k, dancer gets $24. (As an aside, I don't know why the house takes a cut of the LD sales anyways. They don't make jack off of it.)

or get a water cooler and don't require girls to tip the bouncers...which is what we have and works fine

401(k)s are much more complicated than that. For it to work, our income must come from the employer and must be in the form of payroll deductions.

Personally, I don't care about a fridge, tanning booth, retirement plan, nice locker room or other comforts. I don't stay in any of these clubs long enough to have it matter and I'm not into having any clubs keep my money for any reason. Anyway, keeping girls out of the dressing room seems a high priority for most clubs which is why the dressing rooms tend to be so crummy and have no heat/ac etc. As for drinks, the girls should be selling drinks not getting em for free in the dressing room. Dancers walking around with drinks in hand will sharply cut down on drink sales.

One of the biggest problems I see in clubs is house girls vs road girls. The clubs need a constant source of new girls and most managers will let em work no matter the schedule. As they say: for the right dancer there is always a shift available. Since I travel a lot it would make work a lot less stressful if clubs would have a separate dressing room for road girls. I get soooo sick of listening to house dancers whine about how there are too many girls.

I was aware of that. However, it's close enough to being a 401k without getting overly complicated and "401k" is a term with which even non-accountants are familiar. Being a former accountant, it is amazing how quickly other people's eyes glaze over at the mention of retirement plans and the differences/similarities therein, and the whole lot as averse to mutual funds. I didn't care to get any more boringly detailed than necessary.

And yes, a club is free to set up "401k's" for independant contractors as long as it does not give the appearance of a kick-back to encourage prostitution. Since the potential club owner in question is a cop, in cohorts with business partners/future employees who are also cops, this does not seem to be a relevant issue. It actually has implications that could bode well for strippers, much like the GI Bill has done for the military and enlistedmen.

"We were dismayed when we saw the way average girls blessed with looks were treated and put upon by club owners, being asked to risk their necks and sacrifice to make the Big Guy even richer. So we decided to take action. Now the men and women of Nowheresville can have an exciting evening of clean entertainment, surrounded by performers who are well on their way to college and beyond. We take care of our girls- so our girls can take care of YOU!" (Picture dancers in cliched cheesy publicity shot, such as playing with their kids, while Barry Manilow croons in the background).

I don't understand your explanation as to how the club will set up a retirement plan if we're not their employees.

Also, if you plan to setup cameras in the dressing room to deter theft and catch thieves, actually USE THEM!! Often the dressing rooms have video cameras but when something goes missing and a girl complains, management does not give a shit and does not even bother taking the tape out of the camera and watching it so they can bust the thief

I've seen this happen. Girls who have pull with management get their stuff retrieved, everyone else is screwed! My $.002

Default Re:What is the good and bad when it comes to clubs.

Pay the club staff (DJ, bouncers, valet, housemom etc.) those services should be included in the "tipout to the house" paid by the dancers and not be separate fee's that dancers have to pay out individually. I think its better and much more fair to have one set fee that covers everything.

Separate toilets for dancers & female staff only, preferably in the dressingroom. Dancers shouldn't have to share a bathroom with female customers.

No drink commissions-dancers are there to sell dances not drinks. Waitresses and bartenders sell drinks. I hate drink commissions-it encourages drunkenness and low dance sales.

Best of luck on your business!
