I had a conversation with my mother (who teaches religion at a catholic school) about gay marriages one time. She told me she didn't mind if gay people got married, as long as they didn't call it the same thing. Like it would somehow tarnish the whole institution of marriage to let gay people do it. If two people love each other and want to commit to spend their lives together, I don't see how it matters if they are gay and don't see how it would be any less valid of a partnership than a traditional marriage.

well as much as I hate to see any poor sucker walk down the isle.... I don't think it is anyones right to decide who someone can or can't love or marry. I think society is hypocritical by saying you shouldn't marry someone outside of your race, sex or religion.

From a value judgement standpoint, I could care less what someone else's personal sexual preferences are, whether or not they choose to indulge those preferences, and whether or not they choose to announce that fact to the world in the way of forming an official bond with a partner. I'm a firm believer in the principle of "harm none, do what you will".

However, there is a HUGE pragmatic consequence of legalizing same sex marriages. This comes in the form of income tax rates for married people vs. single people, retirement/medical benefit costs, social security benefit costs etc. as same sex married partners would now legally be in the same classification as conventional married partners. This increase in costs has not been factored into any of the existing tax and pay rates, and will immediately force financial adjustments in the tax and pay rates of conventional married partners to cover the increased costs - say a 5% increase in income taxes to compensate for all same sex married persons now qualifying for a 25% lower income tax rate, and perhaps a 5% reduction in paychecks to cover the employer's increased costs of providing retirement/medical benefits of same sex spouses. IMHO this is equivalent to "changing the rules after the game has started", and is guaranteed to draw a tremendous backlash from the general public assuming that the general public is told why their taxes went up and their paychecks went down.

i say let em get married. also many big companies including disney (believe it or not) give domestic partner benifits to their employees SO's. if you want to whitewash it for the general public compromise on the term "civil union.

well, one thing to remember with this too, every time a boundary is expanded there is always somebody out there ready to pervert it. Example... Gay rights brought on NAMBLA. So before we endorse anything I truly believe that some thought needs to be put into it.

Um. No. Gay rights have as much to do with NAMBLA as fish have to do with astrophysics. If I believed in "smiting" people instead of writing comments back, that would deserve a smite. The perversion in NAMBLA existed long before the gay rights movement. You just weren't aware of it. Is ignorance bliss?

Yay!! Go on with their baaad selves! Get yourselves married! The way I see it, us hetros are the ones who have twisted the sanctity of marriage- with divorce, open marriages, affairs; etc, there is no way one lifestyle can tell another that THEIRS is the way it was meant to be.
Don't forget, not too long ago, it was illegal to marry outside your RACE!! Not too long before that, you didn't have ANY say in who you married, it was something that was decided by your family without your say, or your feelings taken into account. All those "lawmakers" (personal opinion pushers, actually) felt they were right and just in making the decisions on peoples marriages, as if they were there own private lives they were interferring in. Same story, new era.

If anyone has concerns about the potential undesireable consequences of the Mass SJC ruling, I would direct their attention to the following in the Boston Globe (hardly a bastion of conservatism)

We all imagine ourselves the agents of our destiny, capable of determining our own fate. But have we truly any choice in when we rise, or when we fall, or does a force larger than ourselves bid us our direction. Is it evolution that takes us by the hand, does Science point our way, or is it God who intervenes keeping us safe.

So much struggle for meaning, for purpose. And in the end, we find it only in each other. Our shared experience of the fantastic. And the mundane. The simple human need to find a kindred, to connect. And to know in our hearts... that we are not alone.

Personally, being a libertarian, I really don't see the point of government approving or disapproving of any marriages. Govenment should just keep its nose out of our business as long as we don't harm someone else.

But if forced to make a choice, I'd vote "yes". However, the Hell if I'm going to give that organization my name and email address!

I don't think it really matters what the hell it's called--either marriage or civil union--I think the whole damn thing should be redefined as "life long lovers and friends" since that's what it really should be! I honestly think "marriage" as an institution is a crock--who can honestly promise to feel the same way for the rest of their lives? You can't possibly promise that (think of all of the infinite things that could change that)! But you can promise to be a crucial part to an unwavering web of support for that person. I believe that you don't need a ceremony or a certificate to make someone a part of your family (and by family, I mean that unwavering web of support--those people that are morally/religiously/legally/ethically responsible for your well-being).

My best friend is a lesbian and she's getting "hitched" (as she calls it) to her gf after they graduate and move to Mass. together. I wish them the best of luck. *Big huggies*
