    Default Acrylic nails

I haven't seen any topics about this so I thought I'd create a new thread.

I just recently (four weeks ago) got my first acrylic nails. I've a nervous habit of picking at my nails and thus could never grow them out. It's a simple French manicure with a UV topcoat that makes them glow in the blacklights of the club. I've had many compliments on them. My hands are useless now (as anyone in chat can attest) but I am adjusting.

    1) Do you find that acrylics affect your money in a gown club? Are they worth the upkeep and hassle?

    2) Every week for the past three weeks, one of the nails has broken. Now, I'm very athletic on stage. Plus I'm not used to them, so perhaps it is my fault. But are they supposed to be breaking?

The gal who put them on was excellent, but I've seemed to get her uncle ever since and I'm not enthusiastic about his work. The last time he re-did my nails, the glowing topcoat was very poorly applied and he gave me the fills that later broke. I'm wondering if he isn't quite so good as the first gal, or if I merely need to get shorter nails and learn to be more careful.

ok here goes...i havent worn acrylics in a while but some guys think they are sexy i never seemed to notice wether or not they affect my money...it takes getting used to ..breaking them is normal i'm sure we all break them at some time or another not to mention they are painful when accidentally broken...well you should tell the guy to do them so tha they wont break so easy on the other hand you might have to be a bit more careful in what you do...you can also ask him or the lady if she could do it instead...remember you are spending money therefore you deserve to get what you pay for or ask for

I think a good manicure and pedicure will affect your money. If you look like you take care of your nails, guys (whether consciously or subconsciously) think you are well-groomed and have good hygeine. That doesn't necessarily mean acrylics, but if that's the only way you can keep your nails looking nice, I say go with that.

I havent noticed if they affect my money either, but I am 100% sure that they havent hindered my money. My nails are bitten BADLY, as I am usually a nervous person. ( I dont look nervous or shake, but when anything sets me off, I start to bite until...lets just say I have tiny nails...kinda like britney spears without nails. GROSS)
Yes at first they are a pain in the butt and it will take time before you get used to them. When u go to the salon, just sit and say, "Oh Im waiting for anna (lets say thats her name)
I always do that... cause there are only 2 people at my salon who do great jobs. I always go with John...hes great.
If you say it nicely, it wont look offensive. "Im waiting for anna" and smile. thats it.
I went short the first few months, btu nto too short. Plus if they are long and your nails under are really short, it will be much easier to break.
    Good luck!

I think that it does affect your money a bit. As Emily said, guys will notice if you have a manicure and pedicure, and it looks like you look after yourself more.
I got acrylic nails done about 3 weeks ago. So far none of them have broken at all, and I dance very athletically too. Maybe you should try someone else, someone you feel more comfortable with and maybe they will stay on better.
Also, when I first got mine done they were wy too long and I couldnt do anything! I went for the first 2 weeks with them like this, gradually getting used to it, then about a week ago I got them cut shorter and they are so much easier now cos I was used to the long ones so it doesnt even feel like they are fake now.
My manicurist also said to me that if they are too long, they will be more likely to break.

I've had acrylics on and off since i was 13. I like them. I think that it's very smart to find a nail tech whose work you like. Since this is the lady, make sure from now on you make an APPOINTMENT to see her and her only. This can happen. If for some odd reason, they say they cannot, then sweety, u need to find a new shop!

That is unacceptable for you to be breaking a nail everyweek. You should only have to come in to get a fill like every 2 weeks (depending on nail growth, which may vary). I dont care how "active" you are on stage, there is no reason for this to be happening. I know girls who play sports and have nails on. Either start back going to your original nail tech, or find a new salon..simple as that!! Hope that helps love.

Maybe you just got them too long? You can always get them a normal length and as your natural nail grows out and you get them filled, they'll get longer and you'll get used to them. Well, that was my problem once when I got mine too long and couldn't handle it... they all broke off. I had gels and took them off since they made me break out (sooo much dirt gets caught under them and transferred to your face). Although it doesn't make THAT much of a difference, using them to run my fingers through the guys hair seemed to get them to buy a couple more dances.

I think it's a balance of finding the length that works for you, and a skilled nail tech. I have had poor jobs that would shatter so easily, and lift from the bottom - shoddy work. I don't keep mine too long, and I've found a good nail tech, and I never have breakage - never ever, and I'm pretty active.

