There are some movies that have gone out on a limb and proposed dancers as heroines.

For example, in the movie Independence Day, Will Smith's character's girlfriend/wife is an exotic dancer.

She is the one who shows the most loyalty to her boyfriend/husband by searching for him, as well picking up stray people here and there, and taking care of her child the best that she can. She even saves the president's wife!

I have seen other movies where a character "happened" to be an exotic dancer, but the plot line didn't revolve around "the business."

I saw Blue Iguana and Showgirls. Both of them useless movies that I hate to admit, but I didn't "get" them. I don't know what they were trying to say.

I gave up in disgust after realizing that almost every recent movie made specifically about strippers or strip clubs just HAD to have some psycho killing them.

Granted there are some wierd and scary customers out there, but the impression you'd get from these movies is that stripping would have probably the highest mortality rate of all professions, and that it would be much safer to be a stuntwoman, a parachuting firefighter, or maybe a convoy driver in Iraq.

That said, Fear City was a pretty good movie if a bit older, and had Melonie Griffith, I believe, in the starring role. Tom Berenger is the hero, an ex-boxer with a hot temper, which serves him well against the obligatory lunatic.

Gypsy is pretty cool and funny if you like really old movies. Natalie Wood played Gypsy Rose Lee, and did some classic, if a bit tame, burlesque routines.

Flashdance had it's heart in the right place, but was pure fantasy, with no relation to any stripclub I have ever seen, other than that women danced there. I wasn't crazy about it, but there are worse movies, and come to think of it, at least it DIDN'T have a deranged killer.

Showgirls was one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

G-String Divas was a pretty good show the few times I watched it, but put a bit too glamorous veneer on what can often be a seedy business--but of course I have worked in Daytona, and been disenchanted by the extras-ridden conditions in the other area I am most familiar with. Guys getting BJs in VIP is not remotely glamorous, in spite of what a few of our less-enlightened members might like to believe.

But they weren't really trying to enlighten or educate, but to entertain, so that may be too harsh a judgement. They also had some great music. I missed the episode shot in Lollipops, the biggest Daytona club, or I would have seen several good friends and ex co-workers on TV.

Though hardly a documentary, I would avoid at all costs the Playboy video about stripclubs that came out a couple years ago, it was awful! The announcer sounds as though his previous job was teaching kindergarden, and they castrated him just before shooting it, so he had a little bass left in his voice, but certainly no balls left to speak of...

Goodness, I totally agree with that. I have Dancing at the Blue Iguana and it is the most pointless film about with no storyline. I bought it to see if I could pick up more moves but it's crud. I also saw Showgirls but the funny thing is I actually like it although it is as corny as f*ck!

I *own* Showgirls but it has nothing to do with either stripping or Vegas showgirl dancing. It is cheesy and stupid and I love it for how bad it is. It's all about Kyle MacLachlan and how coked out he seems.

That's true--if you are in the right mood, a really good bad movie can be fun. I will have to check out Showgirls again, lol.

I also sometimes love watching those really cheesy bible or Jesus movies, like we have had for the holiday season.

If you want to see a really bad movie which formed your parents stereotypes there is "Sweet Charity" a 1969 Bob Fosse classic starring Shirley MaClaine.

Helene: There ain't no use flappin' your wings, 'cause we are stuck in the flypaper of life!

I bet you heard those last nite at the SC!

There are also innumerable B movie murder mysteries where the vicitm was a dancer or a dnacer's girlfriend so they could show a little T&A during sweeps month.

I once tried to find a good movie that maybe I could even share w/some family or friends to try to explain "our" lifestyle to them. I searched for a movieing drama or even a lighthearted comedy that could show the true life we lead.
Never found one. I found a lot of adult versions of "after school specials" that would make us all out to be perverts, airheads, or prostitutes but never one that described the way we truely are.
The only way to enjoy any movie put out about exotic dancers or even nightclub life (Roadhouse, Studio 54) is to get a couple of friends together with some wine and a couple of "exotic ciggerettes" and rename the characters of the movie to people you all know. Every movie about the business will have at least one person in it who reminds you of a customer, dancer, dj, or bouncer you know!

I agree "Showgirls" should be included in an hypothetical list of all-time worst films ever made, however, in my personal case, it was my introduction to dancing.

    Weird, isn't it?

I don't like showgirls, striptease was too tediouse for me to sit all the way through, Blu I guana had a shitty story line, and basically depicts all dancers as having no control over their lives, but I still enjoyed it. I loved the dancing/ pole moves. Never seen players club. Want to check out G-String Divas. I don't think there will be much luck in finding a movie that shows life as a dancer as it really is.

I thought Dancing at the Blue Iguana was good. It was horrible and that's why I love it. The storyline doesn't really matter to me that much, the dancing was good in it. I don't know I like the movie. Also btw, the documentary on the DVD was better than the movie.

Apparently Dancing at the Blue Igunana was all improvisation by the actors, hence the jaged stroy line and the long scenes...I really like it the more I see it...the acting is pretty good, and most people in life, especially strippers are messed up. These ladies are just personification of the demons we all possess....I rented the DVD and never watched the features, doh!

I didn't like Dancing at the Blue Iguana either. Every dancer in that movie was either an airhead, a drug addict, or did extras in the lapdance room. Very stereotypical view of dancers.

Striptease was all right, although it focused more on Demi Moore trying to get away from her psycho ex-husband and keep her daughter safe than it did on the actual dancing and strip club scene.

G-String Divas on HBO is probably my favorite stripper program. I've only seen a couple of episodes though. I like programs and movies that focus mainly on the dancing, customers, and what happens in a strip club.

I haven't seen Showgirls or The Players Club. I find it funny that Elizabeth Berkley, the squeaky-clean honor student from Saved by the Bell, plays a stripper in Showgirls. Saved by the Bell, that brings back memories. I used to have the biggest crush on Zack... :

Oh, sorry I forgot my main reason for posting lol. I absolutely LOVE the Player's Club!! That movie came out when I was like 14 I think. It's so good. The ending was when it started getting kinda stupid though. Blondhottie, you should check it out sometime.