I like the UV acrylics, the kind with the white powder on tips and pink on base. I had acrylics for years, but when I moved down here, I found it extremely difficult to find a good nail tech. They don't have to have licenses or anything, so basically anyone can set up shop and start doing nails. My type of nails is still 'catching on' down here, so not many places even know what they are, or know how to do them. Heh, the tools and techniques are questionable too. I went to one woman once, and she pulled out a Black and Decker cordless screwdriver with the nail-file bit on the end! Uh UHHHH

Anyway, needless to say I wound up ditching the acrylics altogether after a few failed attempts to get decent nails done here. Guess what? It doesn't make any difference in my earnings, and my nails are much healthier now that I'm not getting them ground down every 2 weeks. That grinding they do to prep for acrylics is HORRIBLE for your nails and cuticles!

I've been doing nails in one of my family members shop since I was 14. Shop around. Go to a few salons first and see which one does a better job. Make sure you know the names of the manicurist. Don't feel bad if you personally ask for your manicurist. Regardless the salon will get your business.
If they keep breaking ask the manicurist to either
    1) shorten them
    2) choose a rounded or oval shape nail
    3) ask for a second coat of acrylic (about $5 extra)
Make sure you get fill-ins every two weeks and after that get a whole new full set. Make sure your nails and hands are dry and not too hot or cold. Cause definately the nails will keep breaking off. Hope I helped a lil.

just to go on what everyone else said, the length may be what's causing them to break...everyone has to find the right length and the right nail tech...also, they definitely require maintenace, there's nothing worse than seeing a girl (dancer or not) with half of her nails broken and/or missing...upkeep is a necessity with acrylics and generally i think guys like them...

I totally agree HC. Nothing more tacky than a girl walking around being cute with a broke nail. That SCREAMS "poor maintence" ! I think in this profession, you should be at your best at all times.

I wear acrylic nails and I have found that if they are shorter they don't break as easily. I also have fine hair and nails and I wonder if you have thin nails? Perhaps they are breaking because there isn't much of a base, natural nails, to them. When they start cracking and breaking a lot I usually have them taken off and start over with a fresh set.

In my opinion they shouldn't be breaking like that. You can make a specific appointment with the girl that originally did your nails or just ask for her when you go in for a fill. I like wearing them when I am dancing because they look nice. I am very busy and don't have time to change polish every few days when it chips off of my natural nails. With the acrylics the polish or french manicure stays looking nice. And actually, I break my naturals at work and have the acrylic put on to keep them from breaking. Never broken an acrylic nail at work. You could try another salon. Good luck!

I like wearing my nails very thin, but I noticed that they break so much when they are thin. Some nail techs prefer making them thin so maybe ask them to make it a little thicker and they shouldn't break as easy.

yeah i definitely think that having acrilyic (however u spell it) helps my $$$. it just looks so much sexier and more feminine than short natrual nails. i think it really enhances to the "dreamgirl" fantasy look. i get the pink & whites done. it looks especially sexy when you are tan, i guess the contrast between my light colored french manicured nails against the tanned skin of my body.

bridgette is so right though, the fake's really screw up your real nails so you have to keep getting the fakes or suffer through a couple weeks of crappy looking real nails.

so i say go for the fakes's

I never get a new full set, just fills, and they always look good. I think if you have a good nail tech who uses a quality product, you can do just fills without a problem. I used to go to this one salon where it seemed that the acrylic would break down and start to crack over time, but I never have that problem since switching salons.

i usually just get fills too...this is kinda...i duno....but i hate when i have the fake nails attatched on there too, i like when my nails grow out and all the plastic part are cut off....with the acrylic painted over natural nails.

it hurts more when i catch the fake nails on something rather than if it's my natural nails.

it this post even makes any sense

My nails are about 1 inch long. I have always loved long nails since I was a little girl. I have had overlaid tips on and off for 10 years. I finally bought all my own supplies and do my own, or have a close friend help out. Much cheaper that way and more hygenic. I find tips are better cause they always ask, how do you wipe? to which I reply, the roll and tuck method. You have every right to go and request work with a certain nail technician. I have been to so many, I learned to do it by watching them. If I do not like their work, no tip! Simple as that! I learned not to use my nails as tools. Use other tools or get help. I wear rubber gloves for all of my dirty work. Even pumping gas. It takes time to get used to wearing them. Best to go active length and then let them grow out to glamour length. Another coat probably would be good too. Also, Nail strengthening polish really helps. I some times do my own polish at home, 1 coat per day. I redo them every 2 weeks.
